Mk VII Antikmarkt Find

Post by Metallicuda »

Thought I’d share this story here. I’m currently in Germany on vacation and we decided to go to the Antikmarkt in town and take a look around. We walk in and at literally the first booth there’s a bit of green canvas poking out of a crate. I pull it out and to my surprise it’s an original Mk VII gas mask bag. Asked the dealer how much and he says 10 Euro. Told him it was sold! Who would’ve thought I’d find an original in Germany. Just gotta order a leather strap for it and it’ll be good to go! It’s in pretty decent shape. No tears or major damage. One snag in the canvas and it’s a bit dirty but I think that lends to the idea it’s seen many adventures.

Here’s a quick picture I snapped before I get the “worthless without pics”. I’ll snap some more later when I’ve got a little time.

Great find! Now that's some authentic wear for you. I wonder how it ended up in Germany? Perhaps left behind by occupation forces at the end of the war, or pilfered from the field during it? Who knows.
A friend of my late Grandfather's had a lovely camera that he 'liberated' from Berlin in 45. I guess everyone enjoys a good souvenir!
Once again, good find!

Good for you. Finding something like that, to me, makes it all the more valuable verses simply buying one like I did. It's like you found an artifact! :D

Thanks all! Like some have said I think the history makes it more exciting. It really was like finding an artifact. As Elsa would say I was “giddy as a schoolboy” LOL. Who knows what kind of real adventures the bag has seen? Was it collected from the field by a German soldier? Discarded by an English soldier passing through this area? I don’t know, but I know it’s got adventures to come!
