New Akubra Fed arrived today!! Yes, another Newbie.

Post by Indiana Lee »

Hi guys, I have been lurking for sometime...and have only chimmed in once or twice...but my first Akubra Fed arrived today. Love the hat...but the color looks off sitting next to one of my 80's HJ's ... and even the Stetson Indy hat I bought in 1989 looks different in color. So now I have 3 different hats, 3 different colors....and there are things I like about each one...although my HJ may still be my favorite. As far as bashing, how do you get your bashes to stay? The top crown crease seems to keep moving everytime I pick up and put on my hat. I had it deep, with some good camel humps going...but they wont stay put......is this a steam or cold water issue????

I know Tone has said this thing will lighten up....and lose some of this green (olive) tinge..how long does that take??? Everyone I work with was debating the color of the hat....but brown never seemed to be mentioned.

How do I post pics? How do I get my avatar picture to show up? Any help would be great!

Welcome on board Indiana Lee!

To post pics here you need to first upload your image to an online image host such as photobucket or Imageshack I prefer the latter, I find it easier to use and you don't have to register.

Once you upload an pic, it gives you a whole list of different codes that you can paste into your message to display the pic, be it as a clickable thumbnail or as a full sized image. It's pretty easy to use once you get your head around the idea, I can do it so it ain't that hard!

The Raiders hat may have a bit of green in it, maybe not. viewtopic.php?t=17766 This is a good excuse to pour a bucket of dusty dirt on it, which should turn it browner, or spray it with a bleach soultion. .... I've hot glued the front and back corners of my top crease into place.

Thanks for the tips!! It's amazing how different the Akubra is from the HJ....I thought they would be very similiar. I will try to post some shots as soon as I can shoot some. So I'm guessing an AB has a totally different color from these hats as well.

Congrats on the Fed, my friend. I had the same trouble with the crown holding it's shape at first. No need to glue it. I used some water, and playing with it a while will help, too. I steamed the #### out of my brim, and it still has plenty of stiffener. Personally, though, I recommend water. The best thing that ever happened to my Fed was getting caught in a rain storm! It helps the color, too. It won't take long for the color to change with regular use. One day you'll just realize - hey! It's a different color! Leave it out of the box for a couple of weeks, too, so light gets at it. (that's just a theory, though).

The cold water idea should be fine. Not keen on getting glue near the hat.

The 405 freeway! It ***** as much as it ever did if you have to drive on it.

My Avatar is me....drawn by one of my artists at the studio....she is awesome!

I can imagine the best thing for the Akubra Fed would be lots of sun and weather....to add some character to it. If it gets half the character my Stetson and HJ have ....it will be a good start.

Hey Tone....is that the Fed you bleached? The ribbon does look pretty dark in that shot. How long you had that particular hat?

Hey Tone, did you take off and over tighten the ribbon on that hat? Also, is there a thread on how to bleach your hat tutorial.....cause I wonder with bleach if you could really mess up the hat. Also, do you think that in time, if you dont bleach, the hat will lighten as nicely....just curious.

Either this is not the Akubra you just received or Los Angeles is having some pretty strange summer weather... :)

Great hat though.

Whoops....sorry the picture is so huge.....got to get the size thing down....

You are right, LA is having really weird weather to match the people who live here.... :P This picture was shot back in March of this year. Yes, March.

This is actually my STETSON , got it back in 1989. Have folded the ribbon in this shot....ribbon has since been replaced. No pics of the Akubra yet..will get some up soon.

Welcome to the madness...

You came for the Gear, but you'll stay for the people. The obvious question is: are you into other vintage things? Are you cool about that era, or is it just about Jones?

Thanks again guys!! You can't see it in this shot, but the bash worked quite well on this hat. With the new ribbon I put on, it looks really good for a Stetson. The color was a much darker brown when the hat was new...

Part of it must be how old it is with all the wear it's had. 17 yrs will do the "INDY" thing on it's own....providing the hat survives.

I would say I'm one who is into the period, as well as the films. I think men knew how to dress in the 40's....something I wish would come back. And yes, I've been a part of the "madness" for longer than 17 years....just didn't know where the rest of the "mad" crowd was.....but it looks like we have a lot of GEAR HEADS out there!

Thanks for shrinking the photo down...I will get that sorted out. At least my daughter likes my hats!

Yes, but I think the brim is too short on hers.

So that's what your Stetson looks like, what about the brand new Akubra that this thread is about?
