So glad to see Lucasfilm circle back to HJ to make the poet for the final Indy film.

Re: Can a Raiders fedora look just like a Crusade fedora?
The ribbons are technically slightly different but it doesn't really matter. The major question is, why would you order a Raiders and have them give it an LC bash? The dimensions are different, especially in the brim. Yes I want the dimensions to be exactly like Raiders, but the bash to look like L...

Re: 7UP Indiana Jones Fedora
I still have my cheap 1980s Indy hat made by Stetson. It doesn't have the nice looking liner and sweatband, but it does have a cool TOD label inside of it. They made a grey one at the time, too, and I had one until I lost it crossing a precarious bridge in the NC mountains. This 7Up hat is a nice f...

Re: Herbert Johnson Temple of Doom
It's been talked about ad nauseum, but I believe it's generally accepted that TOD and LC weren't exactly the same blocks. The LC block was built off the TOD block but appears to give more volume to the crown. It's definitely higher in a lot of scenes in LC, especially the second half of the movie, ...

Re: Herbert Johnson Temple of Doom
When people talk about the plane hat in particular I see a lot of hate. I honestly prefer this hat to the others in the movie. Im only just learning about this stuff, but as a casual observer, this hat stands out to me the way the SOC or even Young Indy’s backwards hat does. I would buy one if some...

Re: Herbert Johnson Temple of Doom
I'm watching this right now, and essentially the entire plane interior, from the moment Indy gets into the cockpit, to when they leap out of the plane, it's the short stubby Stetson. It certainly doesn't look like anything HJ produced for any of the movies. And really, when they show Indy lay back ...

Late to the party on this, but I'll definitely chime in anyway. :) If you're a prop collector, and not necessarily a "cosplayer" - the fact the Cairo hat is so beat up, it makes for a visually interesting collectors piece - with lots of character and detail. It's much like the Tantive IV V...

Re: Idol-grab fedora--distressed?
Just for info, Raiders was not filmed in sequence that the final cut/movie is shown. Filming started in LaRochelle France, Tunisia, then Hawaii (Peru scenes), and pick ups in the states ( Pan Am clipper). Harrison, stand ins, and stuntmen all used different fedoras for different shots and different...

Re: HJ “Sable” vs. “Deep Sable” — What’s the consensus?
Well what you're seeing is mainly a product of lighting, color timing, telecine, and, today, digital intermediates, etc. The Raiders hat was not "deep sable." I'd bet money on it. But it was also not the regular sable HJ offers -- it's too light and that's obvious, IMO. To me the closest ...

Re: Is Herbert Johnson the holy grail of indy fedoras now?
Maybe this is an inconsequential phrasing quibble; but, in re-reading the thread, I picked up on 'reverse engineering' with regards to the block, and, well I wouldn't phrase it that way. It's not as if someone had to hand carve a new block based on the hat. Assuming what HJ is saying is true with r...

Re: Is Herbert Johnson the holy grail of indy fedoras now?
After handling a bunch of hats from numerous makers, including HJ, I feel like in terms of Raiders, they are not the holy grail, I mean look at their SOC alone and compare that to the likes of FedoraRaiders and Advintage. Re: Is Herbert Johnson the holy grail of indy fedoras now?
I would love it if HJ had a matching set of blocks from their original Poet hat maker. That would be outstanding - and they used those to create their new graduated block set. But I'm not overly worried about it, as their hats definitely pass the eye-test, and look the part. I know everyone seems lo...

Re: Is Herbert Johnson the holy grail of indy fedoras now?
I look at a holy grail as a top of the line accuracy piece, whether it’s with lineage back to the original piece, created from the original maker, or of extreme rarity, or any combination there of. For me, and I can only speak for me, the HJ has… A block that “allegedly” matches the original through...

Re: Is Herbert Johnson the holy grail of indy fedoras now?
The poets were made to HJ’s specs. RS made adjustments to the hats. Were the hats 100% bespoke? No. But Spielberg and Ford chose the HJ hats over other hatters for a reason, vs choosing another London hatter’s poet. That’s distinction is still very much on HJ. …and until the original blocks from the...

Love your hat and Indy gear. Nice work. Chris (Mac) and his Quasimodo V2 helmets are certainly very good. He definitely has the general look and feel of Vader. I think it’s cool LFL went to Mac and Bookface (Paul), and used the Quasi as their base for the Rogue One Vader. They do beautiful work. I d...

S’pose it depends what scene you’re viewing. The hats were so weathered through the movie, and depending on the lighting, the color of the changes. It looks more like deep sable in portions of the idol cave, looked lighter when Indy was at the Idol display. Raven’s Bar - the color cast of the lighti...
