Just speculation, but it appears that the effects and stunt riggers were trying to hide a cable that would have been attached to a harness during the sequence where Indy hangs from the tank barrel. From my observation, it doesn't show up anywhere else in the films.
Looking at the pictures I think that the horizontal lines are stretch marks and natural creases, not deliberate markings in the leather. Considering the stress that the leather went through during the filming of that scene the marks don't surprise me.
If we're feeling particularly scrutinizing, though, has anyone looked at the vertical line on the strap as seen in the middle picture? Look to the left side of the strap (Indy's left). The line goes all the way up and down the strap. I would've thought it was another stress mark at first but the line goes all the way up the strap and it looks to be very uniform. You can see the line most clearly inside of the buckle and on the lower portion of the strap. That's not the edge of the strap, it's an inset. And if it isn't deliberate that's one heck of a straight stress mark.

You took the words right outta my mouth.
True the tank was going pretty slow, but I doubt they would have taken chances with a non-reinforced leather strap. So I'd figure that the strap's slightly different appearance was due to it being a specially made one just for that scene.
Holt - I can't believe you are talking about straps when the jacket used in this scene has the collar NOT meeting the storm flap in the middle as seen in most of the other scenes! Kinda like the one in the smithsonian

The point is that I have not seen another SCREEN shot from LC where the collar DOESN'T meet the flap in the middle other than the pics you posted of the tank scene. PERHAPS the jacket worn by Harry in this scene IS the Smithsonian jacket.
PS. the lines on the strap appear to be cracks in the leather due to dryness
yes you are rigth. the tank scene jacket IS the smithsonian jacket with the collar not meeting in the middle of the SF. just like I said above.
hmmm?...no I dont think it is cracked due the dye...
it could also look like it is a steel band twirled around the strap. anyways,.. there is something really weird going on with that strap thats for sure.

or they did tape something to the underside to give it stiffness. look how it arches in the photo and doesn't flop at all. Is he trying to take it off there, slipping his head under the strap?

o.k., this is old news, guys. Yes that is a stunt strap in the tank scene. There is an old thread somewhere with pics clearly showing the cable that is underneath, attached to the underside of the strap. That tape and steel band probably are holding the two together.
