The search for the fedora is the search for the Indy in all of us. I just had to type that, but it's not true in my case; I have no desire to look like Indiana Jones, and besides, with my face, it would be impossible. I even stopped wearing my leather jacket when I got my first brown fedora. I wear ...

Fedora is right, it could be a bit taller. My Bushman crown is about 5 1/4 inches open crown, and the dome starts somewhere around 4 1/8 inches. 3thoubucks obervations and comparison photos of the Fed and Bushman are valuable; the Fed is taller, but a lot of that height is in the dome while the Bush...

Yep, I actually bought a grey Bushman from Hats Direct with no eyelets and it came recently after a few months' wait. The David Morgan version also has no vent eyelets but it does have chinstrap hooks and a thinner ribbon, which I didn't want. The Australian version has the wider traditional grosgra...

I just wear a country hat, usually an Akubra Colly, when I'm hiking. You will all hate me, but I tend to agree with the wife. My fedoras -- even the AB -- look best with my business and casual clothes in the city, but when I'm in the country, it's a natural color, big brim hat with leather band and ...

Cold water is safer than steam. Use a spray bottle and soak the brim and bottom of the crown, including sweat band and ribbon, leaving the top of the crown dry (with gradual wet to dry transition if you can manage it). This is to avoid taper. Then set it upside down and hang a desk lamp over it or s...

Is the bushman on the Hats direct site? i cant seem to find it anywhere. :-k Nope, it's not on their web site, and you have to ask for it by name. That's the amazing thing about HatsDirect, they can get you any Akubra you want direct from the factory, and with little modifications if you need them....

3thoubucks, this is exactly the kind of thing I have been hoping to find. Those detailed dimension specs really help me to know what the bushman hat is like compared to my Feds. I'm happy to see it compares so favorably. I've gone ahead and ordered a bushman from HatsDirect. Theirs don't have the ug...

The Bushman is next on my wish list. It looks like the perfect hat for several different styles. David Morgan's American version has a thin ribbon and that ugly chin strap hook that shows through on the outside, and the Australian version has a nice wider ribbon but vent eyelets in the crown. Ron at...

The problem mostly goes away as your body unconsciously adapts to the challenge of keeping a hat on your head in the wind over the years by tilting it in the direction of the slightest breeze. But I still carry my hat in my hand when walking over a bridge since the wind is often stronger there, and ...

I also love the various Quatermain hats. Art's custom hats are great, and he's making one for me right now. But being pure beaver felt, they do cost more than an off-the-rack rabbit or hare felt hat. Akubra also makes a couple styles that would fit the bill for less investment. I have the Colly whic...

Re: hat
I did say it could be the angle of the photo's. Thats still some good shot coming from a phone. Hats definitely look better when shot from a distance. Shoot too close (ie. arm's length) and you get distortion. It's the same principle that explains why your ears disappear when you stand too close to...

Plus, you have to set the beaver trap so the animal drowns, if you still want that critter to be in the trap when you ran the trap lines. They would gnaw their own legs off if not drowned. Why couldn't you just shave them and let them go? :) When a colleague asked me in suspicious tones how they go...

So THAT'S what Nigerian Brown looks like. Yeah, it's too dark for an Indy hat but come to think of it, exactly what I would want for a non-Indy hat. Too bad (for me) that they don't make the Bushman in that color any more. So the Federation was modeled after the Bushman? I have never owned a Bushman...

Don't send that Fed back! I have three Federations, and all of them were too big. The last one could actually go on my head sideways, and I'm a long oval! I just told Steve my measurements and he confirmed I was a long oval. I asked him to go ahead and make my AB a long oval as well.
