In 1938, the tangent sight version of the Hi-Power was the only one that was commonly available. It is plausible that Indy won it from a Belgian officer while playing poker, but it would've been a tangent sight model.

Re: Fair market price for S&W HE2 .455?
A lot of the guns that came over in .455 Webley (.455 Eley) were converted to .45 ACP by shaving the back side of the cylinder down. That way you could use half moon or full moon clips, or use .45 Auto Rim cartridges. Since these guns have been previously modified, they have less collector's value. ...

I'm with Chris on this one. I've shot thousands of rounds of corrosive military surplus ammunition. As long as you clean the guns thoroughly afterwards, you'll be fine. Before Ballistol, we used hot soapy water. The hot water opened the pores of the metal and the corrosive salts could get out. Follo...

Re: GUN IDENTIFIED!!! - ToD car chase
I have no dog in this fight, but I can provide some potentially useful information. The designation "M1917" was used by both Colt and Smith and Wesson to identify guns made for use by the armed forces during WWI. There weren't enough M1911's in stock to arm all the troops going in, so the ...

If you have an original U.S. M1917 that's in good shape, I'd leave it as is. With the upcoming 100th anniversary of WWI, there's getting harder to find and more expensive. I did a Stembridge conversion on a Brazillian Navy M1917. Any comptent gunsmith can cut the barrel and recrown it for you. The m...

Actually, it's the other way round. The Smith and Wesson 2nd Model Hand Ejector and the Colt New Service were both commercially avialable revovlers in .45 Long Colt. Not a lawyer; sorry. I'm a retired Marine Corps Criminal Investigator! .455 Webleys stayed in service until the Korean War, so ammo would've been available all over the British Empire. Both the M1917 Colt and the M1917 Smith and Wesson were made for the U.S. Military as a stop gap measure to provide troops with handguns, as there were not enought M1911's in inventory during WWI. As such, both were chambered in .45 ACP, and utilized half moon clips to give the ejector stars a way t...

One interesting note: he's supposedly carrying a Webley Fosberry revolver. The Webley Fosberry was a rare variant; a semi-auto revolver. The frame is a two-piece design. On recoil, cuts in the cylinder cause it to rotate, and the hammer is cocked automatically. You don't see them very often, and the...

If I recall correctly, the barrel on the HE is screwed in, rather than pinned. If this is the case, another thing you can do is put the barrel in a padded vice, and turn it slightly. This method is used by Cowboy shooters to "adjust their sights" on Colt and Colt clone (SAA) revolvers. R/S...
