My short review on a Todd's standard xxl. ****PICS****
Hi.
well it finally happend. I got a Todd's standard xxl A
what can I say other then that I really dig it. I have never had a better fitting of the rack jacket while still being baggy enuff to get that raiders wibe.
the Leather is thicker then I thought it would be. it is about 15 percent thinner then a rola special. the drape is amazing and is Raiders all the way, and so is the drape on the special rola from wested. they are pretty much the same in weight. but the todd standard has the exact same grain and stretch marks you see in the original raiders jacket, which is a very good thing it only is in lack of the ''ribb'' marks on the chest panels. the drape and ''fake'' color on my jacket is almost (if not) identical to this.
one thing that I would have changed is the right side of the collar not meeting all the way to the zipper. the collar stops about .25'' before the zipper. but it aint that big of a deal.
the collar tips is IMO alittle too pointy.
and the side pockets not cut deep into the jacket linning. I really missed that on this one. the cargo pockets are sewn on top of the jacket front panels. this way I cant use the handwarmers since they dont give me any warmth and that really takes away the whole idea of them being ''handwarmes''. but its a 150 dollar jacket so how much work can one expect on a that low price jacket. the details on this wonderfull jacket kinda makes up for them not being there correctly. maby they go in the lining on a custom made jacket?
other then that it is really a very good jacket and I really dig it. I love the lining. feels bullet proof.
now take it from me, the cut of the jacket is very close to what you see on screen and the details are very, very well done. I DIG the ''K'' stitch on the straps and the high yoke. I cant see one flaw in details other then the right collarstand not meeting the zipper and the collar tips. I can tell that Todd really has put his heart and mind into making this.
and, the color for this jacket really is the best color I have seen if you want the ''fake'' color seen on screen.
all in all I am very happy.
thanx again Frank for this wonderfull deal. and yes I had it on during my Taekwondo seminar and when we went out on the town on saturday evening after all the training
pictures will come.

Thanks for the review Holt. That's one of the older jackets, a good thing imo. Both the XL's and XXL's fit me very well.

Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
I thought Todd corrected this. I was under the impression that the newer standard off the rack jackets had hand-warmers cut into the body of the jacket. Holt, is that an older jacket (hence the "A")?the cargo pockets are sewn on top of the jacket front panels. this way I cant use the handwarmers since they dont give me any warmth and that really takes away the whole idea of them being ''handwarmes''.
Also, what exactly are you referring to when you say "fake" color of the movie jacket?
Thanks.

Did the hand warmer pockets go into the lining on the Raiders film jacket?

Not a bad review Holt. Todd has done a nice job on these standards, but I think there have been improvements since that one.
As far as I know, his custom does have hand-warmers cut into the jacket, not just a patch on front, and the newer standards may as well.

Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
The older standard pockets are sewn on top of the shell. The newer standards have them "cut-in". The newer ones have some drawbacks, in my opinion though. Like the back arm seams being in line with the bottom yoke seam, and double-rounded collar stands.

Yep, quality product, especially for the price, looking forward to the action shots.

Yes, let's see some pics Holt - thinking about getting one of these myself
Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
the jackets were authentic brown but under the stage lights the color came out much darker and almost black. and thats ''the fake color'' the illusionForrest For the Trees wrote:

Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
thats great, then forget about my review on the pockets. I wrote the small review on the pockets because Todd said that the new jackets are 100% the same as the old one in details. they only changed the fit. but if they changed it then that is great.RCSignals wrote:Not a bad review Holt. Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
I do think the Raiders jacket must have been a darker brown than ToD & LC, otherwise they would have suffered from the same "fake" effect of looking darker on screen. We're talking pre-digital colour grading, and they would have likely used the same film stocks. I'm just wondering what you are relying on to tell you that this ISN'T the right colour / something else IS. eg. If so many things about Wested's jackets have been incorrect, why would their "authentic" colour be any different?

Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
I think what Holt means is that Wested's Authentic Brown IS the correct color, but under the studio lights, the jacket appears much darker on film. Therefore, when we get an Authentic Brown jacket from Wested, it is lighter than we are expecting, even though it is the same color as the actual leather jacket worn in Raiders.
Or something like that.

Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl.
In dealing with the distressing issue, I think that the jacket gets darker and appears black after the jacket is soaked and dries. This distressing method seems to create that effect. Also, one reason for the darker appearance may be that the lamb hide that was sourced was from a different supplier than it is today. Just look at the dark brown English lamb hide that was standard, per these jackets even a few years ago, as opposed to the lamb and dye that is used today on "authentic brown lamb." The older, dark brown English lamb had a very distictive smell.

Just great! The funny thing with Todd's is that they always look much thicker than they are - not that I think they're too thin. Just right for the jungle really. It looks perfect on you Holt.

so not too far off your size holt... and that jacket looks like it fits perfectly. What is the back length of that jacket? Does anyone know if the new XL is longer or shorter than that one?
Thanks all! great resource you have here!
Re: My short review on a Todd's standard xxl. ****PICS****
Very nice Holt, and it looks good on you. I've been meaning to pick up a Todd's Standard for a while now (I've had a couple of customs). Your jacket may be what puts me over.

this jacket is the old style standards.Toht wrote: What is the back length of that jacket? Does anyone know if the new XL is longer or shorter than that one?
its around 25'' so its short, but not to short for the original back length, which was 23'' or so. and harry is around 6.1' 6.2'.

Thanx Todd.
I couldnt agree more on the leather weigth and feel. I allways thought Todd standards were thinner then what they really are. the drape is wonderfull and so is the color and of course the fit is A-OK.

I think it's amazing (and quite fortunate) that one of the better SA jackets is also one, if not the, least expensive. Todd has done an outstanding job here.

I clicked on the wrong button and got this thread by mistake, and when I saw the photos, I assumed it was a much more expensive jacket. It IS amazing and, like the label says, "lucky"-- not only for Todd, but for those who either can't afford or are simply not inclined to spend more on an accurate Indy jacket.

here is the back of the jacket. I realized I totally forgot to show the back.
EDIT
see the grain by the pleats and bottom of the panel. its exactly like the original.

If you haven't heard that straight from Todd, don't believe it. Todd tells me a lot of stuff, although certainly not everything, but I've NEVER heard that from him, nothing about design changes and nothing about a new shipment coming in (although I don't think he'd mind me saying that there is a shipment of 55 and 56 Downtowner's arriving).Satipo wrote:I really want one of these. Not to completely hijack Holt's thread (sorry Holt), but I went by Todd's shop yesterday and let him talk me into a standard, tried on a few to get one that felt loose enough to wear some thicker clothes under, but that still looked fitted enough to be a true raiders jacket, and all i can say is:
I LOVE IT!
So far it's the Raider's jacket I always wanted (my other is that 10 year old custom Wested Goat.
IMO, the jacket was never meant to be more than a windbreaker anyway, or else it would be hard to run a 440 in the freakin' amazon from a tribe a nearly naked (becausee it's hot and humid in jungles) natives without passing out, or wear in the desert when everyone else seems to be in warm weather gear.
And that's exactly what Todd's standard is. It's thin enough to wear on warmer days, but cuts the chill on cooler days if you zip it up and can be worn over, oh i don't know, a cardigan... and still do the job and allow a person to move their arms. Today I've worn it all day, from the moutains where it was freezing this morning with a sweater underneath, to a valley where it was in the 60's and ditched the sweater, and tonight I'm at the ocean (gotta love southern california where the winter time ocean breeze was nothing once I zipped it up with just a long sleeve button up.
i also bought 2 pairs of gloves, a headpiece as a christmas present for myself, and another knife (also saw the new TOD machete and it's HUGE! So massively intimidating that I would run too!!! ...and that's if even only 1 thugee had one)

The only thing that has been said here that I'm aware of is sizing changes were made for the latest standards and some small tweaks. It was also said the hand warmer pockets are now cut in.
I don't recall anything mentioned about the collar, and don't know why it would be changed.

Mine has the cut in hand warmer pockets and fits great (although I thought to soak it and throw it on over a sweater so it really forms...but i probably shouldn't, because even though other guys around here make all the prop making, hat shaping, leather tweaking stuff look easy...it ain't.

Admittedly not from the horse's mouth, but I got the impression there was going to be a new, corrected batch from the following quote found in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44091&p=637647&hili ... rd#p637647RaidersBash wrote:If you haven't heard that straight from Todd, don't believe it. I think once that happens and and production is thoroughly sorted out you won't find a better more accurate ROLA in the sub $400 range.
You're right, the collar wasn't specifically mentioned. I must have read too much between the lines and assumed it would be addressed because it's a prominent detail a few have picked up on, including Holt:RCSignals wrote:I don't recall anything mentioned about the collar, and don't know why it would be changed.

Someone has mentioned that the sleeve seam now meets the yoke seam instead of 1 inch below it on the new jackets. Is this the case or is the seam still one inch below?RaidersBash wrote:

Nothing against the original poster but I have wondered why the pattern would become less SA. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
