quick pronunciation question
For all of you whipmakers and whip enthusiasts out there, is the word "plait" pronounced "PLATT" like bat, or hat, or is it pronounced "PLATE", like date or rate? I would like to order a whip in the near future without sounding like a dummy

Re: quick pronunciation question
I have heard a whip maker or two pronounce it "platt" but it is pronounced "plate." Plait is not a whipmaking term, its a braiding term. Plaiting can be used to refer to a braid in one's hair. It is indeed pronounced "plate."

Re: quick pronunciation question
According to Merriam-Webster Online, it's pronounced either way (they even have audio) so it's a matter of choice.

Re: quick pronunciation question
Really? I didn't know that. I guess either is correct then. I'm still using "plate," though.

Re: quick pronunciation question
I didn't either! I had heard it pronounced both ways, so upon this thread, I decided to look it up. Who knew!

Re: quick pronunciation question
Thanks guys, that makes me feel alot better. I had always pronounced it "plate" in my head, but never really thought about it until I watched a video of an Aussie Lady making a whip and she said "platt". Of course, it could've just been a regional dialect thing (after taking a linguistics course, you start to notice these things)

Re: quick pronunciation question
The English (British) pronunciation would be platt, as in a girl had platts in there hair, plates in her hair would be something entirely different. .
Of course this is southern Britain. In the north all bets are off.

Re: quick pronunciation question
It's "platt" down here in New Zealand... just as Kt pointed out. My girls wear "platts" not "plates" in their hair!

Re: quick pronunciation question
Going with the Aussies on this one, so yeah, platt for me.
Re: quick pronunciation question
I first learned the basics of plaiting from the video of Gayle Nemeth (http://www.aussiewhipmaker.com) and she, and therefore I, pronounce it "platt". In fact, I still hear her voice in my head every time I start plaiting...

Re: quick pronunciation question
The British and Australians tend to pronounce it as Plait [Platt] North Americans usually pronounce it as Plait [Plate] both pronunciations are correct.
Re: quick pronunciation question
I used to say Plate, I think Ron Edwards says that's how it's said in his book (I could be wrong)...but then after hearing both Joe Strain and David Morgan say Platt I quickly switched. I don't know if switching how I say it improved my whips at all.

LOL...sure it did!
BTW Ron Edwards says "Platt" too.
If ya ask me A "plate" is something you eat off of, and to "plate" something it must be metal.

Re: quick pronunciation question
See that's why I never spoke the word "Plait" to a whipmaker, because I was too nervous I would mis-pronounce it, and sound like an idiot. I would write it "plait" only. So I always said "braid" a whip, when talking about it...... LOL!
Re: quick pronunciation question
Universally "Platt" here in Australia. Princess Leia had plates so that must be a good thing.
