Well, Mitch, it stuck. I will say it again. It looks awesome. I've been thinking of grabbing one for myself, lately. Wear it well. It appears you always do.

I just wanted to write an update on the condition of my Todd's Raiders. Last week our film crew was shooting in an open field all day. It started out as a sunny day, but by the end of the day a tempest blew through that had us wrapping early for the day. I was wearing the Fedora all day and got completely drenched to the core in it. I allowed it to dry in the hotel room for the next two days. Unfortunately it shrank and tapered quite a bit. Also having worn it in the open sun for two weeks now, it has turned an olive green. I can flip the brim to contrast the two shades of brown on the hat. The ribbon also shrank a great deal. I intentionally put the hat through these rigors in order to check the durability of this lid. I'll let others draw their own conclusions based upon my experiences.

Does todd know about this? I don't think he would be happy with green fedoras. Because I'm kinda not.

I haven't contacted Todd directly. I thought I'd post my findings here as a public notice. Again I want to state that I am responsible for inflicting this exposure upon the hat and thus its reaction to the elements. I am not upset because I know that I'm to blame for the act of submitting it to these conditions; I'm just shocked by the quick effect since I've only had the hat for a few months.

This commentary isn't meant to impune Todd or his business by any means. I am still grateful for his services and other product.

I wore mine through a lot of snow and rain and it's starting to show a little. The brim is wavy in spots, the crown is getting a slight taper to it, the ribbon appears to have tightened up a bit, and it's showing a light green tint. HOWEVER, it's still my everyday go-to hat and I think I like it even more than when I first took it out of the box. Now it has character. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Ok, I've REALLY tired to get good at bashing my fedora's but i just don't think I've got the touch haha. I wanted a mix of LC curl and CS bash and I don't think I did very well. It's okay don't get me wrong and I try bashing while watching penman's youtube videos while doing it and again I just cant seem to get it right. So here are some recent pics.

Aragorn, you've got the side dents on the crown too high and too far back. Reduce them and you'll get the squarish look back.

The brim you're doing fine, but trying to put curl in a brim is not easy. You'll need some hat stiffener and a round ring sort of object to iron the brim on.

Be careful! Too much steam and you'll end up with a cone. You don't need steam on these crowns.

Todd, while I was at Baron's I picked up a bottle of Kahl Hat Stiffener. Figured if I ever got an old worn out akubra I'd try it out on that. Would you recommend this hat stiffener to Aragon?

Yeah, we sell it too. It does work well. You can put it on as light or heavy as you want. Start light and add it as you need it.

I previously had this lid with a Raiders-like bash (A tight crease but without the turn of the brim)
However, over time the bottom of the crease kept getting pressed out by my head, and I eventually decided to just make it into an LC style instead

My Coyle's Raider has been on some great adventures. It went with me to Europe last summer when I went with my university. It's been a great companion.

MOD EDIT: I changed a couple of links into a pictures for you. :TOH:

You've got a pretty good bash on it!

Mine had started as a Raiders bash, then I made it a LC for awhile.

Hat took a swim though, so I've got to go and get it reblocked. I don't think I've heard of one of these hats being reblocked before, should be interesting to see the result.

I like your album cover:

Image

What's the name of your band?

It looks like an awesome trip! I noticed in a few shots (of course, I'm looking at the hat!) it looks like the crown has popped up in the back. If I were there, I wouldn't be able to resist reaching out and pushing it down in the back!

LOL! Nope. No band. Just a bunch of guys taking in all of the sites. The hat did that the entire trip. I would pinch it down in the back, and later that day I would notice it had popped back up. It doesn't do that anymore.

I'm gonna be sending my Raider in for a reblock today. I'm shipping it over to Gary White in Buffalo.

I'd rather not post pics of what it currently looks like, but looking at the cockpit scene in ToD...... it looks kind of like that, maybe worse. :[

I'll post in a few weeks once I get it back with the results.

Probably closer to Raiders. I've been digging the looser pinch though, so it'll probably be more of a LC.

Mr. White talked about the brim curl over the phone. Still haven't made up my mind on that yet, I suppose I'll have to figure it out by the time it arrives at his shop.

Totally OT Musing: Isn't it weird? The phrases we use? 1,000 years from now, when some future civilization reads what we wrote, how much debate will there be about what "have a good one" meant? No doubt there will be scholarly papers written and books written about American idioms of the 21st century.

Alright, so here goes.

Gary White has been working on my hat for over a week now. He did want to impress upon me that the state I had sent it to him in was not very good, which I'll admit to. Getting my hat soaked through resulted in significant shrinkage, and I can attest that before sending it to Gary it looked less like an Indy fedora and more of a misshapen lump of felt.

Yeah.

Taking this in mind, I had him reshape it "as best as he can", and this is the result.

Image

Raiders? Not by a long shot.

However, it's a very nice rendition of a Temple of Doom fedora. The crown is shorter, and there's a slight amount of taper.

I think I'll have one of the few "Coyle's Temple" Fedoras now after this.

I'll have to wait until it arrives! :P

It's being shipped on Friday. I eagerly await it's arrival though.

There's a learning lesson here somewhere, probably less to do with getting a hat wet (which should be obvious) and more to do with horseplay around freezing bodies of water.

...maybe I've said too much.

Alright, the reblocked hat is here!

Firstly, it's a bit stiff now. It was soft and floppy, but now is stiff. I'm not complaining, as it is in a likable shape.

It's a Temple of Doom fedora for sure. The crown height, the brim width, even the slight tapering.

To me, it looks kind of like a Bridge scene hat or a Slave Children's Crusade scene hat.

Todd,

Any news on the availability of the Raider fedora? From your post saying 3 weeks ETA it looks like it's been about 5 weeks. BTW, how much are they when available? I'm scrambling to get my IJ costume together for an 80s party this Saturday and was hoping not to have to use the Dorfman I bought / "reshaped" for a Doctor Who (Tom Baker) costume.

Thanks!

Yes, I just called the shop and heard the bad news. I DO NOT WANT TO WEAR AN OFFICIAL LICENSED INDIANA JONES FEDORA on my first "Indy" adventure!

It looks like I'm out of luck though. Saturday fast approaches, and I'm running out of options. Doctor Who hat (smashed up dorfman), you're my only hope. Don't worry, I won't be taking pictures (sad).

Hey Todd

regardless of the mishap you had with that batch of hats, can you confirm the felt on these is actually better than the previous version ?
