Gear for the "Student" Joneses...
As a Geahead heading back to school (for the first time in ten years!), I was doing a bit of shopping the other day, and found what I think is at least a passable Indy-looking backpack/bookbag at, of all places, Old Navy. The bag comes in Khaki (what I ordered):
Olive:
or what they're calling "Buffalo Herd":
No, they're not period authentic, nor screen accurate, but they look pretty good (surplusish?), and its easy to remove the Old Navy dog tag that comes with it. The metal buckles are chemically etched with a light patina of rust, and the straps over all three main compartments actually close with a hidden press stud (snap). But the kicker for me? The price: these canvas babies are $15.00 US, and for my part, help me carry all the clobber I can't stuff in my Mark VII (@#$% textbooks  ), and still maintain a bit of additional Jones-look to go with the Aldens and what-not.... I may pick up another one, maybe even in "Buffalo Herd"!
Here's the link to the Old Navy webpage featuring the bags: http://www.oldnavy.com/asp/Product.asp? ... pid=246073
I know the Boy Scout backpack from Crusade has been noted before, but, other than the removable dog tag, these make, IMHO, a pretty fine (and affordable, for those living on student loans...) and functional piece for one's ensemble, whether a student or not. Pick it apart if you will, but it works for me! Back-to-school, folks, back-to-school!
Sincere regards,
Henry Jones, Sr.

Very nice! A different thing altogether, but I am in love with these Swiss packs from www.wephaus.com
They are $39.95...

You think they have student loans for Indy Gear?

I'm thinking about heading out to the army surplus store by my house to get a G.I. backpack to use for carrying books just because it would be that much more awesome (and cotton canvas is extremely durable).
I'm getting the pre-college jitters now that a lot of my friends are leaving for school. For some reason the U. of Chicago starts in LATE September and I have soooooooo much time until then.

Look at what some of the online disposals have. You know which one is my fave, so i won't keep plugging it... but they have LOADS of different style packs (shapes, sizes, uses) because they have gear from so many world armies. Don't settle for a bog-standard GI pack... there are far more interesting things out there.jjkillin wrote:I'm thinking about heading out to the army surplus store by my house to get a G.I. backpack to use for carrying books just because it would be that much more awesome (and cotton canvas is extremely durable).

I love the Swiss army surplus bags too. I have a gas mask bag that I picked up in a surplus store over 20+ years ago, and use it as a camera bag for my 35mm. It's been used in helicopter fly overs of Miami when on assignment with the FHP back in the 80's, road trips back and forth across the U.S., and STILL looks like the day I purchased it. They make/made some tough stuff. No WONDER it's surplus. They couldn't wear it out, and just got tired of looking at it! Regards. Michaelson

I just went and got one of those bags, Henry. They're great! (Oh, and I bought some khakis, while I was at it). If you haven't got it yet, you're gonna love it. Goes well with a fedora, too. They've also got these MkVII looking bags... only with webbing straps, which are much longer than a standard MkVII strap. Overall, I'd say Old Navy is a great place to shop... lol
