Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
After 2 days of reading I finally reached the end of this thread. I can not tell you all how beautiful each and every hat is. My favorite is the green fedora, cant remember the page.
Hopefully in a few months I will be a proud owner of a penman at as well as my order was placed and payment went out today.
Thank you to all of you who have posted pictures. It really gave a newbie like mea good idea of the type of quality and attentiveness put into a penman hat. I count it as money well spend.
I received a paper crown today in the mail, not sure what that means but it is yet another step closer towards my hat. I am so excited!

You'll be very pleased, just follow Mr. Penman's directions and he will make you an exceptional hat, I have no doubt.

It means you are about to do the most important part (besides paying for the hat.) Try it on and see if it fits.james73084 wrote:I received a paper crown today in the mail, not sure what that means but it is yet another step closer towards my hat. I am so excited!
If not I think he sends a paper tape measure that you can use to create a crown. To be extra certain have someone measure your head 3 - 5 times with a cloth tape measure, write down each measurement and send the whole works including the measurements back.
It's an approximate exercise. You just need to be fairly close as the sweatband will shrink or stretch slightly to fit anyway
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
We got my measurements down and they are being sent back today. Now all I need to do is wait. A long wait it will be indeed but.....It will be worth it. Mr.Penman has been great with awesome customer service!

Well, to let you in on a little bit about me, perhaps you will understand her position lol.
For the past 8 years my hobbys have grown, all of them being expencive.
I collect weapons (My most recent purhase being an ar-15 and an aimpoint compm2 sight for it around the time the senate was going to try and ban them so I paid waaay over what it was worth to make sure I had one).
Other then that I also play video games. My computer gets an upgrade every 2-3 years at around 1 grand everytime.
Then there is this new hobby which is collecting indy hats . The wife has limited me to 1 gun a year, 1 computer upgrade a year and now one hat a year. I have been patient and stuck to this. Trust me when I say that if I did not, my family would probably be broke
I am happy with the arrangement.
(Please note that this year limit does not account for my birthday or Christmas. Last year I got my ar-15 as a just because I wanted one reason. I then got a 12 guage double barrel sxs shotgun for my birthday and a smith and wesson M&P Shield 9mm for Christmas as well as a $300 keyboard)
Not trying to brag just trying to explain the situation as it is. I have a funny feeling that we will be ordering a raiders fedora as well as a Temple of Doom this year . Anyway, Mr. Penman keep up the great work.

John, do you have any Henry Adventurebilt's left? I couldn't find photos on your website / facebook.
Also, can you please help me determine the price range of a Raiders style Beaver felt. Website shows $450 - $525 but how is as low as 450 but as high as 525?

Thats awesome! He was great in Tombstone and Walking Dead. Nice work! I need to ask, do you watch Walking Dead?
Also, I'm very seriously considering a new hat and I want to get one of yours. Do you have any advice for me as far as sizing? Here is my dilemma. I usually have short hair, but in the winter I let it get longer. (Not substantial, but enough to make my hats sized when I had a buzz feel tight). I know you send out a measuring tape to measure a few times. Would you recommend measuring and ordering when my hair is longer? I know, pretty stupid question/ predicament. Thanks for any help.

Yes, my kid and I watch it every week. It was nice working with Mr. Rooker. I have seen him in a bunch of stuff and he was great in TWD. He is a really nice personable guy.
as for the measurements. never a stupid question. It depends on a few things. I do send out crowns but am refining a even better system. you guys should know me by now, I'm always looking for better ways of making the process better and better. I think a phone call might be a good step as things can get lost in the written word sometimes. heres my number 971-246-1832. feel free.

I'm like most, like the pier scene but it's hard to nail down all the looks because that hat specs seem to change from scene to scene.
Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
That's what I've been noticing. It also seems to get smashed up quite a few times in LC too with visible dents and such. I never noticed this stuff until I started scrutinizing to buy one. I guess I'd like something that says LC quite loudly. It seems my Raiders hat or any well made Raiders hat for that matter is almost unmistakeable and universally noticed as Indy. I also feel that way about LC, however not quite as much.BendingOak wrote:I'm like most, like the pier scene but it's hard to nail down all the looks because that hat specs seem to change from scene to scene.

In general beaver felt is a higher quality felt compared to rabbit felt. The beaver hairs are smaller with barbs so it felts tighter/denser. It will hold up better to wet weather.

I also think beaver gives a dressier finish. The fedora I wear with regularity is an hat that was made for me for Art Fawcett based on a hat my grandfather used to wear. It was a dress hat that he wore the bejeebus out of, so I opted for beaver felt.
I'm in the process of shopping for a Raiders lid. When I get that, it will be rabbit. To me beaver just feels too dressy for IJ. But that's just my $0.02..

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
I hear that a lot about how beaver is dressier than rabbit. I think that has more to do with the pounce than the felt itself.
Granted beaver can take longer than rabbit to break in and get super floppy, but that can also be influenced by the amount of stiffener in the felt. My Sahara colored AB is beaver and has broken in so nicely it flaps in the wind like Indy on horseback in ROLA.

Indiana Jeff

That is true! I guess I have just never seen a rougher pounce on beaver felt. My VS is smooth as a baby's bottom and the softest felt I've ever touched. Perfect for what I wanted, but IMO too nice for an Indy.
Of course, a KOTCS hat is beaver but I try to suppress that movie from my memory.

Re: The Penman post 'em up Pages....The Adventure Continues.
Not to run too far afield in this thread, but I have both rabbit and beaver hats with various pounces with some rabbit being smoother than some beaver. My AB ROLA in beaver that was made by Steve and reblocked by Marc is super smooth. The a fore mentioned Sahara AB is less smooth than one of my rabbit hats. Not that any of them are shaggy dogs, but I consider my Sahara less 'dressy' than my two rabbit hats because the pounce is a bit longer.
Meanwhile, back at the thread......

smooth pounce doesn't = dress hat. take the satin finished hats for example. the finish on a satin finished hat is a very long finished hat and at times is considered more dressy then a shorter finished hat that most here are used to.

That's almost one of those "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand" things.ChrisMD wrote: How come people order beaver over rabbit if the movie hats were rabbit?
The simple answer, though, is because I prefer it.
The slightly longer answer is that, in general, beaver felt is a lot nicer than rabbit. I has a denser feel, it's softer, it shapes and reacts better, holds its shape better, stands up to the weather better, tapers less quickly, lasts longer . . .
Personally, while fully understanding where the costume folks got the hats in the 1970s and 1980s, (and what was, and was not readily available at that time) I am pretty sure that a guy who had a PhD and a teaching position in the 1930s, with that background, and who according to the original descriptions was supposed to be a kind of 1930s James Bond who liked really nice things would have had beaver felt, instead of rabbit. At least that's part of my rationalization for spending $500 +/- for something that does basically the same job as one of those canvas camo things my friends get for $20.00.

Not sure about the wait, but as to mix matching the gear our own Tundrarider said it best in another thread...
Tundrarider wrote:If I may be so bold, please allow me to make a suggestion. Don't concern yourself with trying to match your gear to one of four films.
Attempting to get all your gear to match one movie will limit your choices and quite honestly take some of the fun out of your costuming venture. You can get lost in the details that no one will notice anyhow.
The gear from all four films "mix and match" perfectly" with each other.
I went this route and put together a decent outfit, enjoying the freedom to pick and choose each piece of gear simply by it's own merit. For example, I like the Raiders gun belt best, but also like the Crystal Skull holster best. And they work great together, simply as "Indy Gear."
The gear all works together; nothing is ever going to "clash" if you mix your gear choices

Estimated time is 2-3 months and working hard to get it down even more.
As for which gear to shoot for. It's all in every individual taste. Some like to shoot for one movie and others like to a overall Indy look. Some like to do each and every movie. It's all up to you. I guess you can always start with a oval all look and then start working on each film.
