What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave color
I have been thinking about this for a while.
we know the jacket is 'authentic' brown and we only see one or two scenes where you can see the jacket clearly in its original color. and in some scenes it looks almost black. but lately I have started to see the color that I think is most seen actually. Greyish. and I so dig the look and color.
I mean, when Indy just whiped himself over the gap.
Just when he comes out from the WOS.
With Marion behind the barrels.
German mechanic fight,
when he climbs up on the plane to resque marion.
on the grill.
truck drag.
behind the wheel of the truck.
and more....
this color is what I'm talking about. westeds current ''washed'' goat is almost identical to this color. alittle bit of distressing and you have the ''Marion'' jacket. hmm? maby I will swap my LC order to another raiders in the greyish washed goat?
what do you think? what is your favorite color?

Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
That greyish color is due to the accumulated dust and dirt on the jacket. (as well as the lighting to some degree).
I still think the true (and best) color of the Indy leather is brown. To me, a grey Indy jacket just doesn't look right.

I like a dark brown...chocolate with reddish undertones....like what Wested's copper novapelle is supposed to look like...although I've not seen it in person...

I have a Wested Novapelle jacket....it's awesome and to me, the best leather Wested has ever made!Indydawg wrote:I like a dark brown...chocolate with reddish undertones....like what Wested's copper novapelle is supposed to look like...although I've not seen it in person...

Is it the copper color or the more chocolate brown undertones?

well, I know that but it gives a greyish color that is kinda cool and the washed goat looks to be the same color.
dont you got a washed goat? is it more or less this color or little more brown? I have a sample and its identical to the pic above, but then I see another persons washed goat and it looks different.

I used to have one of the early goatskin Westeds...it had greyish undertones...and no...I didn't like it very much.
Just a personal preference for me...but I've always been after that reddish brown undertone that the first Wested I had presented....the one I buggered up the collar on and have tried, for YEARS, to reproduce.
My "Last Crusade" jacket, Holt....if I can ever reproduce it...I will be finished...
The circle will be complete.

yep, I know about the old goatskin batches and it was grey underneath, I hated it myself.
but this new washed goat sample I have is different. at least on my sample it shows a grey tone like the one in the picture with a brown underbelly. its pretty cool. very cool for raiders, very wrong for LC.
I look forward to your LC jacket project when its done.

Thanks for those my friend. prooves a good point.
I and we all know the raiders jacket original was brown. To me the ultimate raiders jacket color is in the well of souls scenes etc. that really dark jacket..
I just lately started to really take a liking towards that color on the jacket in the ''Marion'' scene and all other scenes where the jacket looks more greyish with brown underbelly. it's pretty cool I think. but of course the color I love is DARK.

like this.
same jacket as in the well of souls but in daylight and covered in dust.
it doesn't look brown or blackish anymore but has becpme more grey in color due the dust and daylight. etc. I really like the color, looks really beat up.

i have always agreed that the darker brown is more representative to what is seen on screen. my wested that i've had since 2005 is their dark brown lamb and to the naked eye is what you see in the w.o.s and raven bar and even in the opening temple scenes. i just wish mine fit better and had more s.a details to it. the flying wing and truck chase look have always been my fav.

this color. pretty cool IMO
Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
On the big screen the jacket looks brown. On TV screens over the decades it has always looked like a faded black or charcoal - expecially the ToD version. I'm with you Holt, I always thought get one in a dusty faded black/grey. I actually prefer this to brown.

Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
I think "gray" means something different to a lot of people, Holt. But going beyond the word, I think I know exactly the quality you're talking about. It's basically brown, but with that bold brown sheen taken off, the overall color subdued. Washed skins have that look, much like my washed Magnoli lambskin. I love it because it looks so much more like what I see in my favorite Raiders scenes than any "authentic brown." For me, it's not about what the jacket looked like in person. It's what we see on the screen that gets me excited. I DO like the almost black look from the WoS and the Chach Temple, but I find that my washed lambskin looks very black in low light. So I get the best of both worlds!
Keeping in mind that the hide and color are not the same as a Wested goatskin to start with, here is a color comp of my Mag washed (left) and my old Authentic brown Wested (right)... and an AB.
and a full gear shot (man, I've gained weight since then);
Am I getting your point, Holt?

I think a good rule of thumb for Raiders is the jacket should match the hat ribbon; very dark. I like the Nowak goat I have for that reason. It has a matt finish and the dark color I wanted. I'm absolutely with you, Chewie... I'm into what I see on screen, not what it actually was in real life.

I work in post-production for films and broadcast as an editor. It could be pointed out that sometimes, the colors on-set can be different from the final results on-screen due to the color grading process. I had a few times changed the way a costume look onscreen through color grading. So perhaps the jacket maybe brown but after all the process of film-making, it truns out to be what you see on-screen.Tundrarider wrote:Hi Eric!!!
Please forgive me for throwing this out there, but in answer to your first question, "What jacket color do we really see?"
We see what Spielberg shows us.
As you said, the jacket looks almost black in many places, but I think that has more to do with the distressing, dirt, lighting, filming and editing than the actual color of the jacket.
When I was putting together my Strider outfit several years ago, I intially was selecting garments and leather which were various shades of black, as his gear appears in the film.
Later, I saw some pics of the screen used gear (as pictured below) and saw how colorful his outfit really was. Apparently, Peter Jackson didn't want Strider's duster so green, nor the rest of his stuff so colorful. He went head to head with the Costume Designer and she was adamant that the outfit colors were correct. Peter Jackson then said to himself, that's fine...I'll fix it in the editing room!
Which he did, and if you watch the movie, his outfit appears very dark and basically different shades of black.
So in my opinion, the Raiders jacket was very dark brown to begin with and it took on many different looks due to "film magic."
My fave? For a Raiders, I like what you described and pictured.
Michael
Frankly I think I like the darker colors more

Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
Really enjoying this Thread, everybody... thanks for getting it started, Holt.
I remember when I got my Wested (in Authentic Brown Lambskin) and was -at first - surprised at first at how very BROWN it looked (to my eyes, anyway)... simply because I thought I was getting a jacket that would instantly look just like the color of the jacket I was seeing on screen.
I quickly realized that time & experience were the missing ingredients and knew the jacket would gain more & more character the more I wore it... before long, I saw how regular wear & tear and rain & sun could help to dull, darken & fade a jacket's color...
After a year or so my jacket had already begun to display it's own character, but was still what you'd call a Dark Brown color... so, for fun I decided to give it a light application of Fuller's Earth and was amused to see just how much more "gray/grey" the jacket looked after such a light dusting. The Fuller's just made the graeyishness leap out (I realize that the lighting for each of these two separate photos also play a part, but I was also seeing it with the naked eye, too)
Of course, there's a dozen things that contribute to the confusing maelstrom (and for some: debate) of "what we see on screen/what is real/what's been adjusted/what's a trick of the light/what we prefer to think/etc,etc,etc"...
but I was genuinely surprised and thrilled by how immediately the Fuller's made my jacket take on the appearance of another color... it was pretty cool.
Anyway, just wanted to share that... not sure that I'm contributing much to this discussion, but I'm sure enjoying the "read"
Cheers,
Mitch

Right on, Mitch....That`s exactly what I see in all my jackets and hats....one color and it changes in different lighting and conditions....sometimes, my wife thinks I`m wearing a new or different jacket and then as soon as we step outside, she sees that its the same. I`m use to it so I don`t pay attention anymore.

The other interesting thing here is that the ability of these jackets to DO this is also probably a pretty useful "illusion" to use to one's advantage, Gorak:
No matter how many different jackets some of our Members have, they can still get away with telling their wives and girlfriends "No, honey... this is the same jacket, it just LOOKS a little bit different in this kinda' lighting"

Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
I REALLY love the ambiguous nature of the color of the Raiders Jacket. If I had to pick my favorite, it would be that buttery, almost Nutella'ey kind of tannish-brown that presents on the jacket when Indy and Satipo are at the Temple entrance...That's when my eyes just jump out of my skull over the richness of that color!
I think the tanning process went a long way to REALLY react to the lighting conditions of the various sets. I look at my Wested Lambskin Raiders jackets and from one moment to the next they never seem to be the same color twice.
I guess I prefer the natural color of the jacket as opposed to the grayish tone the jacket takes on when layered with dust. But it's an adventurers jacket, so apart from being splattered with paint, I'll take my Raiders jacket any which way but loose!

Re: What jacket color do we see really, and whas'your fave c
I've got a "Last Crusade" from Wested in dark brown Lambskin, and it's almost spot on for the Raiders colour (although perhaps a touch too dark for LC?)...What I love about it is that in my house it's almost black..Very dark brown, unless hit by light, and then outside since it's rather new it looks a touch brighter and attracts a lot of attention...
That and the leather smell make it one of the best purchases ever...
I'm also aware that as was written above, the more I wear it in, the darker and more distressed it'll get, so it just gets better....
Great buy for me..I have to say..
