Newbie question

Post by maessive »

Hello to u Indy fans!

I am about to order my first Wested jacket.

As it is now my order will be as follows:
Authentic Lamb 44R TOD
Sleeves 25.5"
Two inside pockets
Gussets
Slide buckle instead of D rings
Cooton lining satin sleeves.

Questions: :?:
1) Is the Raiders not too short for normal wear?
2) Are the gussets uncomfortable when wearing the jacket?
3) What is the best looking/functional side fastener? (bronze)
4) whould I ask for other modifications?

1)It'll stop right below where you put your belt. If it's too short, you can go TOD style which is 2 inches longer(I think) and it'll stop about an inch before the tail bone.

2)I can't compare a Wested jacket without gussets, but guessets for me are pretty comfortable. I don't even notice that there's an extra piece of leather in the armpit.

3)Differnt strokes for different folks

4)Consider that the Wested jacket is a perfect fit jacket. So if you plan on wearing a thick sweater under it, you may want to consider increaing the size a bit.

Since Wested jackets are custom made, I’m not sure how or why you decided that you need a 44 R. Personally, if I were ordering from Wested I would follow exactly what Peter asks for as far as giving him precise measurements taken from a tailor or seamstress if you haven’t already done so, and tell him exactly what you want, like maybe slightly tapered sleeves, a tight fit, or a bit larger so as to wear layered cloths underneath, etc...

It’s been said before, but considering you are new, I will tell you that lamb will gather at the elbows more than cow or goat, so what you initially think is the correct sleeve length, may, in fact, not be. Most folks here will likely tell you to order at least an inch more to compensate for this. After all, you can always have the sleeve length shortened by most any tailor, but you can not have those barrel cuffs lengthened to any appreciable degree if they are too short.

I do not own a Wested, but do own many other jackets with gussets. Some swear they help, others say they don’t notice any difference, but I have never heard anyone who got them complain that they were uncomfortable. My personal opinion is that those made from two pieces of leather (which mine are) DO help in mobility and I’m completely oblivious to their presence as far as comfort.

IMO, I would opt for the anodized black rectangular sliders, especially for the lighter lambskin (functionally outweighing all other considerations) although they are also considered screen accurate by most.

Also, recently, it appears that people have taken to adding an additional inch to the front of their jackets so when it is zipped, the hem will appear even - front and back.

As far as other modifications, you might like a name tag above the inside pocket and the Wested label under the inside pocket:

Welcome! :)

Wested doesn't do the name tags anymore.

Ah, ok, thanks skywlkrinc, I had thought that it was just a temporary thing until the machine was repaired. It's hard to keep up with Peter sometimes. ;)

I think it was posted somewhere that they weren't going to repair the machine, and if they did it wasn't going to be any time soon.

Actually Peter told me he had the machine repaired, but it broke down again. It was an expensive repair and it is only used for the nametags.

Probably he will not have it repaired again.

I had the sleeves extended with 0.5 inch.

I aslo thought the sleeves might ride up in wear.
