Don't mistake stiffness/hardness with higher quality.

Stiffness is created by the amount of shellac added to the felt. Cowboy hats are super stiff because a lot of shellac is added so they retain their shape. Most dress fedoras have a lower amount of shellac added so the felt is softer.

Quality come entirely from the felt. Fur felt (rabbit, hare or beaver) is superior to wool. You can have a wool hat that's stiff as wood that won't hold up as long as the softest of fur felt hats. David uses the best rabbit and beaver felt you can get in the US.

As Chris mentioned, most Indy fans prefer their hats with as little shellac as possible because the movie hats, especially ROLA, were very soft/floppy. Beyond replicating the movie look, in a practical sense you want enough shellac so the hat holds it's shape, but enough floppiness so when the wind blows the brim 'gives' a little and the hat doesn't go flying off you head. David rides that line very well with his hats.

Beaver felt is more dense than rabbit, but that in itself doesn't necessarily contribute to the overall stiffness. I have an AB in beaver (my Sahara colored 'Michaelson') that's so broken in it behaves in wind exactly like you see in ROLA.

I have a few questions(I know, I always do) about these hats. So what is the price for a standard raiders hat in rabbit? And how is the felt? Is it the same as Akubras federation? I would like a hat where the felt is tight together and not loser and more soft. And is it a better quality then Akubras? And can he shape it to whatever scene from the movie you want?

I would either email or PM David and ask him.

As far as most of your questions, the answer is yes. Also, most of them are answered at the beginning of this thread. Shoot him a message, David is a very nice guy and he can make some seriously nice hats.

I recently saw that guy in a time travel movie and his father was played by Rufus Sewell. I have no idea who he was and he seemed an odd choice to play his son, they looked nothing alike.

I still hope to get better shots. For me the Fedora is the most difficult to photograph as lighting, camera distance and angle affect the shots so much.

Also, I'm still working in the pinch and overall shape. The pinch is still a bit loose for Raiders, but it's getting there! :H:

I love this hat! Thank you, David!!! :D

Sorry I'm late to the party, but Micahel, that is one of the best looking Raiders I've seen in a long time! Well done, LLS!

Hey Tundraider. That is an awesome raider :TOH: . Now that style speaks to me, how did you describe the style you wanted to LLS? And is your head a long oval or a regular oval?

Like he said - it's a Garrison "Streets of Cairo" fedora. You can find it here:

A very competitive two-and a quarter in rabbit, or five in beaver.

Anyone heard from David? I have a hat on order with him, and sent an email about 8 days ago. Haven't heard a thing. Sent another 2 days ago thinking maybe it didn't go through. Still nothing. Hope everything is alright with him. Not a big fan of no communication though.

I truly hope so. Last I heard was the 5th of last month and my hat as on the block. Haven't heard a thing since. First time I spent such money, hard earned, on something like a hat.

Even weirder is the fact that his surveying company has a disconnected phone number.

Edit: so that people know, he has responded finally. Apparently hugely busy and going to work "over time" on things this weekend. At least work is good :)

I can't describe how anxious I am for more info, and getting my hat. I really have no doubt that his work will be exquisite. Was told 8 - 10 weeks, and we are on 9. How do you guys deal with it? I rely on communication yo calm me down, but David is busy as heck apparently. I can't wait!!! LOL

I must say that the hats shown here really inspired me to order from David. I asked his timeframe for delivery and was told 8 - 10 weeks. I have no doubt it's going to be a great hat, but we are just about in week 12. Craftsmanship is only a small part of a business or service. I have had to plead to get some communication. Everytime I get word my hat is "on the block now" or "just about to be shipped" or "getting finished this weekend" then I don't hear anything! I really hate to vent but I need somewhere to. As it sits, my next hat won't ever be ordered from him. I had another ordered from someone else as well, they stayed in contact, even if I didn't ask. -That- is customer service.

So frustrated

Edit: Got word! Shipped this morning. Expected delivery: Tomorrow.

Will get some shots of the crown this weekend. David said he felt like it was a great version of a hat in the 40s.

When I initially emailed him about making a hat, I asked for exactly what he made me. The main thing, besides the color, and crown bash, was that I wanted a "rough" feel to it. I don't do refined very well. I think he hit the nail on the head.

I tend to agree, and it's not a great shot, but there are actually the points in there, just most aren't very well defined. ;)

Oh btw, if I place an order for a garrison raiders, how do I tell him that I want the hat to be taperless like the raiders hat (I have a round oval head so I am concerned about the taper of the hat)? I ow that in the PayPal, I use the instructions to the merchant. But I am wondering if I put it down there, and if I request it, will it not make it the same as the raiders hat from the film?
