riothamus, My first pair of 405s were too big - exactly as you described. I always thought they were too long, but talked myself out of returning them because 1. I waited so long to get them (both in terms of after seeing Raiders in '81 and also after ordering them from the SF store 20 years later) ...

I've always been fond of the 'red' version of the 405's myself. You can keep the color with application of Melatonian 'Brick' shoe creme, if you're not already using it. FYI, ebay has a pair of 405s the owner resoled with commando soles in size 12. Description says they're brand new and worn only five times. Thought I'd let you know.

The only issue you might have is the lack of traction with them. They have no tread what-so-ever. In wet, slippery conditions, you'll be spending more time laying in the mud then walking thru it. I wouldn't recommend it. If you're doing farmwork, get a good pair of Timberlands, Red Wings, etc... Al...

I can't speak for wearing them on a farm but I can tell you that they are rock solid footwear. I have a pair of 405s and 403s and I wear both of them a LOT! Mr. Garrison just e-mailed me yesterday to inform me that my standard Raiders (rabbit) should be in the mail by the end of this week. I can't wait as this will be my first Indy fedora ever.
