The bargaining begins...
So I have continued talking with my wife, and now she says she wants a $650.00 sewing machine! She doesn't even know how to sew! This woman is driving me nuts. She said she doesn't mind hats, it is just that the Indy hat is so ugly! I think she was just trying to be mean. I am going to continue bargaining, but on the other hand if it gets her off my case, and me the hat, I may just buy her the sewing machine. Illinois

The Bargaining begins
:!: Suggestion! Shop for a used one. You can usually find a digital for a fairly good price! Or even a Standard model, for even less money....
Then you can get your Fedora!!!
When she is satifed, you are satifed...Keep a step ahead!!! Give her saisfaction!! You win! You get your AB...
Have a Great Day!!

Let me understand this...IllinoisJones wrote:So I have continued talking with my wife, and now she says she wants a $650.00 sewing machine! She doesn't even know how to sew! This woman is driving me nuts.
She wants $650.00 for a sewing maching because you want to spend $250.00 for a hat? Hmmm, why the $400.00 difference?.....
Propose to her this one and only solution:
She use $250.00 for whatever she wants and you use $250.00 for whatever you want.
It matters not how ugly she thinks your hat is or that she cannot sew.
Case closed!
Bargaining? And it's...YOUR money? Where does the term 'bargaining' come into play?
Sounds to me as if she wants to do some controlling.
You need to first off, buy your hat. Case closed. Then she can't bytch about it anymore. It's done and over with. Ignore her anger and tell her to go buy the stupid sewing machine if it'll make her feel any better, even though she can't sew. After all, who are you to tell her she doesn't need it, especially if you can afford it.
If she really is just doing this to get under your skin you'll be selling the sewing machine in 6 months for $50 less than you paid and that'll be your money for the Aldens and a Wested. There you go.
STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...jeez.

Hat or no hat?
One thing to always remember in a family(or business) squabble is "It is ALWAYS about the money!!!" Don't be distracted about the sewing machine or any thing else she may or may not be using as leverage.
She thinks that $250.00 is a lot of $$$ for a hat, and she is correct! But, it really is not much money when one considers how little else is available for that sum. A good hat will last a lifetime, what else do you own that will last that long?
jeboat

I type this message whilst wearing my fedora.
Illinois, I am symptathetic to your wife's cause, but in my opinion, marriage is all about compromise.
At the end of the day, you are going to find yourself in a situation whereby you and your partner do not agree on everything, and there are going to be times when your views will clash.
She may just see you spending $250 on a hat as a waste of time. She may see it simply as a whim. I feel that if your money is jointly coming in, then you should both have a say in what that money is spent on. Also, I agree with Agent5 with what he said in the other thread:
Sorry that this does not give you a solution as such. For me, I guess I'm quite biased becasuse I am a female Indiana Jones fan. I have loved Indy quite literally half of my life (I was 16 when the obsession began).agent5 wrote:If the bills are all paid with no reason to think they won't in the future, you're not a druggie, a gambler, addicted to prostitutes or anything of the like...
Hope you can resolve this minus the broken crockery.
You might be interested also in the twin thread then :lol:Canyon wrote:Your wish is my command!erri_wan wrote:Maybe some COW girl (no pun) could post a message in this thread

This is one thing I don't understand: "you get something...then I want something too...". SO you always get something when your wifes buys something for her (clothes, make up, ...)? probably not.
Spending money is no comeptition.
I think in a relationship both should be happy. And if it's a certain hat that makes you happy...go for it. If a sewing machine is what makes your wife happy... get her one (if you can afford that, if not, save money and buy it later).
But to me it sounds like..."oh a sewing machine, I don't have one yet, maybe I never use it but I have one... right time to ask now since he wants this hat".
Don't argue about it, talk about. Tell her that this hat is something that makes you happy, you will wear it often so it's worth the money. Ask her if she really wants this sewing machine and not only to keep you from buying the hat.
when I told my boyfriend that I was going to order my Wested I was a bit afraid that he would react the same way your wife did. But he said if you want it (paid it with my money) get it. He does the same. If he wants something expensive we talk about it and if we can afford it and it is necessary and useful we buy it.
my advice: talk about it. no fight.. an AB is worth a lot but not a fight with the beloved wife...

LOL!!!!! Women! Tell your wife I only spent $120.00 on my sewing machine, and I sew FOR A LIVING. It suits my needs, so there's no reason it wouldn't work for someone that can't even sew. $650.00? You're talking industrial grade, with more features than she'll ever be able to remember, much less use.
But in her defense, I think that's a common female opinion of fedoras. My wife thinks Indy's hat is ugly, too. She calls mine "the bucket".

...And, if it your hard earned money, what do you need her permission for? I don't think that she is your mother, right? Subjugation will kill a marrage just as fast as money will. Put the two together and it's a recipe for disaster. There are the time for compromise, then there are the times when one must stand ones ground and not back down. Don't ever let another human being (male or female) lord over you. Like I said, she not your mother. If it is your money, do with it what you please. If the bills are paid and this is just the mad money, then get your hat man! And if she's asking for a sewing machine at that price tag, then it sounds like y'all have the bills paid and plenty of mad money to play with. But hey, that's just my two cents.
Cheers!
Dan
