Yes, the first pick is before and after. I have taken pictures of pretty much the whole process in this last hat. If you would like, I will post them.
I do the bashing by hand using a little cold water. I also use clothes pins to get the tight pinches. Just make sure you put a few layers, such as a folded washcloth, on before the clothes pins, or else they will leave marks. The marks that the cloth leaves can be brushed out.
