Re: Probably redundant and superfluous 5 bight TH tutorial

Let me know how it works out. :)

I have seen a lot of tutorials where you wrap the cord around your fingers, and I always get lost at some point and end up with a mess. For me, the method I describe here works much better.

Cheers!

Probably redundant and superfluous 5 bight TH tutorial

I just put together a little PDF about starting a 5 bight Turk's Head, for my own reference, but I thought you might enjoy it as well. Anyway, here it is.

Re: newbie question? how to do a twelve plait?

I highly recommend Ron Edwards' book "How to Make Whips". It tells you pretty much everything you need to know.

Another book which is mentioned a lot is "Whips and Whip Making" by David Morgan, although I haven't read it myself.

You can find either on Amazon.com.

3 part 4 bight Turk's Head Knot Made Easy

Just thought I'd share this. Like many others, I have struggled with the turk's head, even the simple 3 part 4 bight one, having to consult the diagrams in Ron Edwards' book every time, but this video made it sooo much easier for me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwU16WjXLq0 Of course, you need to ...

Re: Experiment (loose paracord whip)

I like the color alot, and yes, you should prolly have used 2more strands ;) How many strands did you use, and what's inside? :D The overlay is a 12 plait (but should probably have been a 14 plait) tapering to a 6 plait. Most of the inside is made up of paracord and electrical tape, as well as some...

Experiment (loose paracord whip)

Just thought I'd share this. Since my other paracord whips have been plaited really tightly, and seemed a bit too stiff to me, I bought 300' of "desert sand" paracord and made this bullwhip with it: http://minstrel.no-ip.info/external/paracord%20bullwhip%203-1_sml.jpg It looks OK in the pi...

Re: Remade my stockwhip

Stiff and tight are good I assume we're still talking about whip thongs here... Yeah, I know that the thong should be tightly plaited, but given that a nylon whip doesn't stretch or "break in" the way a leather whip does, I think I may be stuck with a very rigid thong on my nylon wh...

Remade my stockwhip

I recently decided to remake my stockwhip handle, and used a 10 mm diameter round wooden pole for the handle, and plaited black de-cored paracord on the handle. Here's a picture of how it turned out: http://minstrel.no-ip.info/external/stockwhip_remake.jpg The whole handle is covered in cowtail plai...

I came home early today, so I took the whip out and tried it. I got it to crack loudly, but I think the handle may be a tad too heavy, and my technique is probably lacking with the longer handle because I didn't manage to get the coachman's crack to work. The slow figure eight took a while to get ri...

Here's a picture of my stockwhip. It's a 6 footer, 12 plait overlay with a flat plaited keeper. The fall hitch is the one called "George's Hitch" in Edwards' book. I still need to do the half plaiting on the handle, as well as a turk's head at the butt end. http://minstrel.no-ip.info/exter...

It's cool, Tony. I didn't think of your initial comment any other way. I was merely commenting that I don't have any experience from handling any whips other than the ones I have made myself, so I don't know what a proper stockwhip should feel like. When I start cracking my attempt at making one, I ...

That whip looks much nicer than the one I made.

I don't know what a "real" stockwhip feels like, since I have only ever handled whips I have made myself. Still, I'm looking forward to testing the whip this weekend.

Anybody else made a nylon stockwhip?

I know I said in another post that I would most likely not make another nylon whip, but I missed the punishment of whip plaiting, so I went ahead and bought myself 300' of coyote brown paracord. This weekend I (mostly) finished working on a stockwhip made from that paracord. Not a cow-whip, ...

I actually made a cracker out of a piece of the inner threads from the paracord, and it looks OK, but I haven't tried it on a whip yet. Turk's head knot

Dalexs: I find the diagram showing how to make the turk's head on the handle (for the handle/thong transition) in the chapter on bullwhips to be much easier to follow than the one you show in the post above. It works for the knob as well.

Just my 2 cents.

I didn't let the nylon slide through my fingers, and I don't do that when I plait leather either. But in order to get the plaiting as tight as I possibly could, I had to pull the strands really hard, and inevitably there was some friction between my fingers and the nylon when I did that. However, I ...

My first (and last?) nylon whip

I received 300 feet of black paracord this week, because I was interested in trying to make a nylon bullwhip, mainly to have for when it's wet weather outside so I can go out and practice whip cracking without having to worry about my whip taking damage from the inclement weather. Anyway, armed with...

You can find 1000' spools of paracord for sale on eBay as well. I found 300' spools too, so you don't have to buy it in 100' lengths.

I don't think you can find paracord at a reasonable price in Sweden, unfortunately. The shipping from USA to Sweden is worth it, considering it's a specialty item in Sweden and therefore commands premium prices. Making a nylon whip out of paracord would be a pretty expensive endeavour if you bought ...

Lars, I'm in Linköping, but I have (or used to have, I don't know if they've moved or not) cousins in Örebro.

I believe there are few whip makers in Sweden, if any. Whip cracking doesn't seem to be a big hobby/sport over here either, unfortunately.
