How long ago was it that you asked that, crismans?
I double checked and I got Joe's reply back on February 25.

It was a nice sunny day today, so I tried a couple of cellphone shots. My (badly in need of cleaning and re-blocking) PB.

Then I can tell you the best way to get the look. It's similar to the formula for a perfect lawn.

Look how that felt bulges and warps around and under the ribbon. That's just insane. Is that their rabbit? My rabbit has done a little warping but not that much.

I haven't ever sat on any of my hats. That seems to have happened over time as the hat has tightened up on me. I can now wear it at up to about 45 mph (this was in a motorboat last summer) without any concern for it blowing off. It's probably about 1-2 cm smaller than the nominal 60 cm of a size 71/2 now. If I find a fabric tape I'll try to get an actual measurement.

Well, that being the case, it appears to be a hat well loved, well worn, and good to go for many years to come. That said, a clean/reblock may be in order sometime in the near future. ;)

A characteristic of repeated exposure to heat and perspiration/moisture. My Penman exhibited those characteristics to a lesser degree (since it was only a couple of weeks) when it was used during dig season IV.

I never purposely abused my PB's, just wore it in all weather and conditions, and it kinda became a shrunken, tapered mess, that doesn't even make a good ToD cockpit hat any more. Sad, it was my only Indy hat for about 9 years.

Here's when I first got it in 2000.

About three years ago:

Nearing retirement.

I finally gave it to my son, who wears it better than I do.

Thank you friends! I gave it to him because he tries to rip the one off my head and give it an SoC treatment. This was just easier. I love that he loves the hat, but should make him one that fits better so it's not just a "dress up" hat.

Michaelson, yep, I contacted Joe about an overhaul, but thought it was a bit pricey at $105 (when a new hat is $205)! I decided to earmark $105 towards a Adventurebilt. :)

Notice the "Sage" hat in this link, about half way down the page:

http://www.pbhats.com/INDY/Default.htm

This has always seemed to be the closest color reproduction to the sea plane hat in Raiders. I've not seen the hat, but from the image on the site, it really looks close.

Anybody know if they're planning a sale anytime soon? I'd really like to get one of their custom Indy straw hats for my beach trip this summer.

Let me rephrase. It arrived on time, 2-3 weeks, but was too big. I believe Tundraider had the same issue (ordered @ the same time). Just be sure to let them know you are a COW member and a few of us had issues with the hats running larger than our custom (for me Penman) sizes. Fits perfect after I sent it back.

I have two as a matter of fact. The 'Michaelson' you see rotating in 360 view on their website was the prototype, and originally owned by Sergei. I now own that hat. A gift from the 'crew' here. Having once been owned by Sergei, and the prototype to boot, it holds an honored place in my collection. :notworthy:

The other I have was purchased and given to me by another VERY great group of COW members. I'm still tickled by that gift to this very day, and that occurred the year the hat was introduced! :notworthy:

It's still in immaculate condition, and was the one I wore at the QM many years ago. Find the QM summit photos from 2003 (I think) and you'll see it on my head.

Here's one from Minnesota Jones website.

Image

Needless to say, I'm on the left. That's my Borsalino 'Michaelson' in an LC bash.

(A side observation. Isn't it interesting....I have the same dumb expression in my avatar taken in 2010 as I did in the one above, shot in 2003. #-o )

I've had my hat from PB for a little while now and still love it. Took some FE to it last week just to knock that 'I'm a new hat' look off it, but it doesn't look like ive been held up in the desert. I'm surprised they aren't talked about more.

The wife and kids got me a PB Indy gift certificate for Christmas. Went in on the first Monday in January for fitting. Twelve week turnaround....can't wait. I have window shopped at PB for years...I'm 25 minutes from Fort Worth. Went with the Raiders in 50/50. Pics when I get it! :)

Nice PB - the ribbon looks a little light, or is it just the lighting?

I think I remember saying mine went M.I.A many pages back - well, I get it back sometime in the next couple of weeks... I'm nervous, having not seen it in almost 2 years - will it still be in tact, will the fur just need a brushing to feel good as new... just one of many questions racing through my head. :anxious:

What does a PB Custom Indy Temple of Doom style fedora look like after 2 years and 2 1/2 weeks in a police evidence locker?

Looks nothing like when I last saw it - happy the ribbon still looks good, dunno if the custom indy hats still have this ribbon color.

Hopefully when I send it back to the 'Bros they can fix 'er up to look / feel as good as new. :x

Long story, loads and loads of bull**** [being railroaded through the legal system on BS charges, railroaded through the system thanks to BS accusations that were too dangerous to fight [as in, if I didn't take a plea of probation and lost in court it'd be 9 yrs in prison] that ended up separating me from my hat, laptop, a pair of shoes, a USB drive, and some notebooks for 2 years and 2 1/2 weeks.

The only "real" Indy hat I've ever owned was a PB custom. Absolutely love it. Unfortunately, there is now a hole in the crown, so it's been retired.

Here's a shot of the PB I got from Texan Scott... this is the first time I've really worn it. 3 days at Boracay, apparently it was ranked #2 by Trip Advisor as one of the best beaches in the world this year.

Despite of the (almost over) summer heat and some rain (usually in the morning), the hat held up great. I wore it to the beach so it would adjust to my head as I haven't been able to wear it that often. So now the sweatband has slightly conformed to my head (although, I still have the foam tape in) and now fits much better. On my way over to a meeting today, I even wore it as the rain was really pouring.

Image

Here's a link to the full album in case you want to see more shots of Boracay... just in case you want to visit.

Thanks, TS!!!

Just couldn't get the brim distortion that's so famous with the Raiders hat. No matter how much I turn it, it just won't distort. It would take a very silly amount of turn to make it distort and with that, it will distort in a very bad way. Hahaha!

One issue that you may be up against is the shorter brim. It was meant to be a LC hat. Keep working the brim, it'll give.

Sounds like you have a round head instead of an oval head. If that's the case, the turn won't come naturally for your head shape.

I`ve mentioned this before but my head is very 'round' shape and in order to get any brim swoop, I need to turn my hats completely sideways. At first, this exaggerates the swoop but I spray it with a water bottle with cool water and just wear it and eventually the caricature swoop relaxes enough enough to look ala`natural. My only problem is the crown then needs to be reblocked in this sideways form in order to get the fullness of the crown in all the right places.....

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 093732.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The hat in the pics is my AB and I don`t mean to derail the topic but I added them as an example for the round vs. oval issue. Please bear with me.... I did the exact same thing with my PB back in the day when I had one and had the exact same results.

Yep! I do. That's why I always go for the LC brim and a somewhat Raiders crown.
