General message about costs to all new members.

Post by maboot38 »

I thought it might be interesting to give new members or members who are planning on putting together an Indy costume or getting into the Indy hobby a basic idea of the cost involved in putting a reasonably accurate costume together.

Lets use this list as an example. These are the costs incurred by a guy I know :)

Fed IV Fedora (Used) - $70
Noel Howard Belt and Whip Holder - $100
Webley Green Holster - $85
Magnoli Officer's Tie - $30
Purewhips Indy Whip - $186.50
Todd's Adjustable Whip Holder - $20
Todd's Bag and strap - $39
Todd's Distressed Gloves - $30
Wested Indy Shirt - $80
Wested Indy Trousers - $126
Wested Authentic Lamb - $230
Pecard - $23.75
Web Belt - $5
Alden 405s - $340

--------
Total - $1365.25

In addition, there are several items bought which have been upgraded and are no longer considered part of the costume.

Todd's Weapons Belt - $30 (Excellent belt, but NH belt preferred)
JRZJoe Bullwhip - $162.50 (Don't make this mistake)
WWII Officer Pinks - $85 (Pockets and pleats missing)
Dorfman Pacific "Official" Wool-Felt Fedora - $48 (DEFINITELY don't make this mistake!)

--------
Total - $325.50

That makes the total spent for the costume $1690.75.

In addition, this guy has a small collection of Indy props:

Webley Resin Replica - $145
Voodoo Pin - $135
Headpiece Chain - $44
Staff Headpiece - $115
Lao Che's Eye of Peacock Diamond - $50
Lao Che Coin Purse - $20
Sanskrit Cloth - $38.50
Raiders Sandbag - $67
Crystal Skull Replica Gold coins - $24
Grail Tablet - $227
Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword Pin - $20
Various Mutt Williams jacket lapel pins - $37
Holy Grail (clay) - $160
Blank Diary - $60
Nurhachi Urn - $88
Antidote Vial - $45

--------
Total - $1275.50

For a grand total of:
$2926.25

If this guy's wife saw this post, and knew that it was about him, she'd probably have an absolute fit, so please, kids....ask your parents permission before dialing. Buyer beware! In other words, get out now while you still can!!!!

These costs are modest. It can quite easily get out of hand. There is another user on here who has over 12 INDY JACKETS ALONE!!!!! Run away!!!! If you have money to burn, feed the homeless, donate to the Boy Scouts, or put your child through college.

If you haven't yet been disuaded by this post....there is no hope for you. Welcome to the Land of the Lost (Lost money that is!). We look forward to discussing all things Indy with you :)

Come for the gear, Stay for the people.

...of course, a lot of the top end gear shows up every day in the classified section at half those prices too, so you can STILL get in the game for little money. Don't be scared away. The numbers are a constantly changing 'fact'.

There's always Hovito's gear too...... :-k :anxious:

Okay, I'll play this game with ya.

Now, I'm European so my gear is likely to be different than, say American. If your country is a member of the European Union, it usually comes with certain benefits; stuff like shipping, value added taxes ect.
Be sure to check with your post office or something before ordering any gear.

On a more personal level, my gear is pretty pricey, as I went for some Screen Accurate stuff, - and a few of the items will be brought in from outside the EU. It is possible to find cheaper alternatives, but I live by the code of "buy quality and cry only once"

Anyway, here's my personal list: (you're gonna have to convert the prices yourself, it's late as I'm writing this)

Hat
Adventurebilt Deluxe
€399

Jacket
Wested ROTLA Custom
£160

Shirt
Adventurebilt
((contact Adventurebilt for more info)I bought a used one from one of the members here)
I think it's about $100 (could someone correct me if I'm wrong?)

Holster
Adventurebilt
About $110 I think - I'm not sure (predistressed)

Gunbelt
Wade Egan Gear
$65

Web Belt
Wade Egan Gear
$7

Bagstrap(buckle included) - Wade Egan Gear
$55 (deluxe version)

Bag
Mangoli Clothiers
$36

Pants
Wested
£49

Shoes
Adventurebilt Aldens
€450

Whip
Giovanni Celeste
€340

Gun
Tanaka m10 Police and Military 4-inch gun from redwolfairsoft
$129

This comes up every once in a while. I'll go through mine. :)

Hat(s) - Adventurebilt Rabbit - 100$
Adventurebilt Beaver - 225$
Jacket - Wested custom Raiders authentic lamb - 310$ US
Pants - Wested - 80$ US
Shirt - Wested - 65$ US
Boots - Red Wing model 875 work boots - 225$
Whip - Adam Winrich 8' IOAB - 100$
Gun prop - Artsee1 resin replica - 100$
Gunbelt - Todd's Costumes - 30$
Web belt - Todd's - 5$
Holster - Todd's - 30$
Whip holder - Mola Ram's non-slip - (don't remember ... less than 20$)
Gloves - random Home Depot purchase - 5$

TOTAL: 1,295.00$, but this doesn't include shipping. That's my current gear. I've spent more than that, but I can't remember everything I've bought and sold, so we'll just keep it at what I currently have.

Let's see, without going through the dollar amount, here goes! The following items were purchased between May and December last year.

Penman Hat
Wested Jacket
4 different maker shirts
2 different maker pants
new Aldens

2 web belts,
a Noel howard tie
a Joe Strain whip
Webley holster
materials for self-made belt, holsters, whip holder and bag straps
3 MK V bags
a KOCTS backpack,
Grail diary
a gold resin Idol,
Artsee S&W
Todd's Pocketknife
Todd's gloves
a few Indy books
several Indy toys
self-made sandbag
KOCTS style flashlight found in the house - free!

a copy of KOCTS on DVD with original shrink wrap - PRICELESS!

I'm taking a break from collecting for a number of reasons, but I still enjoy following what's going on.

This is a relatively cheap hobby by comparison. I have friends who spend literally tens of thousands every year on golf accessories. My next door neighbor spends over $200K every year collecting vintage Porsches!

Over the past year, I think I spent close to $4K just on jackets alone.

Not sure the comparison is that great, PSB. Spending money on golf happens because you can't play golf unless you do, and it is a real world activity that can be done all over the world, and is a game which touches on our competitive nature and whatnot.

Porche collecting, well, that's for people without mortgages. :) A different animal alltogether.

As for Indygear, each of us, at some point in our lives, decided we wanted to dress up like a guy in a movie, and ended up spending thousands of dollars to do so!!!!

If you smoke... quit that and you can buy all sorts of gear :D

The IndyGear hobby is like any other collecting. Don't ask Star Wars people what they have spent, or heck, my variety of prop replicas and costume items, I don't even want to think about it. But you could spend money on worse things.

For kicks, let's do some quick math to see approx what an Indy setup would run, using Raiders as a basis.

With Todd's costumes, this hobby is way more affordable. I am not going to put brands, just real general price estimates. Raiders style here.

Fedora - $150
Jacket - $300
Bag - $50
Belt - $10
Gunbelt with whip holder - $80
Holster - $70
Shirt - $65
Pants - $70
Boots - $ 100
Whip - $200

Total - $1095

You may be able to go a little cheaper and if you wanted specific name brand items, you could go a lot higher.

I don't think he's saying everything was Todd's, just that Todd's helps keep the cost of the costume down.

Also, his standard is 150, but not his custom.

Yea, those aren't Todd quotes, just some rough numbers on what you could do with averages. You could go cheaper depending on what you bought or you could go way more expensive.

Not ALL of us, my friend. Some of us were already wearing fedoras and leather jackets LONG before Indy was ever seen on film. We just refined our items as the better stuff came along, but that was the 'uniform' of the working man in the mid-west (steelmill and railroad workers) long before Indy was even a flash of an idea in Lucas' head, and some of us just carried our fathers and fathers-father's practice forward into our habit of daily dress.... ;)

Anyway....

My dad used a surplus MkVII when he went fishing, and carried it to work at the local truck/tractor factory. Yet another nail in the "man-bag" coffin! :D In post-war Britain they were quite commonly used by working class men to carry their lunches in! Nobody raised (or raises) an eyebrow about them in my experience.

I was lucky enough to inherit my dad's just after TOD came out. It was pretty grimy and SA by that time (oily hands had given it a very nice patina). The strap was close enough from a distance. A piece of black nylon webbing cold-rivetted directly onto the bag. No need to worry about the strap attachments. Unfortunately it's now gone the way of the dodo... Sorry, I'm getting a little misty eyed and off topic now!

It was ok, he only used it for keeping bait, hooks, fishing line etc. in - not the fish! :) Well, as far as I know anyway!

It did smell of old engine oil from the factory he worked in. I kinda liked that though!

Yup, but it does include shipping and the infamous Dutch import-tax and customs fee ;)

Basically, when customs is through with your stuff it costs more in Euro's than it did in Dollars :x  Something that costs $300 could easily cost 320 Euro or slightly more  :x

Man, was I glad they didn't catch me on my Nowak :D

All right, I should have said standard $150 and custom $500 like I originally was going to post. $300 would be for a wested.

you know i forgot to mention something, I'm in the great white north, and most of my gear was bought last year when the Canadian dollar was higher than the American. Now our dollar has been as low as .60 to the dollar, right now i think it's about .92 (last checked) imagine me trying to buy this stuff at a different time.

Oh man... I better don't even THINK of all the thousands of Dollars I spent on gear that I don't even use and / or have any longer.

This is what I currently have:

AB-Dlx. (one brown one grey)
Vintage AB - made by Steve using a rawbody from 1927
Three Westeds
One Todd jacket
Three AB shirts
Two vintage MKVII bags
Two dead stock NH bag straps with
AB buckle
AB gunholster - pre-distressed
Fire cap HE2 replica, fully rebuilt by Kim
Deadstock NH Raiders gunbelt
2 Pagey whips (one 8' and one 10')
1 whip from Skip (8' latigo hide)
NH webbing belt
Modified / Tailored Eastman officer pinks
Two pair AB Alden boots
One pair reg. Alden boots
Plus a bag full of deadstock NH stuff (LC holsters, gunbelts, shirts etc. etc.)

Props:
Bibel pages
MKII Idol
Sankara stone
Shiva cloth
Grail diary
Several inserts for it
Screen used blank shells from CS - No, not for sale

That is approx. somewhere between 6-7000 Euro or 8.5-10,000$ for what I have right now. Not incl. all the stuff I bought during the last 19 years, but which I don't have anymore and / or stored away.

Regards,

Marc

One golden idol money bank £16 that I adapted myself.
All other gear: near enough second hand stuff I adapted myself. Estimate £ 60
All other props: made them myself. Estimate £50

Ha! The next time my wife asks why anyone would want more than one jacket when "they are all just the same", I'll point her to this thread! :)

Heh, you may be right. Of course, the good thing about the jackets all looking "the same" is that she can't tell them apart either. "Is that a new jacket, hon?" "No, silly, that's the old one I bought two years ago, remember?" :- :[

This game is horrifying. :Dietrich:

Thinking in totals = never buying anything again.

Not counting the AB, my total is under $1000... Geeze, I feel kind of sick.

Grand Total Thus far = Approx. $3700.

Oh yeah, add $425 for day of whip training with Anthony DeLongis

So, . . . $4,000 plus!

Not to mention,

I just today send $600 to Bernardo for SA Raiders whip,

Tomorrow I'm writing a check for $300 to John Penman for a Seaplane Gray Raiders Hat.

AND I'm waiting on Terry Jacka to confirm it's my turn to spend $600 or so on a KOTCS 10' whip,

And I'm considering getting a Nowak 747 Raiders jacket: $750.

So, what is that? Another $2300?

You know, you could save a few bucks by purchasing Todds shirt and Webley holster plus his jacket, which people say a great Raiders style. In addition he has new gloves which are $11. And don't forget his boots, now that he has worked out the 'bugs'.

If you did your total would be

$916.25

True, but when I bought my gear, Todd didn't have jackets, or Webley holsters, or boots. :( No regrets though, I love my Wested, Aldens, and Webley holster too much to part with them anyway.
