Need help with AB cut...

Post by Harrison_Davies »

Guys n Gals,

Here is a scan of my AB and a pic of it on my head, as you can see it is too wide for my head.

Image

Can someone take the scan and draw a line where I need to cut to bring it to a proper size. I hope this works lol.

I can then print and overlay the cut lines.

I'm too scared to do it alone.

The sizes are:

Sides: 2 6/8"
Front: 2 7/8"
Back: 2 6/8"

Thanks.

You might want to lay your hat down on the table ( look at it from above) and make sure you are measuring it correctly ( the brim). You hat looks like it has a turn to it. Let me ask you a coupe of questions.

What size is your hat?

Since you're in the UK couldn't you ship it over to Marc for the necessary work? Personally, I'd feel a lot better about doing that.

Hi,

Yes the hat is turned. I think I'm a 58"

I'm just wondering if this technique is do-able right now. It may end in my either leaving it or sending to Marc.

But I'd still like to know.

It's do-able alright but Marc could correct that in a minute.

If anyone can help that would be great if not then I may have to consider a reblock, an unturn and a trim from Marc.

i don't think it looks too wide, but I know that's a personal preference. I would be afraid to cut it down myself, since it's such a nice hat.

Nice hat?!?! :notworthy:

Really, I have to agree with toobacat. Too wide in what sense. As an adventure hat I think it looks good as it is! I have had that same response, more than once actually. If I were wearing that as a "dress hat" (i.e., with a sports coat for business) I'd shorten it a bit. For wear with a leather jacket it looks great!!! \:D/ Worst case. Give it a few days to a couple of weeks. Wear it and look in the mirror often.

Yes, it sounds like if you have given it that long, you should send it over to Marc for adjustments. Once things slow down a bit- email Marc and see. :) If it were an Akubra I'd do it myself. A fine hat like that, I'd return to the hands of the master!! :notworthy:

Check this out. I quickly hacked and pasted about 1/2 - 3/4 inch (by eye) to the left side of your original photo. Frankly I'm not sure it looks better.

Partly because the eye is naturally drawn more to the right side of the frame (so it is harder to see things on the left- cognitively inevitable for most of us, I'm afraid). Any chance you could do both sides? Else, you have to kind of cover one side then the other and try to remember it. Frankly, it looks a bit more like a dress hat with the shorter brim. (Again, I think they both look ok.) 8)

Why a reblock and un-turn?

Now you are cookin'!! (It sounded a bit, above, the reblock quote, that you kind of like the CS hat?) A CS deluxe- That's the ticket!! :whip:

(Seriously, don't listen to us too much. The hat looks great. But it is your hat, mon!!) \:D/

I had to trim my Fed and I took a drawing compass set it to 1/4 inch scribed a line all the way around then took a pair of sharp scissors and cut the brim. Sanded the edge and it was all good.

I think it would look OK either way, but I think you are able to wear a wide brim just fine. The longer I wear hats, the wider I like the brims.

This is a dress hat with a 2 7/8" brim and it is one of my favorite hats.
