Did you add those snaps to the jacket, or do they offer it that way? I have no experience with G&B, but have always admired the jacket. What we need to see is a picture of you wearing it in the field, covered in desert dust! Thanks for the pic.

Weston
Hi Weston,

The snaps do not come with the G&B jacket--I added them later. Here's the link to the thread about when I decided to get snaps added: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46921&hilit=Goat

Although I brought it along for this past summer's excavation at Tel Akko, we were on the coast and it was just too hot and humid for it. At the Ramat Rachel excavation, some mornings it was cool enough for a jacket, but I didn't have it yet. But I'll keep looking for the opportunity--thanks! ;)

I'm not Scott, but my 44T sleeves are 25 inches.

Regards !Michaelson
I have a 44 tall and always felt the sleeves were just a little short.
Well ... they are 24 inches at best.
I could use that extra inch.

NS,

It looks like your G&B is breaking in nicely. It takes some time and work, but it's worth it. I need to add a few pics.

Really? You sure you had a 44T? :-k I just this minute double checked the measurement on mine, and they're a shade over 25 inches in length. It was an OTR order too.

That was the problem I had with their 42 sizing. Those sleeves ARE 24 inches, and I, too, need that extra inch...hence I moved up to a 44.

Okay, now I'm confused. I have a 42T and my sleeve is 25 inches. I have long arms and the G&B sleeve is nice and long.

That's because it's a 'tall' rather than a regular size. It would have 25 inch sleeves. The regular has 24 inch sleeves.

Like I said, my 44T is a shade OVER 25 inches.

Where do you measure the sleeves from? Also where is the proper place for the cuff to come to when standing? Mid hand or wrist?
thanks

I measure mine from the seam where the sleeve attaches to the shoulder down to the end of the cuff, and the cuff should end mid hand. Most tailors, though, measure from neck across shoulder, then down the arm that is slightly bent to just past the wrist, slightly above mid hand.

That's always been at tricky one at best, as if your arm isn't at the exact correct angle, you could add or lose an inch or two in the final measurement. That's why a professional is always your best bet for taking this particular type measurement....or someone with good sewing/measuring skills.

You need to also account for 'ride up' at the elbow. If you end it at the wrist, the first time you bend your arm, the end of your sleeve will be 2-3 inches above your wrist. Mid hand is where you need to measure to when the arm is straight.

Here are a couple of new photos of mine, taken with my new camera. Since I've lost about 12% of my body fat over the past 5 months from exercise and proper eating, it hangs quite a bit differently (and looser) than earlier photos.

I've had this jacket for about a year and a half now, had snaps added to the storm flap, and have been rough on it: wadding it into a ball and dropping on the concrete next to me when sitting outside, or wearing it in the rain and then wadding it into a ball and throwing it into the closet without drying it first.

I'm not trying to make this into a "Nebraska Schulte album", so please share your Expedition photos, too!

I'd heard that if you want a G&B to fit you right, then order a size down, so I tried it just recently with Lao Fing. I have to say that if any of you are looking for a new, or a like new G&B 42R in goathide, you should really think about his jacket. His is really nice and the leather is superb! I mean, to get practically a brand new jacket at that price, one that will last you the rest of your life is a real steal! Anyway, I tried his and it did not fit as I would have wished, so it was sent back to him and he has posted in the Cairo Bazzar. For me, the best angle was to order my true size.

If you have a 44R in goatskin, "new-ish" and would like to sell it, let me know.

O.K.
Here are some pics that I just loaded up to Photobucket.
Most of the aging is natural except from some that I did when I first got it.
I wear the jacket all the time and use it for loading in my show which requires the
carrying of old wooden crates and wagon wheels, etc.

I will post more later of the collar (which is quite cracked and about to be replaced) and the back.

I'll also post a full length photo too. I have always thought that the sleeves were an inch or two short for a 44 tall.

Thanks for the advice Nebraska.

I'd like to know this as well. The jacket itself is AWESOME!!!! I don't ever recall seeing a g&b with that much wear. As to the collar, try some lexol on it before you try to replace it. I would think a new collar on that jacket would look a little strange...

I'm alittle confused about why I have seen a few GB goatskin jackets now that are aged really well. MK's old jacket ( I believe Mark owns it now) Baldwyn's Goat. some other dude's goatskin and this one above. I have never seen a wested goatskin looking like this afer many years of hard wear or any other goatskin for that matter unless its 50 years old. does GB use a different goatskin? a better quality that ages better? not that plasticy extremely hard surfaced skin.

Yeah, I own 3....MK's first production model, one of the prototypes, and a newer version from about 4 years ago.

They're hard working jackets and will last a lifetime with proper care, but then I'm biased. ;)

My old dark brown goat from Wested (2002?) aged really well. I wish I had kept it, but it was a little too small on me.

That's not what I found. My Wested thick goat (2002) aged very quickly. The colour faded and wore like I had distressed it on purpose. My G&B took longer.

Depends on the age of the Expediton and what tanning procedure the G&B is too.

In the beginning, you could get them in either vegetable tanned or chrome tanned goatskin, among other things.

The vegetable tanned version is what you see aging so nicely, but is no longer available for the Expedition.

The dark brown chrome absolutely bullet proof goatskin is what you get now. It just takes longer, and more effort to age.

I believe most of the Wested goatskin is the vegetable tanned variety.

The dying for each batch of goatskin can vary. Some of the goatskin from G&B ages well. It also seems that their dark brown goatskin in general shows age better than their seal. At a certain point, it was thought that the seal was the closest to the original film jacket. Wested's own version of this was "original brown". Everybody (COWers) jumped on the bandwagon with regards to the lighter shade. Years later, the original dark brown from the early 2000's are the ones that catch people attention here.

Today people are using their own judgement as to what color they want, what skin to buy, and what jacket maker to buy from. It's kinda cool actually.

Getting back to the subject, for many the dark brown is a better Indy color than the seal (it comes in dark brown standard anyway), and the aging process shows more, which is preferable for many. If I was going to buy a new G&B goatskin jacket today, I'd opt for the dark brown. I have the seal and it's great, I'm just saying.

I will have to say that you almost CANNOT knock the color off of my 2002 Wested Goat! It is one of the reasons why the guy who sold it to me sold it for in the first place. It just doesn't artificially distress well. Just so happens to be one of the reasons I love it!

I'm curious where the much touted "Four inch" measurement came from when discussing extra room in the jacket's chest area. If I have a 44" inch chest and if the jacket measured 44 inches it would be skin tight, of course. But adding only four inches (spread over 44 inches) and you haven't added much. Perhaps the four inch rule was intended on adding "four to the front and four to the back," which would be more reasonable. I mean, it's a jacket, not a shirt.... :)

My Expedition (44T) measures about 26 inches across the front and the same across the back equaling 52 inches overall. Which comes out to an extra 4 inches in front and 4 inches in back! :D

Michael :TOH:
I said this because I sent an e-mail to G&B asking about the measurements of a 36 S and R, which is my size. And this is what they answered:36S

Chest: 47”

Hip: 38.5”

Shoulder: 19”

Sleeve: 32”

Back: 23”

36R

Chest: 47”

Hip: 38.5”

Shoulder: 19”

Sleeve: 33”

Back: 24.5”

That would make the chest measurement something like 23.5... :Dietrich: which would be enormous on my frame... :[

Yeah, minor point here on the "OMG it's HUGE on me!" element. I JUST got my G&B 40R off-the-rack jacket to try on for size. The jackets run a bit big, but when zipped up, it felt fairly snug in the chest. Suitably snug, I mean. I tried it on with a medium-weight sweater and it seemed just fine. I wore it to work today in a regular dress shirt, and it also seemed perfectly fine as far as fit. If folks want, I can post the estimated measurements they told me about the jacket.

It's a bit boxy, but not horribly so. I'm still gonna end up going with a custom job instead of the OTR version, simply because my drop (shoulders-to-hips ratio) is a bit more pronounced than the average 40R, I guess, and I'd like the jacket to really conform to ME.

I also think that you'll find the jacket will fit better and look better over time and with some leather dressing applied to soften the leather up just a bit. Out of the box, the leather's pretty stiff, which only contributes to the "boxy" look. Wear it in the rain, do some leather dressings, etc., though, and you'll probably be just fine. Plus, with a little extra space, you can wear the thing in winter with a heavier sweater, making this a three-season jacket (assuming your neck of the woods still has more than two seasons and an abbreviated transition phase between the two...).

Re: Show us your Expeditions! / Any Distressed Expeditions?

As promised (yeah, I know...months ago, I promised this; but, hey...it's been a TOUGH Spring with work...better late than never, right?) the pictures of my naturally distressed Goatskin Expedition jacket...the old vegetable tanned goatskin, that is....I don't know if you'd get the same effect with the chrome-tanned stuff.

Enjoy!
