This Week's Whip - May 2

Post by Joshp53 »

I make this type sometimes. It's an eight foot calf skin. I call these type "Calf Skindiana Jones" bullwhips. I love the properties and color of these veg tanned calf skins. Once conditioned, the strands cut from the skins are surprisingly strong. I was really leaning into the strands as I plaited, even when the strands I cut were down to 4mm wide!

Very nice work! Calf is indeed very good - as you say, when properly fed! I once had a very similar whip from Bernardo.

It's 2-3 oz like roo and kip, so at first touch it's very similar. Something about it takes a little getting used to when cutting and pairing, though. It seems "lighter" somehow when the blade slides through it. And if you stretch it dry, it's liable to break easy...but once it's conditioned, it's pretty darn strong.

Thanks!

I like kip and calf whips. If the leather is good, you can braid fine strands into something beautiful.

Good job!
