TOD Knife
I was watching TOD tonight and I noticed this knife pop-up on screen. Its in the scene where Indy gets whipped. As the thuggee grabs his whip from the pile of Indy's gear up comes this knife. It seems to be a knife in Indy's possession,(or Short Rounds?) as it was wrapped up in Indy's gun belt. What do you think? It seems to be on a leather string?

Re: TOD Knife
Ya I have noticed that before, but never really gave it any thought, seeing how it is never seen again. I just assumed it was something Shorty had on him that the Thugee guards took away from him.

Re: TOD Knife
For some reason I always thought Short Round had a little knife. However, I don't know where that conclusion came from. Perhaps it was written in the novelization or script?

Yes, in the novelization Shorty had a little knife.Browncoat wrote:For some reason I always thought Short Round had a little knife. However, I don't know where that conclusion came from. Perhaps it was written in the novelization or script?
But it's strange that this knife appear only in this scene...maybe this shots was the first to have shooted and then they've decided to eliminate Shorty's weapon from the storyline.
Re: TOD Knife
The knife also shows up in the spike chamber.

On Short Round or Indy? Need to look that scene over
Edit:
Ok its SR knife. Spike room - When Indy tells Willy its a along story you see him hand SR a knife as he was using it to jimmy the spike room mechanism. Mods you can move this over to the other character section if you want. Gotta love DVD
Re: TOD Knife
That is what I love about COW- I've seen ToD at LEAST 70 times and yet I didn't know that Shorty's knife was seen anywhere except the whipping scene...until NOW BTW, you can also see it when they first enter the room (Shorty has it in his hand) and after Willie pulls the fulcrum release lever- on Shorty's belt when he is kneeling downIdahoJones wrote:indy89 wrote:The knife also shows up in the spike chamber.

Re: TOD Knife
Actually I find it very cool to look at those grabs and see stuff you haven't never noticed before... Wow!
Re: TOD Knife
Forgive me for being off topic, but I couldn't resist... freeze frame when Indy reaches under the closing "door" to get his hat after he pushes Willie and Short Round out. You might have to play it a couple of times, but you will be glad you did.Indiana Holt wrote:what else? hmm.....

Brand?
Model?
Where you found them?
Saying you have them with no information is unhelpful in a forum where we pride ourselves on sharing for the good of the community.

Thanks, Jeff. I’ve only been part of this forum for 15 years or so…
I was at a train crossing and didn’t have unlimited time to go back and find all the information at the time. But I figured I’d at least let him know that someone has, in fact, found it. NOW I will go and find the information needed.

Re: TOD Knife
So... What are the deets???
Re: TOD Knife
So Shorty’s knife is called a Shibriya.
Unlike the curved, ornate daggers of Yemen and Oman, the shibriya is a straight, workmanlike blade made for the rough-and-tumble of daily Bedouin life. Not a decoration but a tool, it is designed to be easily drawn, to cut through canvas and rope, to shear sheep – and to kill.

Re: TOD Knife
Seems to me that in the pic the knife has a simple straight crossguard and bulbous pommel.
Most Shibriya look different, but I did see one on Etsy that is really close (even has a wooden handle):

Saw this on Reddit... Aside from a fun pic, there's another look at the knife:

Re: TOD Knife
Kyle, thanks for the name. If you want to read the article Kyle quoted, it's an interesting read.
https://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle- ... nt-daggers
But like bearbeast I wasn't able to find any images of shibriya knives that match what we see on screen.
Which got me thinking (always a dangerous proposition), they filmed in Sri Lanka so maybe they found a knife locally that the prop department liked the looks of. But again, searching for "Sri Lankan dagger/knife" didn't produce any results.
So I thought, "Well, despite them never stepping foot in India the movie is set there so maybe..."
And that's where I hit pay dirt.

You might have success using "India carving set" to get something similar in shape and get a fork to go with!
There are a number of similar knives listed on etsy and ebay for pretty reasonable prices. I pulled this image from a current live ebay listing selling for $24.99 with free shipping.
Conversely, this one is listed on ebay for $125.00 so it definitely pays to shop around.

Well, that is definitely the right one! Good detective work, Indiana Jeff.
I like the look of the brass cross guard and wooden handle.

Re: TOD Knife
Bear, I think the knife you found on etsy is mislabeled as a shibriya. It is consistent with the knives I found and even has "India" stamped on the blade. Ironic that you would find the right knife in a round about fashion.

Well, it WAS the only one of its kind to turn up in my search and only found it by looking at pics, but it is ironic for sure...

Another data point, the Collector's Weekly link that I included had comments. One of which is,

So there's nothing "ancient" (depending on how your feelings about something ~70 years old being ancient ) or particularly special about these knives. These knives are tourist souvenirs made in India during the 1950s & 1960s. They can sometimes be found with double-ended sheaths having a knife & fork at opposite ends and intended as carving sets. The names are limited only the imagination of the seller and the gullibility of the buyer.

Re: TOD Knife
Correction: after reading about the Shibriya knife I posted before I realize that it’s bigger than the knives I have. The ones I have are like the one Jeff posted. My mistake. I got them a few years back and only based my findings in photos alone.

Thanks, Canyon.
If you zoom in you can see a “ball” on the side of the cross-guard that I’m convinced is the hole used for the lock pin on the wooden sheath.

Indiana Jeff
