Re: Modern S&W M22 1917 ???
You'll also find that they build these on the N-frame round butt. For whatever reason, when Smith was owned by an overseas company back in the late 80's/early 90's, all the dies and machinery to make square butt N-frames were ordered destroyed. ](*,) So, these are as close to the originals as we're...

Re: M1911
I've boiled 1911's in water. Scrubbed them afterwards with a toothbrush and Palmolive soap. Then rinsed them in boiling water. Used a blow dryer and towels to get rid of all the water. Then rubbed everything down with 5w 30 motor oil. Toweled off the excess oil before reassembly. 1911's are just too...

Detail stripping a 1911 and using soap and water is seldom talked about and works fine.

Re: M1911
One thing I've always thought is Indy is practical and pragmatic. To him a handgun is a tool of self-protection and military surplus is cheap and plentiful.

You have two choices, both are 230 grain. FMJ or RNL.

Re: Who actually shoots their 1917 revolver?
I too have the Thunder Ranch. I tried the stock magnas, then I added the Tyler, Meh...Then I got a pair N-frame target grips...bingo! As far as ammo, keep it simple. Any standard 230 grain load will do about the same. I handload, so I've found my sweet spot. Instead of 230 grain FMJ I use 230 round ...

Re: Who actually shoots their 1917 revolver?
I would like to say that your ammo should be .45 ACP 230 grain FMJ loaded to normal speed of 830-850 f.p.s.. POI should be POA 10 yards in.

I have the Thunder Ranch Model 22. It came with the Thunder Ranch magna grips. Initially, I used the magnas, I found them unsatisfactory. Then I added a Tyler T-grip, better, but still not right. Next, I put on Pachmayr, better still, but just not what I was looking for. I reached Nirvana with a pai...

Indy doesn't live in a vacuum. It would be safe to assume that he loses his handguns as often as his hat falls off. Anything surplus would fit the bill. (As long as it fit his holster. ) I just don't see him buying new. If there is another film, post 1957, we might see a 1911 or 1911A1 make i...

Considering the 1917 was NEVER created to be a 'comfortable' shooting gun in the first place, the .45 ACP IS a punishing round in those old Smiths. The trigger guard tends to beat the knuckles pretty hard, even when you're expecting it. Considering it was built to be used in a battlefield situation...

but I wouldn't object to FMJ in the revolvers. I would. It plays 'hob' on the rifling of a revolver. Semi-auto's have/had harder barrels. Regards! Michaelson 'splain Lucy. I know (and knew) several combat pilots in my life who served in WW1... Fascinating. Not too many WWI vets left by the time I came round. The Internet, for better or worse, is a source of much information. If that information is accurate, factual, speculation, confabulation or just plain old BS is anybody's guess. The 10 mm falls squarely into the Urban Legend/Best thing since sliced bread category. Since owning the Glock 20 (which in...

New Tech
If we took all of the Indy gear and extrapolated it to today, what do you think it would be? For example, what would be a modern replacement for the Aldens? The revolver, the leather jacket, the bullwhip, etc.?

You have a lot of choices. You could get a Springfield, either a Mil-Spec or a GI. You could get a Rock Island Armory GI or a High Standard GI. If you shop around you can get those new in the $450 -$550 range. (Or less) What I plan on doing next, is getting a funky old Colt Sistema and rebuilding it...

I suppose that that is the rub. The whole point of the Sally Rand, bare bones 1911-A1 was it's ability to function well under adverse conditions. The tolerances being such that grit, sand and dust would be ingested, disgested and ejected, while still putting out that big 230 grain hardball. The Gloc...

Model 36 for our back-up and a 1911 in our brief case. (We carried all our report forms, lunch, etc. in it and used it for a writing desk in the ca...
