I'm inclined to think it's a Magnoli HJ. If not, then a Christy that's been modified by one of the AB boys. In any event, that crown is some bashing job.

i was gonna guess AB (steve) but i can't get a clear look at it and from what i see......doesn't look like an AB bow.

if it is an AB henry.......is that from the original run? the original run to me looked like the hat had a block that couldn't support a deep center crease like that. arggghhhh.....so hard to tell from pics.

I'm going to say LLS too. The way it bulges screams rabbit, the bow is too black to be an AB, and the low back suggests the new raiders blockshape.

I have to disagree. Granted, I'm just guessing, but the flying v seems too puffy to be a henry bow. in addition, it's kinda difficult a beaver blend could bulge that way

The way I'm think and this is now after seeing the latest 2 pics.

It's a rabbit felt machine/factory made hat. i say this because of the bulging of the felt and that i think I see the stitching of the sweatband because the ribbon is pulling up. The ribbon looks black to me but pics can lie about color. that and the dirt makes thing even harder.

At first I want to say the Henry because of the bow work. It has a very raiders look to it. Most people can't get the Raiders bow that good. There are on a few. Marc got the factory people to do a great job of doing the Raiders bow and I would assume there is more than one person doing the bow work at the factory. That could be why it looks slightly different than the Henry I have. Then the oval all shape makes me think it's not because it doesn't look like the Henry block.

the block looks closer to LLS or Steves block than it does to the henry block.,but there is a part in the back that just doesn't look right. The crease job is great who ever it is. the front and sides look good but the center crease when viewed from the back is not wide enough to be LLS or Steve's new block. besides I would think both Steve and David would sew their sweatbands by hand. That leaves both those guy's out

I would like to say the keppler /beaver brand but the stitching is all wrong for that.

Could be a mag/HJ blocked by Steve but he would have to have left the factory stitching.

I'm going to say someone new.

The bow work is indeed quite nice and SA - congrats are in order to someone. I don't think the Henry would bulge like that, unless the ribbon was re-attached VERY snug. No way is it a Keppler. Regardless, the sweat was definitely sewed by machine. C'mon, Oak chimed in, what is it!?

I have no idea who it is, but that last shot in the first post looks so spot on streets of Cairo, maybe the best I've seen.

I'll guess LLS, other wild guesses would be a jpd, a magnoli HJ, a secret offering by Indiana G, or those Spanish speaking guys' hat.

The only thing I did to it, aside from bashing, is shortening the brim 1/4" on the sides and 1/8" on the front.
The bulging is because I experimented with an elastic band and some cold water, just under the top of the ribbon. I did this because of the taper issues the Henry has in the back. I couldn't get that stovepipe look.The ribbon is all standard and so is the Flying V.

smart idea. this could solve my problem with the back taper.

BTW, your bow looks much better than mine: so nice and puffy. my flying v is too sharp for a raiders hat (well, I went for a LC bash, so I guess it doesn't matter, considering that the LC bow is much more similar to the christy's)

Thats what was throwing me. It was altered from it's original state. I was first thinking the henry but with the dirt taking away the ribbon to clue me in. The the elastic changing the shape on me and the fact that the bow work is going to be slightly different from factory person to person.

I forgot to address this, but yes, this is from the original run. I was one of the first to order the Henry. It's a size 56 and I got it somewhere late October.

$\:D/$ I saw it in the block shape. But in the end it was the bow that was the give away detail. I have an early run as well. As you can see from the pics, the AB Henry is a fine looking Raiders Fedora.

Bullitt, could you elaborate on this elastic band addition? Do you have any pics of what you had done to it? I'm curious to see how you had applied it.

I took some pics for you with the elastic band. The idea is that you only wet the area where you want the effect of the band to show, if that makes any sense. I did not wet the front for instance. After I put the band on, I would really crease the non-bow side and back with my hands from the inside. This comes down to preference, of course. Then let dry overnight.
NOTE: The elastic band will leave a square impression in the felt. That's why I tucked it just under the ribbon. I didn't do that in the photos, for obvious reasons. However, the impression can also be cleared with a hat brush. Again, preference. Hope this helps

Those comments/pics help out a lot. I'm really debating getting a Henry, but having read about the taper issues, it has pushed my away some. Seeing that this may help with getting rid of some the taper, I have more interest in it again. Seeing your hat really makes me think that the Henry can be a really solid Raiders hat. Thanks a lot!

Dude, that Henry looks bloody AWESOME

Great job creasing it! - You know, I wasn't too happy with that block that I was told is a very old HJ block, when I received the very first prototype last year. That was before I started beating the living "you-know-what" out of it. After that, I was like "darn... you know something? - This COULD actually be IT!".

Thanks for having the cochonas to do this to your hat (I don't - I simply don't like beating up a brand new hat). I'm HIGHLY impressed on how it turned out. And who knows... maybe(!!!) this elastic band gives the same effects as "...sat on it... rolled it up...".

Well actually you only wet the area where you're directly gonna place the elastic band, so almost allround, but only a finger wide. Since I don't want the mushroom effect on the front pinch, I leave that dry. Also, I only wanted the reverse taper on the non-bow side and back. To me that seemed to capture the SOC look best.
I've only done this with the Henry, cos it needed it more or less. I have no idea how it will work out with other hats.

I had no clue who made it, but my first thought was this was as screen accurate as I have seen. Then to find out it was what Marc is having made for us was very gratifying. I am impressed Marc. With some tweaking, this hat is a killer hat. We may as well just stop making hats and sell this one. We could include elastic bands with each hat!

Since this factory has made HJs, looks like they were telling you the truth about this block. Don't change it!!

And great work Marc. I wasn't too sure about that block either, until now. I am a convert. Fedora

I have no doubt several vintage blockshape would yield this same result, if worked on by this chap here with the factory AB. But, I know you were joshing me.

What always struck me was that the non-bow side dent is much longer (approximately half the length of the crown) and deeper than it's counterpart.

Steve, I've measured the sides for you and it's 4 7/8". Hope that helps!

Very nice composite, Alex! It's a bit hard to see, but I think you might need a tighter front pinch. Try just wetting your fingers with some cold water and than pinch the top of the front pinch with 3 fingers. Hope that helps.
