Re: New Old YIJ hat

I love it! I'd love to an Indy hat with a 3" brim to turn into a Raiders hat. Most offerings to my mind just don't have enough brim width -fine for the look of the other movies, but not Raiders. Does anyone offer a 3" brim these days outside of a custom made hat?

I agree - a naturally aged natural tan roohide has a particluarly nice quality! Here's a 10 ft I made a while ago. Hasn't had much use, but it's probably 8 years old by now. https://i.ibb.co/87ZyQLN/Photo-05-04-23-17-51-04.jpg https://i.ibb.co/CzbJQfK/Photo-05-04-23-17-50-59.jpg https://i.ibb.co/SN8...

Blast from the past! Noel Howerd's TOD jacket

I just rediscovered these pics from when I went to MBA costumes in London to buy my first ever Indy bag. Noel Howerd and his staff were very courteous and once my bag was ready they asked whether I would like to see some of their screen used gear. I seem to remember a pair of trousers and some boots...

Great looking hat! Interesting that you describe it as stiff - I wonder whether that has anything to do with Thomas' bashing process. I ordered mine open crown and it's very soft and flexible - not quite floppy, but also not far off.

New Hat Day! Advintage Harrison

So after wearing my old Steele and Jones hat on many adventures, I decided it was time to get a new hat. Of course, in terms of Cosplay, there's nothing wrong with wanting something that just looks the part hanging off a belt. That's just a different requirement- and in that case, paying for a quality whip would be a waste of money and good leather.

I've always felt that for a good Raiders look the brim should be fairly flat. There's footage of the stuntguys prepping for the flying wing fight and the Hero hat can be seen sitting on the wing and the brim is as flat as a pancake. That's not a plaiting mistake, it's the change in pattern from checkerboard to herringbone - normally covered by the transition knot (which is in fact the only purpose of that knot) - here it's partially visible. Not a mistake and not a defect.

Re: LOOKING INTO A NEW WHIP

Is it me or does the handle get thicker towards the butt? I'm used to reverse taper on a hat, but not on a whip. I'm wondering what would create that effect. Normally a whip might thicken towards the transition due to how the the bolsters are placed. Not sure why it would thicken towards the butt.

The other difference to my approach is that I always attached the lead tape to the nail before the first belly, rather than adding it at the end. To my mind it gave me a more secure butt foundation. I know that Winrich added it later, like this whipmaker. Was never quite sure when Morgan did it. Ult...

Using kangaroo for the bolsters is a waste. The whole point of using roo for braiding is that it can take more stretch and be braided tighter than cow or calf. The bolsters are simply layers wrapped around the braided bellies for which calf is more than adequate. Pretty sure not only Morgan in his d...

Congrats on the whips - both awesome whipmakers! Having said that, I'm a bit taken aback by the heel knot on Paul's whip - I know he's going for an 80s Morgan style, but that just looks unattractive to me. Maybe it's an unflattering photo - his whips usually look (and are) great.
