Re: Book on Hat Making
That book is mostly millinery techniques, hatters use a little different process.

They wanted him to have a 1911 backup, but used a hi power because the 9mm blanks were more reliable and it looked close enough. So how about a double stack 1911?

Re: Why a 4" barrel?
Y’all are thinking too recent. After WWI it was common to take 1917/HE2’s and cut them down, through on a sight of some sort, and resell them. Thus the different sights, different people doing conversions. It was also not uncommon to fill the lanyard hole will lead and paint the frame. This was done...

Indy’s shirt
I only have one shirt from one maker. I have a couple questions about some specific details of the shirt, mostly pertaining to “is this how the ones used in the film were made?” And “is this how all replicas are currently made?” I ask about these things because men’s clothing in the first half of th...

Ok, do y’all really want to know how to get a true Raiders look with out resorting to all this minutiae? Buy a hat. Wear the @#$% out of it. Wear it in the rain, Wear it wet, sweat in it. After a year or so, get it reblocked by someone that knows a couple of key factors. There you have it, the perfe...

To those that were wronged by me, all I can say is I’m sorry. With out going into it too much I will say be careful who you let into your life, and especially who you marry, as it will effect everything else. After a divorce, some therapy, and just some time, I am back to making hats and doing it fu...

A hood is the step before a capeline. when the body is still in a roughly conical shape. A capeline has been flared with a blocking machine and is therefore much easier to make a mens hat with. milliners use hoods for some hats like cloches, where there is no brim, or styles with small brims the hav...

Depends on the hat. A beaver hat? No. A rabbit hat? in theory yes. Depends on the hat. It takes a good deal of work, along with a new sweat, and most likely new liner. If it is something that has sentimental value it may be worth it. If not, have a hatmaker make a copy and sell the original. I do st...

Last time I was at the stetson/resistol factory store there were several Stetson Pinnacles (the beaver version of the temple). Actually, there are a few reasons and they have nothing to do with Lucas film. First, I live in the country, 6 miles to the nearest small town and a half hour drive to the nearest town with reliable Internet service. So rather than having people send me online orders that I never got, I would rather...

One of the best hat stiffners is widely availablein small amount and is fairly cheap. The problem is the use of it. It takes practice. I worked with it on old-beatup hats before using it. I would have probably ruined about 8 hats if I had tried to just use it on a new hat. I takes knnowledge only ga...

The south american felt comes from Cury, a supposed supplier to herbert Johnson in the early 80s. The U.S. felt comes from winchester, where at least 90% of custom hatters in the U.S. get their felt. THe Winchester felt is a standard dress weight body, approx. 4.5 oz. The Cury felt is heavier, becau...

I did an interview in march and they finally ran the story. I have to say somthing about one of the quotes which was taken out of context. About being the person to come to when other hatters can't or won't make something, I don't say that because I feel I am better than others. I say it because Oth...

Yes, jones sr's hat could be either an irish or english walker. a trilby is a type of fedora. originally worn by the englich to the country races. usually brown, 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch brim, raw edge, approx 1 inch ribbon, and generally worn about a half to one size small, so it sits higher on the head...

First let me say that if you have a hat on order, or being worked on, with me it will be completed with in the next week. That being said, this means I will be all caught up and will have a short wait time. So, I have brown rabbit felt in stock (and a few bodies in other colors) and will be able to ...
