I don't suppose anyone scientifically knows exactly why a hand-braided whip will have a natural coil direction even before it has ever been "forced" into a coil, but there are theories. I'm sure there are other theories as well, but these are the top three I could come up with off the top...

See that's why I never spoke the word "Plait" to a whipmaker, because I was too nervous I would mis-pronounce it, and sound like an idiot. I would write it "plait" only. So I always said "braid" a whip, when talking about it...... LOL!

Were you looking for strictly an "IJ" replica? If that's the case, I can't offer much. But I will say that whatever "style" of whip you decide on, Strain's whips are very, very good, for all the reasons mentioned before.

Just tossing in here. I bought a Wilsons Leather Adventure Bound cowhide bomber in 1991 for $250. It has a zip-out Thinsulate lining. I didn't buy it for an IJ jacket, I just thought it looked cool, even though it would pass for an IJ jacket at a costume party... I have worn the b-jesus out of this...
