Many of you have probably seen these pics before, and I'm sorry if this is a repost. This is the LC jacket that was auctioned off June 2005. The larger pics can be found at:
Ouch...that distressing just looks...cartoony. So uniformly SCRAPED along all the seams - more like piping. I'm sure part of that is the flash exaggerating it, but regardless, I'm glad it wasn't so severe looking on film. (I know you can SEE it in the screen caps, guys, I mean it doesn't look THIS clear in every shot.)
(EDIT: Upon rereading my post, let me clarify - I am NOT discounting that it's the real jacket. I even believe it is. I just mean I hate that distressing job...)
this jacket had 'D' rings, and not square sliders on the side straps. Could anyone 'in trhe know' confirm if some jackets did have D rings, or if they all had the square sliders?
I'll say my piece again. I hate the way this distressing looks. I cannot imaging the "rhyme & reason" for distressing all the edges this way.
It looks terrible!
Oddly enough, I do not notice it as much in the actual film..
The LC jackets all had D-rings. I believe it was only the Raiders jacket which had black, rectangular buckles.
Strider,
I don't even think Wested was Wested yet in 1988. Peter and Co. would have been known as Leather Concessionarries and were subcontracted the work from Bermans and Nathans who provided most of the costumes in the films.
Michaelson,
I always thought it WAS cowhide. I have heard all kinds of speculation on what it might have been made of. This may be a question for Peter. I'm no leather expert by any means, but it looks like cowhide to me.

What ever type of leather it is it has a wonderful grain to it. I always found the cotton lining odd. I seem to remember Peter saying that all LC jackets had a satin lining.
All I've EVER read or heard Peter say was all jackets in all 3 movies had cotton linings. He even referred to the lambskin cotton lined jackets as his 'summer weight' jackets in the distant past.
Michaelson wrote:You and me both, my friend. If it IS lambskin, it's about the nicest hide I've ever seen to date. NICE grain to this one.

Hmm...now I'm definitely not letting you try my jacket on. My lamb has a similar grain, but it's not as pronounced in a few areas. Can't get it to photograph right, my jacket still has that shine where it hasn't lost the finish...
EDIT: HEY! This shows something I've been pondering lately...this jacket still has a shine to it where it wasn't distressed so much! (Certianly inside the back bottom and the rim of the collar (the part against the neck), but also on the pocket and next to the storm flap you can see it.) I've hesitated about removing the shine from my jacket as that doesn't seem like how it would normally wear. (I'm still in the natural distressing camp, but possibly only by technicality...I daydream of distressing once in a while. Nobody tell Michaelson, he'd bust me down to Grail Recovery Volunteer! )

Remember that's 'summer weight' in England. We call 70° warm!
It's in the 90's in southern New Mexico. When my goatskin comes I'm going to be staring at it for months (before I even get to really wear it) trying to talk myself out of distressing it.

This is just my two cents worth about the LC auction jacket:
I watched the entire movie carefully, and nowhere could I find Mr. Ford wearing a jacket with that unusually cheesy distressing...EXCEPT...when he is hanging off the big gun on the side of the tank, while the nice man on top of the hill is pouring dirt all over him. If you look closely, you can see what almost look like tan stripes on the seams of Mr. Ford's jacket. There's also a still of that scene on www.theindyexperience.com under the LC Photos page, and his jacket looks very similar to the auctioned jacket. My guess is, he wore it only for this stunt (maybe because it IS cowhide and would stand up better to the abuse).
I do believe his other jacket(s) are lamb, because they moved with him like a lightweight fabric, just like his Raiders jacket...and my Raiders jacket.
It's hard to say. Almost all the jackets were coated with Fullers earth for distressed appearance. This jacket has been cleaned of the dusting, and this odd distressing is what remains, so without the Fuller's to fill in the 'gaps', it's hard to visualize WHERE it fit into the movie.
You can also see the "piping" during the motorcycle chase, and during the scenes when Indy steals the guy's car ... and on the beach before & after Henry Sr. scares all the seagulls.

Citing me as your evidence as such is not going to convince ANYONE.
You're right, Strider, there is definite aging in those scenes, but imo it was a bit more natural than the "cartoon jacket" in the auction.
I don't know the history of this particular jacket, but is it possible that the over-zealous sanding on the seams and edges could have been done after filming? Like maybe whomever was in charge of the jacket knew it would be sold eventually and wanted it to look more aged, but lacked the skill to age it properly.
I still say it only looks weird because as Michaelson alluded to, it was probably cleaned up at some point. And it has been sitting for 17 years. Its dried out. I doubt anyone cared for it during that time. No way is going to look like what was on screen.
I don't know you know I was watching LC the other day and paid a lot of attention to the motorbike scene where they stop, there is a lot of seam distressing on that jacket. A LOT! And couple with filming filters and techniques a lot dissapears, actors often wear orange makeup to appear natural under screen lighting.
