Re: Inside Penman hat shop

Ooh, the fun part is figuring out which ribbon and which sweatband is mine. :D

Re: Fedora Roots

CM,

That is a spectacular photo of your grandfather. What a wonderful and unique ensemble. I do agree that both of our grandfathers had the same taste in ties. I just noticed that my grandmother's scarf seems to match my grandfather's tie. Maybe just coincedence.

Re: Fedora Roots

Here is an image of my grandfather's father in 1920 in the coal mining town of Dora, Alabama; wearing their Sunday best for a special photo session. My grandfather is the baby in the pic. I don't quite know what's up with the fedora my great grandfather is wearing. It has such a loose pinch and a tw...

Re: Fedora Roots

Wow, that's an equally impressive photo, Bugs. I really love the three piece suit. Very classy. I'd love to know the color of the fedora and suit. But B&W is so timeless. Keep them coming.

Re: Fedora Roots

Awesome contribution, Bugs. How far back does the fedora's origin span? It would be cool to see how early some of the photos are that include our favorite lid.

Re: The Federation IV Display Page

I agree, JLee, but I wasn't sure there was a new type of dark felt as this my first Federation to pick up. I just haven't been able to view the hat in daylight since I come home from work at night time. I didn't want to assume the worst until I started reviewing all the wonderful pics in this thread...

Re: The Federation IV Display Page

I think I just figured it out. They sent me a Carbon Grey version, even though I ordered dark brown and it's on the invoice. I sure hope they'll take it back, since it's not a sizing issue on my part.

Re: The Federation IV Display Page

I recently purchased a regular Federation IV in a dark brown. I really love this hat, but my concern is with the color. It's so dark that I really don't think it's brown until I place it up against a black object. Is this how a Federation starts out and it just naturally weathers to a more brown col...

Re: Fedora Roots

Indiana Bugs,

I concur with your idea. I would hope that everyone will submit a vintage photo of their ancestors wearing a chapeau of some sort. I look forward to all the pics.

Re: Fedora Roots

Another interesting note is the different angle of the hat that can be seen in the storefront window reflection. It gives you another look at the crown.

Fedora Roots

Since I've been doing a lot of genealogy work over the past two years, I've come across a lot of family photos. This one in particular struck my fancy as it's the only time I've seen my grandfather in a fedora. It is early 1948 and he was just released from the Navy in 1946 while serving in the Paci...

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

I haven't contacted Todd directly. I thought I'd post my findings here as a public notice. Again I want to state that I am responsible for inflicting this exposure upon the hat and thus its reaction to the elements. I am not upset because I know that I'm to blame for the act of submitting it to thes...

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

I just wanted to write an update on the condition of my Todd's Raiders. Last week our film crew was shooting in an open field all day. It started out as a sunny day, but by the end of the day a tempest blew through that had us wrapping early for the day. I was wearing the Fedora all day and got comp...

Re: Are fedoras too hot for the summer...?

Living in Louisiana the humidity is a constant ordeal. I have been wearing my Todd's Raiders to set for the past week and have absolutely been drenched in sweat. The hat has been taking a beating but I quite often find myself wiping the sweatband with a bandana. Otherwise I am very happy with wearin...

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

I wouldn't call it a rich brown color. It has a muted tone of brown, which still doesn't detract from the great look of this fedora.

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

So far the only testing I've done is profusely sweating in it to test the durability. I worked out in the yard uprooting a tree one afternoon. I literally drenched the front brim and sweatband once I took it off. Letting it dry overnight I found that the hat's integrity wasn't compromised as far as ...

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

This hat is very flexible for whichever style you'd like to shape it. The hat doesn't have as much chroma in it but suits me just fine. Once you start distressing it it may take on a different hue. I've yet to encounter that as I'm still trying to sweat in it and run it through the ringer so to spea...

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

Thanks for the compliments, gentlemen. Even with the big beard the hat still looks wide brimmed. I was afraid the beard would diminish the looks of the hat but it holds up well.

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

HA! I modestly cropped the photo to try and draw the eye to the obvious focus of the hat. Thanks for the compliment. It's an eclectic collection of movie history, military history, Disneyana, physiology and anatomy, and Star Wars collectibles. Nothing better than the written word.

Re: Pics of Todd's Raider Fedora

Thanks, Michael and Mitch I figured the real experts would chime in on my post in regards to the look of the hat. I can say that I'm happy with something due to personal preference, but it really counts when others tend to agree or disagree. I guess it'll be a continuous search for the perfect Raide...

Re: Todd's Jacket Owner's Thread

I just received my jacket yesterday in a large and the back has the same pebbled look. Todd mentioned to me that I could take some rubbing alcohol and spray it on the panel in the hopes of it flattening out. Does anyone have experience with this method? Just want to ask before I do anything drastic ...
