thanks for your input. I've found a hat shop near me which sells foam stripping with sticky backing. I'm going to try them before I buy incase they don't fit. Typically a thin layer of open cell foam behind the hatband is used to bring the hat down to a more snug fit. It is similar to what is sold as weatherstripping. You may be able to find something like this at a local hardware or home improvement store. Just use the thinnest foam available.

Guys... you don't have to drill out the rivet. You are over thinking it. Just use a pair of wire cutter pliers and snip it off. It's not difficult. Use rubbing alcohol instead of water, and liquid shoe polish - the kind that applies with a sponge tipped plastic bottle. I use the cheap Kiwi brand in black and brown. Works really well.
