Penmans hat tutorial(s)/videos 2/25/2010
Ok, Guys and Dolls. get your popcorn ready to watch a couple of you tubes. just shows how a Penman beaver felt hat can be soft if you just wear it and break it in a little.
My hats are Bulldog tuff as you will see but do this to you own hat at you own risk.

Those are great video !!!
I really like the second one, I can't wait to get my own Penman hat !!!!!
And I hope you will post more video in the future.

GREAT vids, Oak!
I have to laugh at the idea of how many hearts will skip on the second one; very dramatic. It's nice to see the creasing tutorial in motion, and on such a fine looking hat, to boot. The first vid was A LONG TIME COMING and I motion it be stickied, at least for a little while. Good job, great looking hats!

I agree this should be a sticky-or a link in the Fedora FAQ thread.

Great videos! The picture tutorials are nice, but there's something about seeing it actually done which works better, IMO.

Nice buddy,
I like the smash and the stomp.... your hats are sweet...and when you bashed that raiders it actually looked like you were molding clay. I cant believe you didnt need any steam.
Very Nice....very durable.

Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
great video John. I really love your hats!
Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
Great videos! And I think for many here they are very very helpful.
By the way I really love the second one, in a certain way it is quite funny how you suddenly smash the hat.
Thank you John!

Pretty good! A long set-up was followed by a rather abrupt ending.

Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
Great videos, BendingOak! Particularly the first one, although I agree with Texan Scott about the ending - I think you should dwell longer on the finished product for maximum effect. Perhaps you could tack on an extra clip which showcases the resulting hat from all angles.

Every time I watch the tutorial John I can't help but think of Bob Ross. "Let's get some white on our brush and we'll bash some happy trees, juuuust like clay" Nice work John!

Great videos John. The first one I think is the best one on the subject. The second is good to demonstrate a fine hat is thougher than many think. And a Penman certainly is a fine hat.

Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
I popped some corn, took my favorite seat and then...all for a man stomping his hat! That must be my new Henry. What we needed to see was the 'protagonist' in the throws of finishing his hat (the third act)...now we need some conflict...a villian. The evil hatter walks by and yells through the open window that he is going to ruin BendingOak and become the best hatter in the northwest. At that moment, Little Oak bursts through the door of his father's shop and like greased lightening, he reaches for that strip o' leather that deals death with lightening efficiency, and in one fluid motion, sends the villian reeling, scampering down the street. You could tell by the way he walked he meant trouble. Oak runs outside, throws down his hat, stomps on it, and yells.....if you EVER come back here again, you'll be sorry! End of the fourth act.

Great videos! But I've got a question. You dry bashed your hat in the first video correct? Well, when I get my Fed IV, can I dry bash it? Someone else on the forum dry bashed theirs and it developed a hole becuase they dry bashed it. So, was that a fluke or will that happen every time? Can I dry bash my Fed IV?
Again, great video!

You should be able to dry bash the fed with very little problem. It might have been a fluke like you said. I would suggest to dry bash your hat and keep working on the bash to hold the shape or settle into what you want. It will try and pop out but if you keep working on it for a week or two it should settle. Ounce it's in real well stop handling the crown. Most likely they handle the from pinch at the top every day for some time.

Yes, someone PLEASE archive the videos....especially the first one. That is probably one of the best Raiders hat bashing tutorial videos I've ever seen. Everything it taken step by step and done slowly so people can actually see everything done clearly.
Waaaay back when I bought my Akubra Fed Deluxe 3 I did do some of what's shown in the video but I nearly had to turn the hat sideways on my head to get the brim to "warp" and I could never get the crown to go down farther in the back because then the front would taper badly.
I take it the block the hat was made on factors into how easy your hat can be bashed "Raiders style", correct?

Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
you are correct. The block shape that the my Raiders block is made on makes it easy to not only bash the hat but to get the drop in the back. You can use this to bash any hat but you will tweak as you go.Pitfall Harry wrote:Yes, someone PLEASE archive the videos....especially the first one. I did this to help people on how to bash a hat and to show even my beaver felt can be flopy.
I didn't do the 2nd tube to say you should treat you hat this way but to show if I can crush, stomp and slap the hat this way it should hold up to any daily wear.

Re: Get your popcorn ready........................
John, both are fantastic videos. The first one is probably the best Raiders how-to I've seen. Plus, it should help those who fear open crown hats to feel less doubtful. Have you done a non-Indy version of the video that you post over at the Fedora Lounge? Maybe doing the Marlo?
May be so bold to suggest this be a sticky thread in either the Fedora or Care & Distressing section?

Thanks my friend and thank you to everyone else for their kind words. I'm going to be doing different ''how to" tubes.
I will do one for every Indy style.
I will do one for a few non Indy hats
I will do how to take your head measurements
I will do one showing how to use my hat jack.
Stay tuned

Re: BendingOaks's hat bashing tutorial(s)/videos
I also added your bashing tutorial to the stickied FAQ thread at the top of the fedora section: http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f ... 81#p135981
That way, it will be easy to find and you won't have to dig through a ton of posts to find it. I can add the other "how to's" to the FAQ as necessary.

Brillant and a great demo for " Bulldog tuff". I love how you get the top crease of the hat. Wish I 'd seen this before I bashed my Henry

Thank you very much John!
I will be getting my first AB in a few weeks and was a little trepid on how I was going to bash it. Very helpful.

Sorry to go Off Topic for a second, but Michael your new avatar is great!
Love it.
Also... As Michael said: Welcome TreacleMiner!
Now, to get back ON Topic:
I'm curious, too... will the hat you get from Mr. Penman be an AB or AB Henry? Please let us know (you'll find that most of us here sustain ourselves on a fairly steady diet of little tidbits of info like this.)
Love it.

I just had a feeling after the first few of the Hat Jacks are sold that people might need to know how they work. It was only logical to make a how to do on you tube. There will be more video's made.

LOVE the hat jack John! Its such a simple concept its amazing noone has thought of it before. Had they thought of it though, it would not have been as beautiful as the one you made...probably just be cheap plastic.
