Re: Question about the Fed IV

Hello everyone! I'm newer to Club Obi Wan (been reading for a while, never posted before) but had a question that I thought someone here would be able to answer. I'm going to be traveling in Europe this summer, and I want to wear an Indy style Fedora. Since I'll be traversing much of the same area ...

You can always buy a plastic block

http://www.hatshapers.com

Or just wear it as is. Remember these hats are not the greatest quality so if you wear it in the rain/snow you may want to use Scotchguard on it first to help protect it from shrinking.

Yeah, I was wondering what dimensions you are using for the brim? To my eye the brim doesn't look like a dimensional cut so I made this one 2 3/4" all around to compliment the hat size[emoji1360] Sent from my SM-S102DL using Tapatalk I can imagine some of us old timers will be happy about that...

I found 'em!!!! \:D/ So, this was the my last remaining Fed III, one day out of the box, with a shallow preliminary bash. Re: Any Pics of Fed IV vs Herbert Johnson Color?

Interesting topic. I wonder how the hats have changed over the years. My first Federation from 2001 had distinct green undertones. Then my Federation deluxe from 2005 had distinct red undertones. So your saying the modern Federation hats have grey undertones now? I was thinking of treating myself to...

I second scotchgard. Makes it water resistant. So outside a massive downpour it should be fine.
Wear it in good health and enjoy your trip.

For myself I don’t baby my hats but I don’t thrash them either. But I would say, wear your hat every day rain or shine for two years and it will be nicely broken in. Soft, flexible and fitted perfectly to your head.

Then there are people like me with an off center LO head shape. That means I always get a great looking “swoop” to the brims of all my hats. Whether I like it or not. Enjoy and embrace the option if you have it.

I have several rabbit and beaver hats. If it was me looking for a hat to last a lifetime, I would go for beaver. I have an Adventurebilt and several Art Fawcett creations and none of them have shrunk. Not the hat, the sweatband though is another story. Invest in a hat stretcher/forum to keep the hat...

Fedora Chin Strap?

My Akubra's usually take about two years of daily wear to shrink enough to stay on my head in a stiff wind. If you get your hat custom fitted it shouldn't be an issue as well. Fortunately for myself Steve at Adventurebilt had 7 3/8 LO blocks. Back in the day Hatsdirect gave out free chin straps with...

Re: Ordered Moonstone Fed IV: KotCS Train or ROLA Plane?

Thanks to Clipper I am now convinced the ROLA Plane hat has to be Carbon grey. So by default a moonstone grey Federation has to be a KotCS Train hat. Outside of that the Federation is based off of the KotCS hat anyway so it seems only logical. Besides you can evolve your hat just by manhandling it t...

Continuing this discussion as to price point, I was wondering if most of you wear or do not wear your hats based upon the price of the hat? For example, do most of you not wear your very expensive hats? Do you wear the least expensive more because it's cheaper and you would rather ruin that one ins...

I have a Federation and an Adventurebilt. If money is not an issue I would go with the Adventurebilt without thinking twice. Next to that I would personally buy a Penman, or a Herbert Johnson. Re: Floppiest raiders hat?

Floppiest fedora hat I ever had was a Federation II. Three years of daily wear and serious thrashing. Added stiffener at one point in time and it beaded up on the felt, so I ended up taking my Swiss Army Knife and pounced the entire hat. The brim would either flip up or smack me in the face with a s...

Interesting question. The reality of the situation is I am not Harrison Ford. I have a similar height but, not only do I have a larger chest but stomach as well. Why do we have sweatbands? To stop/slow sweat from soaking threw the felt of your hat and discolouring it. Possibly shrinking your hat as well. Also to add comfort to your head, Rougher felts may be uncomfortable. With that said I have seen some vintage hats that people have taken the sweat band out...

Play with it. Roll the brim like you would roll a piece of paper. If you watch old westerns you see the cowboys twisting and pinching the hats. I fact if you watch the Indiana Jones extra features on DVD you will see Ford doing the same thing between takes. :TOH:
