How to disinfect leather

Post by LostRaider25 »

Good day to all!

Recently purchased a hero jacket from wested and it's currently on the way. It's going to travel overseas though and will be handled by a lot of people.
With the covid-19 pandemic, I was thinking if there's a safe way to disinfect the jacket for safety purposes.
Is there any safe tips you could give out? I know alcohol can discolor it as well.

Will appreciate some feedback, stay safe everyone!

Why would you need to disinfect it? It comes wrapped up in sealed packaging. The last people to have touched the leather before you will have been Wested.

The jacket itself will have only been handled by a few people at Wested. It comes packed in a bag. The outside of the shipping package will have been handled by a lot of folks, so just wash your hands well after opening it. Let the jacket sit for a few days if you are concerned.

I’m shipping it overseas and had it sent to another third party shipping service that can deliver it to where I live. Shipping it straight to my place will be much more expensive plus duties. The third party shipping service opens the package and inspects the item. That’s why I’m being extra cautious

I see. in that case once you get the package don't open it for about 4 days then it should be safe.

Hahahaaahaa, wait four days to open. Right, who could wait that long.

I’ve gotten a item from over sea myself (my S&J truck jacket) here’s what I did.
Wearing rubber gloves I washed the outside of the package with a disenfective wipe the kind you use to clean objects. Then when I opened it, I washed that as well.

Then I opened it and let it hang out before I tried it on.
But like everyone said, while it has been handled by several people, these people are tested regularly.

I can appreciate your caution.

DO NOT use alcohol on your jacket! It will most likely strip the color right off it. I wouldn’t apply any chemical cleaning agent.

As others have said, leave it out for a few days to air out. Hanging it outside in direct sunlight will help, germs don’t like fresh air and UV.

Like others said, don't wipe it down with any disinfectant. Just hang it up outside in the sun for an hour and let it air out. Plus the chrome tanned leather being rather fresh and still outgassing many of the tanning chemicals would likely not be very hospitable for a virus to persist on.
