Re: The Official Peters Brothers Custom Indy fedora thread....
Styles:
Raiders: Tall un-tapered crown height with a distinct tight front pinch.
Temple : Shorter, slightly tapered crown with a relaxed front pinch.
Last Crusade: Medium height un-tapered crown with a pinch not quite as tight as Raiders. More roll on the sides and back makes the brim appear more narrow.
Indy 4: Cross between Raiders and Last Crusade. Crown height from Raiders, pinch from Last Crusade and the brim wider in the front and back.
Need help? Here's a guide.
Tall and have a thin face the regular Raiders.
Tall and round face Last Crusade with a taller crown.
Medium height and thin face Crusade with a Raiders pinch.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Apart from maybe different felt options, there's not much new there. They've customized Indy hats for years, and the "Michaelson" has been around longer than AB! In fact, Peters Bros. were one of the earlier offerings of Indy fedoras back before we had half of the offerings we do today, though it's nice seeing them get some current appreciation.

Is it just me, or, compared to the AB Henry, is the brim on a PB custom shorter in the front?

I mean comparing the pictures on their website compared to pictures of an AB Henry, but that is absolutely true.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
My PB actually has a lager brim on it than my Henry and Fed IV, but not by much. The front is 3 1/8th and the sides are 3, and the crown is a notch taller at 5 5/8 (a tall 5 5/8ths) the dimensions are a bit larger, and my guess is the guy i bought it from told them to build a raiders hat and they did what they thought was best. The hats more of an Indy cowboy, than an Indy fedora, but its tough as nails.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
I just ordered a custom PB Last Crusade with a 2 7/8 brim, front to back, and a 2 5/8 brim from side to side, slightly more brim, due to the slight brim curl of the Last Crusade style. It should be a medium crown, so I asked them to do a 4 1/4" bash. I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like.

It is great to see that PB has expanded their Indy line with the different felt offerings. I was a good customer of PB at one time. Used to talk Joe Jr. alot on the phone in those days. Wish he would join back up with hid Dad. A real nice amiable guy he was. Fedora

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Hi guys! Even though they are not more than 250 miles from me, I did not know much about them, but intrigued by the fact that they had been making hats for generations. That says alot. As you mentioned in another thread, it looks like they may be using a different block, so I'm curious to see the LC styled fedora that will hit my doorstep soon.
Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
I just recently received a Peters Bros. custom Raiders in the soft rabbit fur blend and I must say that it is my favorite hat. It is very soft and has just the right amount of stiffener in it to hold its shape. The durability is also there and I would highly recommend this fedora to anyone!

More and more, I'm beginning the think that my LC style will be a Peters Brothers. I really like the look of these hats and I like to try out different vendors. Can't wait to see your LC, Texan Scott!

Bump:
dusted off some old pictures (actually, found 'em on an old hard drive) and made a quick youtube video of my custom Temple of Doom Peter Bros Indy fedora:

The pics used are about a year old, but the hat still looks like that if not better.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
I received mine, but had to send it back for minor adjustments. It should be ready to post soon. For a LC styled hat, the color looks spot on, and the sweatband is heavy duty, appears to be cowhide. Very light weight felt.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Has anybody gotten a PB Custom Indy in all beaver with the CotCS bash? If so, how does it hold up?
I know I'll get *some* slack for this, but in previous PB hat discussions, I could never find an answer to my curiosity: Given Peter Bros' knack for making an extremely durable hat, how would a KotCS bashed Beaver Custom Indy compare to an AB durability wise? Style/appearance wise? *shot*
Not trying to imply anything, just want an honest and fair comparison.

I would also like to see some pics and review of the PB Custom Beaver, CS fedora. Post 'em up if you have it.
Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Here's my old PB fedora. Raiders '_' Style. I just love this hat more and more as time goes by. It used to be hard as nails, bulletproof hard, but over the years it has softened up and is now almost floppy. It has retained it's shape pretty well, and the colour has lightened somewhat.

Nice pics, Krede! Thanks for posting them. Be sure to double check the weight of the sandbag. We know what that leads to....

Hehe thanks! I really love that hat. Yeah, nothing good ever comes from trying to subtitute gold with a bag of sand.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Is it sad that last night while trying to go to sleep, my thoughts were....."I haven't heard about any PB fedoras in quite some time...." That was honestly one of my closing thoughts last night....
Hence, I went searching today.
Basically ever since the Akubra Fed, Penman and ABs came out PB has kinda slowly been forgotten. Or at least it felt that way.
Good to see some PBS still out there. With them being so close to me, I've always wanted to go by. Anyone have some pics of their LC PBs?
I can't look at photobucket at the library for some reason, but this weekend I can at my GFs house.....

So what would be better...a stiff rabbit blend, or soft rabbit blend?

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
Depends on what you like. Cowboy hat stiff... or soft and floppy? I don't know that much about Peters Bros, but I heard their stiff hats have been nicknames bulletproof because they're so stiff. I personally prefer soft hats.

For what exactly? A Raiders hat? Most people like a soft and floppy hat for a Raiders hat.

They offer all ranges now. Take look at their website.
http://www.pbhats.com/INDY_CUSTOM/Default.htm
I own one of their soft rabbit blend felts myself.
Their hats are now made from the same felter as purchased from and used by AB (U.S.), Fawcett, and Penman.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
I was going to go with a LC.
Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
I had contacted them about the possibility of a soft 50/50 blend instead of the bulletproof version but was told that they don't get that many orders for them so they don't stock the felt. In order to get it, I'd have to order 36 hats.

Re: Peters Brothers custom fedora thread....
You are correct They don't keep dress weight felt in a 50/50 blend. I special order my rabbit felt, so no one has my exact rabbit felt. my beaver felt like Steve are done with the least amount of stiffener and I'm not sure but most wouldn't even consider going that route.

How long ago was it that you asked that, crismans?crismans wrote:I had contacted them about the possibility of a soft 50/50 blend instead of the bulletproof version but was told that they don't get that many orders for them so they don't stock the felt. Gentlemen, please re-read what I said above. I said they used the same 'felter', not the same 'felt'. I have no idea what their blend is, though I SUSPECT it's 50/50. A soft 50/50 blend was brought up in past discussions with Joe back in 2008 when he upgraded his Indy custom line. That's why I asked 'when' you talked to them, crismans.
As I said, I OWN one of the soft rabbit blend felts. It's as soft as anything I've had come in the door from AB. I HAVE handled one of their 100% beaver hats, and it's exactly the same amount of stiffner as an AB to the feel.
I've never personally seen or handled any of your fine hats, John, and as from past practice, I will say nothing regarding a vendor's wares that I've never had personal experience with.

Michaelson,
I just reread you post and I know you said felter not felt but I wanted to do two things. Help out with any iformation I can and to make sure people understood that it was felter not felt. You know how some will assume same felter mean same felt. The stiffener thing with steve and mine is a recent thing.
I totally agree with your practice of not giving a opinion on a vender without seeing the product first hand.

Good point, my friend.
Yep, 'felter' and 'felt' mean two completely different things in the business. One makes the material, and the other word covers so much ground you have to get specific in the definition.
Thanks for helping clarifiy what I was trying to say.
HIGH regards! Michaelson
