Are the indy pants supposed to be roomy or tight?

Bags, Boots, Shirts and all other gear should be discussed here.

Are the indy pants supposed to be roomy or tight?

Post by Manwiththehat »

Hey all :) I got my Karolian dry goods indy pants today and I Love them but I'm wondering if maybe I ordered them a size to big or are they supposed to be roomy? I took a few pictures of me with them just so you can see :) If they are to big I just get someone to adjust them.

Indy pants are generally roomier than today's standard slim pants. After all they are supposed to be from 1930s.

I think they look great on you. I'd adjust the length though. They are a little bit too long now.

You could check some scenes from the movies to see how they drape on Harrison Ford -- if you can find shots of Indy actually standing still!

Also, check the internet for publicity stills or screen captures. If you think yours look too baggy, since they'll need to be shortened anyway, you can have a tailor take them in a bit.

The cuff can come up some, if you can find a decent tailor/adjuster you can get the military hem added to the leg so it sits flat at the #### and has one break at the front of the ankle too, rather an easy adjustment to make, and one that makes all trousers look rather superb. I use it on most of my bespoke orders now too, since I like the length and fullness it adds to the trouser/leg shape....

Indy pants though should absolutely be baggier in the upper thigh and rise area than all modern trousers would fit...There should be a lot more room in the rise, and the pleats allow a lot more space for the thigh too, so yes, tight on the waist, but loose in the thigh and calf too. Lovely fit for 90's hip hop fans... ;)

I'd also add that it looks like the rise is "too low" on you, but that's probably a result of the waist being at your hip, not at your waist. Indy wore his trousers up near his belly button, at the waist, not at the hip (again, as modern fitting trousers tend to), so there's a lot more space on yours as a result of that...Just raise the trousers up a touch and you should still be fine on that side too. :TOH:

It depends on if it's pre- or post- diet. :P ;)

Yes, they should be roomier. Yours look fine, as others said a tad too long. If you have them shortened, make sure the tailor knows to do a military hem.

I've always wondered if I should take in my NH trousers a bit as since you shorten the legs, they're wider and am unsure if there's too much circumference at the bottom once shortened.

They should definitely not be tight. Keep in mind that we would not punish ourselves with "skinny jeans" for another 75 years or so.

As others have said, if you get a military hem on those and wear them at your actual waist, I think they'll be spot on. You want the roomy fit. The pants can make or break the silhouette almost as much as the hat. :TOH:

I did a quick and dirty YouTube search and there are many videos about sewing a military hem. If she has the sewing skills to change the hem, she’ll be able to do a military hem, it’s just a variation.
