Apologies in advance if this is answered already, I just couldn't find it.
As Indy V approaches I'm considering going in full gear (which would be a first for me) and wondered about the whip. Can it be carried in public, say, at the movie theater? It's hard to track down online but it seems as if it's legal to carry, in the US. Does anyone have experience with this? I was going to leave it home but if I could take it I'd like to....
Lol, I think you not carrying a firearm is a great "in" for carrying a bullwhip. Similar to the old trick of starting with a ridiculous request first to soften up the other party to agree to what you wanted all along!
Honestly, in their eyes, I think they probably reason that a movie nerd that goes all in is probably not the same type that would start a fight... and even if they do, ...with a bullwhip? Publicity for days!!! Win-Win for them!
Well, I called the theater. Twice, on 2 different days. Got 2 shoot from the hip responses. No bullwhip. A little bummed as I see others fully decked out but I'll enjoy my experience.
I did think it was quite funny to see all the Indy fans at the premiere in central London, all wearing bullwhips on their belt, which I would definitely class as an offensive weapon!
The bullwhip is a tool first and foremost. I don't know of anyone that uses it as a weapon aside from fictional characters like Zorro or Indiana Jones. Unless you're Anthony Delongis, it has very little value as an actual weapon to the normal joe who would easily be tackled and/or shot when using it. You need too much room to swing it and crack it. Being in a crowded space or surrounded by people basically neuters the ability of the thing.
I'm sure there's a "florida man" article out there where it's been used and I'm sure that person didn't end up well but other than that I don't see why anyone would care. As mentioned above, the odds of an Indy fan, dressing up in full gear going nuts and deciding to whip folks would be incredibly rare.
My guess is the No's that were given were 18 year old part time kids that just say no to make sure they save themselves a hassle. I know when I worked in customer service I didn't get paid enough to deal with the crazies..... not that we're crazy or anything....

I guess you could say a baseball bat is sports equipment too
They can hurt people and I wouldn't wear one on the street as the police may not look kindly on it, but if you're dressed as Indy I think they'd probably understand

I agree that it was probably some young person who is erring on the side of caution and who didn’t want to bother making sure
I don’t think people will care if you just show up with it in costume. I had 3 of my Indy friends show up with them and no one batted an eye. I’m disappointed that I decided to leave mine in the car.
My guess is the vast majority of movie theater staff wouldn't know the difference between a Disney souvenir whip and a David Morgan. I'd be more worried about getting movie snack schmutz on my gear. Have you ever put those seats under a flashlight?
Our local Alamo Drafthouse Cinema had no problem last year with my Classic Bullwhips 8 ft cowhide last year during the Father’s Day showing of LC. Nothing but compliments last night at Dial of Destiny.
Firearms/Holster... Context is everything on stuff like this but I'd air on the side of treating it the same way I would a real firearm (which is that its better concealed) when in public places.
When you are walking around dressed like Indy (or in full kilt and Scottish garb with bagpipes) my feeling is that 99% of people will just give you an odd look if they don't appreciate it and a compliment if they do.
Has to a local law enforcement person you can check with.
It can be deadly with the right person, but most are not experts, some are.
Myself, couple cracks I can do.
But I could never defend myself with it.
Inquire, can’t hurt to ask.
Just need a backyard or some place private to practice.
I agree with Indiana Croft, try checking with local law enforcement. Just don't pitch it to them as a deadly weapon, remember that it's an agricultural tool/noisemaker in most hands. It's only in the hands of a true master, using the correct technique, that it can be an effective weapon. The person you risk injuring the most when you start learning is, well, yourself I would never carry a whip around on my belt unless I'm at an event with a bunch of other Indy or whip enthusiasts. I did carry one to a drive-in theater to watch the Dial of Destiny. They didn't mind and asked for a whip cracking demo. I think if you kept it in a private area and didn't wear it out in public, you should be okay. But it wouldn't hurt to ask a local official of some kind.
I'M not very comfortable calling the police so I think I call the Norwegian customs/The customs office instead since they are handling the toll on all things that comes to Norway I think they would know the rules I really want a whip. Not sure Which one to get of Magnoli props deluxe or Wested whip though.
Magnoli's version is the way to go, even the non-deluxe version, since they are made quite well, in veg-tan leather if I remember correctly. It is also made to look the part.
The Wested version (according to the pics on the site) is quite poorly plaited, has poorly cut strands, and the taper is not too well executed. It is not really worth the £65+ shipping and taxes.
Agreed, the Wested whip, from what I can tell, is the same low quality as most costume level whips you can find posted on sites like Amazon or Ebay as "GENUINE Indiana Jones whips." They are generally poorly braided low-quality leather wrapped around a rope core with loads of binding to make up for the lack of any real structure. It is probably only worth a third of what they are selling it for.

Just my ¢2.

How are the Magnoli when it comes to delivery times and they have two colors so I'm not sure which color is the most screen accurate of them

If everything is in stock, it arrives quite quickly. I ordered twice from there and it was shipped with DHL. Around 5 days to reach Romania and then one-two days for Customs formalities.
When it comes to screen accuracy it's hard to say. Which movie, which scene? In the opening scene of Raiders you have a light whip, later you have a darker one, in the Imam. As for the Streets of Cairo scene... More complicated.
I would go with tan, since in time it will darken and over the years it will fit different scenes in different movies. But check with Indy Magnoli if the whips are veg tanned leather. He's a member here on C.O.W.
It also says on his site that you can request a pic of the whip before shipping to see if you like the colour.
Neither are good whips when it comes to cracking, aesthetically Magnoli is better, but if you want a whip that looks nice and cracks decently, I’d go with Todd’s Costumes. It won’t hold up as well as a custom made kangaroo whip, but out of the cheaper whip options I’ve seen it holds up the best.

Sadly Todd's costumes are sold out at the moment it seems. Most whips I've seen costs way to much for me.
Another consideration is go opt for a paracord whip. We have several members here who make them (check out the Vendors section on the main IndyGear site). While not screen accurate, paracord whips are generally much less expensive than the same length leather whip and 99% of the population won't know the difference.

That is a good cheap option for a long lasting whip. On top of this, some are based in Europe and you might skip the unpleasant Customs formalities you mentioned.

I only found expensive ones on the vendor page.Maybe I'M doing it wrong?
As an aside, if you've never had a whip before I would strongly recommend getting either a 6 foot or 8 foot length. Many people will get a 10 foot and whereas there were 10' whips used in ROLA and it looks great coiled on the belt, that length is very challenging to learn on. My first whip was a paracord 10' and I was very unsuccessful in getting it to crack. I was at a COW Queen Mary Summit and was able to borrow an 8' whip and got it to crack on my first attempt. Once I got the hang of it, I was able to switch back to the 10' and get it to crack. I later sold the 10' and have a 7' that is really easy to crack and looks just fine coiled on the belt for cosplay.

There is a nylon whip in the Bazaar right now.
What’s your price range?

I checked on your facebook. Those are some Great looking whips I will probably order from you when I get more clearance if it's allowed with whips in my country and my wallet is a bit more full again
