Screen used Raiders fedora up for auction in UK

Post by indy1936 »

Has anyone seen this in the news? "Prop Store said the whip used by Ford in Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom is poised to sell for between £50,000 and £70,000, while his fedora from The Raiders Of The Lost Ark is expected to sell for between £200,000 and £300,000."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45027242

The pinch looks screen accurate and there appears to be a turn.

Is that the same one Screenused sold years ago? (which was thought to be the hero hat because the sweat stains and aging powder marks matched up.)

It does appear to be the same hat as Screenused. Match up the bow and dirt spatterings. Anyone else look at this?

AAAAANNNDDDDDDDD..... if anyone over there can attend this auction it would be great to get a photo from above!

Thanks Jeff!

Woww...amazing hat

When they show the interior of the hat, we can clearly see that it was used with the sweatband fold it at the middle.
In order to tight the fit.

I asked Brandon and he said it was indeed ScreenUsed's hat. We have pics of it up on the main site, but it was cool to see the interior of it!

I thought the same thing!

At first I was surprised Norm wasn't geeking out more, but then it occurred to me Adam Savage is more of a hat guy and would have been bouncing off the walls to be that close to the fedora.

It's amazing how many little details the old guard of members here figured out through their research and years of trial and error. I've been reading through old threads since I joined and it never surprises me how much dedication and thought they put into this hobby. Those of us who have come since are really indebted to them. :TOH:

It would also amaze you on how much we 'learned' or 'figured out' that after years have passed we discovered was totally wrong!  :TOH:
That's why this hobby is always interesting, as no door has ever completely 'closed'.

So. I wonder if the folded sweatband was Ford’s way of keeping that hat from blowing off his head while on horse and truck? Makes sense to me.

I was not aware that this specific hat existed. It looks in remarkably good shape, even if it was cleaned.

I have to ask: we’re sure it’s legit, right?

Very exiting to see!

Yes. ScreenUsed had a posting about it MANY moons back with comparison pics to movie stills and backed its providence. Brandon is also a trusted collector/dealer.

I just get the article, the video won't play. :?

Based on the picture, that doesn't look like the same hat to me. I'd be shocked if Brandon would allow the fedora to be rebashed in that way. He's a fan/collector and would know the importance of having the correct bash. To say nothing of the potential damage that could be done to a hat of this age.

That's what they replied on Facebook "...not to worry, this was something that happened in transport to the production company and has since been sorted..."

Would like to know how a perfect teardrop can "happen" during transport ;)

Sorry, I don't know how to link to the post directly, but when you look on their facebook page you'll find it: https://www.facebook.com/PropStore/

Apparently, some employee, re-bashed the hat for the presentation.
This occurred AFTER the first video we saw.

COW member Fedoraiders (Jason) contacted Brandon immediately when he saw this disaster.
Talked with him about the importance of putting the original bash to it.
Brandon was very thankfull with him.
All this was shared by Jason on fb.-

So... an item expected to sell for approximately $300,000 (in American money) is handled so casually that "some employee" can arbitrarily manhandle it and reshape it? I thought the point of these auctions was to preserve the screen used aspects of the objects.

If this hat has been reshaped who knows how many times over the years, including this recent example, does it really qualify as the "screen used" hat anymore? While it may be the physical hat that appeared in some scenes onscreen (does anybody know, was this a Harrison Ford hat or a stunt double hat?), after having been reshaped by "some employee" for a presentation, there's little to be learned about the actual screen-used appearance. It has now lost any of its "screen used" significance by having been reshaped multiple times by various people to fit their opinion of the "best" or "most accurate" bash.

No value here for me, other than a lesson in how NOT to "conserve" relics of historical or pop-cultural significance.

Which is just as well. I doubt that I've earned three-hundred thousand dollars in my lifetime.

This is a HF "hero" hat. Way at the bottom of the Fedora section on the main IndyGear page there is a write-up of this hat. http://indygear.com/igfedora.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm absolutely STUNNED the hat would be allowed to be rebashed by some random staff member.

If I were ScreenUsed (the owner of the fedora) I'd be outraged given the change could impact the ultimate final auction price.

Is this the same hat displayed in the FB video from Prop Store's big auction display (was it at ComicCon?). That hat was in original movie form. Why would anyone at Prop Store re-bash it just before it goes to auction?
(it's at about the 8:50 mark in this video -- https://youtu.be/YGuJ9F9pWNA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Or are these 2 different hats?

All --

The hat has not been casually "re-bashed" in the sense of what I think you all are describing, based on the above commentary.

The hat it extremely soft and malleable. If you set it onto a head form, it will take the "wrong" shape, with the inside of the top pushed upward, rather than pushed down. Just the weight of the hat itself will do that to it. You can pop the center part right back down with your hand when you pick it up.

When we photographed it we took care to style it as it looked in the film. When it went out for some press opportunities, it was simply set onto a head form and took that natural shape -- it was never "Re-bashed."

I have handled film-used hats from TOD and LC and they are *much* more "set" -- the tops would not behave in the same way the Raiders hat does. But, again, the Raiders fedora is very soft and this is the reason you're seeing a different "bash" in different photos.

If you have any other questions on the hat please let me know.

Best,
Brandon

Thanks for jumping in and clarifying Brandon.
Its always a little unsettling when there is such strident opinion thrown about when so little is known about the situation or circumstances the item finds itself in - your clarification (and pictures) are sincerely appreciated.

My offer to you and Stephen re the fedora and whip still stands.

All the best mate,

Brandon,

thanks for clarifying and the high-res pics. Sorry for being a pest, I assume you're getting bombed with messages right now and it is much asked, but it'll be awesome if you or someone else could take some measurements for the Indy fan community (brim width front / sides, bow width, bow middle piece, front pinch, ribbon width), so that we hatters could replicate this iconic hat based on some facts. All we know is from hearsay, pics and trying out. I could also send you felt samples of about 15 different brown tones so that we can figure out what this "sable" color really is (the inside of the crown should still have the original felt color without much fading).

Again, sorry for being annoying, but I think after the auction there will be no more chance to find out.

I have a Burlington Sable Hat-not a Poet unfortunately!(it was a Trilby,a size too big for me but I bought it because the colour is spot on to the screenused hat pics, but I'm looking forward to taking it to London and seeing how close the colour and Felt is in person :D

The Fedora looks totally rebashed into a tear drop. How can it be so soft to take on the shape of a hat stand. I own a borsalino alessandria thats super soft and its bash come undone easily but not enough to conform with the sides and back creasing around a circular hat stand perfectly. Someone rebashed it and now that sought after Indy bash everyone trys to recapture is gone. Maybe fans can take photos of it on display and show what the outcome is now. This hat just lost its value. Its like when that old lady repainted that painting of Jesus lmao
Should be in a museum anyway not in the hands of a collector. The last guy who owned it had it CLEANED btw.

May as well send it off for a reblock now. At least we have ScreenUsed's pics and that video footage. Even if it's been put back, it's only somebody's version of how it was before.
