For all of you whipmakers and whip enthusiasts out there, is the word "plait" pronounced "PLATT" like bat, or hat, or is it pronounced "PLATE", like date or rate? I would like to order a whip in the near future without sounding like a dummy
I have heard a whip maker or two pronounce it "platt" but it is pronounced "plate." Plait is not a whipmaking term, its a braiding term. Plaiting can be used to refer to a braid in one's hair. It is indeed pronounced "plate."
Thanks guys, that makes me feel alot better. I had always pronounced it "plate" in my head, but never really thought about it until I watched a video of an Aussie Lady making a whip and she said "platt". Of course, it could've just been a regional dialect thing (after taking a linguistics course, you start to notice these things)
I first learned the basics of plaiting from the video of Gayle Nemeth (http://www.aussiewhipmaker.com) and she, and therefore I, pronounce it "platt". In fact, I still hear her voice in my head every time I start plaiting...
The British and Australians tend to pronounce it as Plait [Platt] North Americans usually pronounce it as Plait [Plate] both pronunciations are correct.
I used to say Plate, I think Ron Edwards says that's how it's said in his book (I could be wrong)...but then after hearing both Joe Strain and David Morgan say Platt I quickly switched. I don't know if switching how I say it improved my whips at all.
"I don't know if switching how I say it improved my whips at all."
LOL...sure it did!
BTW Ron Edwards says "Platt" too.
If ya ask me A "plate" is something you eat off of, and to "plate" something it must be metal.
Ron
See that's why I never spoke the word "Plait" to a whipmaker, because I was too nervous I would mis-pronounce it, and sound like an idiot. I would write it "plait" only. So I always said "braid" a whip, when talking about it...... LOL!
