HJ/SA Fedora
Hi Peeps,
New to the forum.
I thought I'd share some information.
I spoke (emailed) to Swaine Adeney (Herbert Johnson) about a month ago, asking asking about their fedoras.
They stated that in 6 months time they were creating a new block for their Fedoras to match those of the Indy films.
They advised me that I should wait, since this replica would be as close to the orginal as possible, not a representation of their current model.
The cost if I remember correctly would be £165 - £195.
I myself intend on waiting till february, I fancy a fedora made by the original suppliers.
They did state that they would contact me when the block was ready.
Thought you aficionados may be interested.
Regards,

True, but if they end up using the original block like another member reported, then it may be worth it to some to finally get "the" HJ they've been wanting for a very long time! Still, I'd rather pay less for a pure beaver hat. If they can keep it at or below $300 US, then I can see a lot of people going for it.

I'll think I'll wait to someone else jumps on it first.

Hi,
Here is the original reply i got from Paul at SA.
I have still yet to confirm whether they intend using white lining, and what reference they intend using.
"Dear Sir,
Thank you for your email.
Mr. Swales retired a few years ago so I am replying on his behalf.
The replica hat we currently have does come with the 39mm Brown ribbon but is a slightly different felt than the one used for the original. The lining is also Black rather than White.
I have placed a link below which gives a little more information on the hat we currently retail.
We are currently in the process of reintroducing the original felt and changing the blocking process so the hat in the future is closer to the original, but this will take around six months. If you can afford to wait I would advise you to do so as you will receive a far closer hat to the original used.
If you are buying the hat because you like the look of it and do not require it to be an exact replica go ahead and order it from our site.
Kind regards,
Paul Vanoli

Hmmm... interesting news indeed. I do however have a sort of deja vu experience here. It's not the first time they talked about improving their "Indy", but I honestly keep my fingers crossed that they do.
Many fans want "THE original" and for many that just is the HJ. Period. I'd like to see a well made Indy Fedora from them for sure. Granted, 300$ is a lot of money for a pure rabit, especially considering the price for a rabit raw body (even in the best quality available).
BUT, as a WEARABLE collectible I think it's ok. If the sweatband quality and craftmanship are on par with what I've seen on Anjali's vintage HJ, why not?
It sort of reminds me of the grail diary: some prefer an exact replica of the actual prop - incl. most pages repeated several of times throughout the book. I reckon the same people would probably dig this "new" HJ. Then there are those, who want a grail diary "as it COULD have been" - with a story that can be read. I reckon these people would prefer a hand made hat from the best materials available or a vintage hat. Something a charakter like Indiana Jones would have worn.
I think there can't be enough choices!
Regards,
Marc

Welcome Harrison! I am a big Tru Calling fan as well.
This may be good news for some, but at the price, you are getting a lower quality fur that needs to have a block replicated. In other words, a new owner, with a new block using a sub-quality fur (as opposed to the beaver offerings we have available) using a different lining at a cost that means you are still paying for the name.
Not to knock them, but this is no more the "original" hat than any other offering out there. Of course, the more the merrier though.

You know, Todd mentioned a new block shape for the HJ, here awhile back. Seems like HJ is working on improving and that is a good thing. I will buy one from Todd when this gets in, so I think we will be able to get them cheaper over here.
If you are in contact with them, ask them to bring back the old HJ crest, as the oval was not used on the Raiders hat. It was either the hexagon or a pentagon burgurdy crest, or it may have been this one. Fedora

Umm....If I remember correctly, they told someone a little while back, that they were going to start using the original block, which they had found, and the go back to the original felt supplier.
Now, they say that they are in the process of making a new block. I am not really sure what they are planning on doing. I do hope that they finally get the details right.
