I would say for your 1st whip use what ever is cheap and then spend some money on quailty leather when you get your strand cutting down pat

I think it helps a lot to stop every few inches and take a hard look at what you are doing. that way you can correct errors with out having to go back and redo several feet of work and really look at your work when dropping strands. So I have been using electric tape for balusters in my nylon whips. I am wondering how long the tape will last before it breaks down. I was wondering if any one has used the heavy cloth medical tape.

For what its worth you could buy a whip from Todds and have a decent looking whip for less then you you would have to spend on materials.
