The Mark VII bag is terrific and wonderful and all, but has anyone ever found a way to make those two half-sided compartments useful as compartments? I just spent way too long onna Net looking for pouches that would well fill those spaces... If you can't fish out what you need, fish out the whole pouch, is the basic idea...
And what do you do to make the teeny little compartment with no flap, useful?
My Modified Pringles Can Insulation Container works just fine, but I won't need it often... so what to do with a 9" by 3" by 4 1/2 or 5 1/2" (or whatever it is, I don't have my measurements on me) space that needs to be sectioned off better?
What to do, what to do...

I use one side to carry a camper type medical kit that is filled with things like bandaids, antibiotic, etc. that's in a plastic carry case (you can find them in the camping section at WalMart), and the other a pair of mall binoculars. Neither slide out.

The divider has always annoyed me, so I removed it completely, for maximum carrying capacity.
Re: What to do, what to do...
I use it for a diaper bag and works great to put diapers in a pouch, wipes on the other side of the divider and a sippy cup and snacks in the other compartment.
Get a repo if you're going to hack it up imo
But if you must be careful and I guess get a thread cutter tool (sorry if that's not the right name, I rely on my wife for that:))

Personally I remove the divider using a seam ripper (that's the term you're seeking).
My dad had a similar bag that he used to carry his fishing gear before I was born. That's what they did to make them more serviceable so I don't have a problem with it.
If you're talking about the small inside pocket, I carry a small tape measure in mine. I never use the outside one for anything other than the occasional ticket.

I found an olive drab umbrella that folds down to fit in the Mark 7 bag, at the dollar store. I can provide UPC code etc. if anyone is interested enough to PM me... Here in KY this is gonna come in handy- it already has!

Well, I like the divider, but the repro I use from day to day doesn't have one. I keep a water bottle with me, and having the divider keeps it up right, and allows me easy access to whatever else is in there. The repro always feels like chaos, and I have to look inside, use both hands... I really need a new repro.
For small stuff, I found a little grey zipper pouch with two compartments. I think it was supposed to be for a small camera or the like. I keep that in the biggest compartment, if I need to carry pills, artificial sweetener packets, a spare key... I find repurposing things most useful, especially pouches, cases, and the like.
But I have found every compartment of a MKVII useful in some way, except the little middle top pouch. I just wish the original web straps were longer. The leather ones get quiet uncomfortable after a while.

Re: What to do, what to do...
I'm a fan of Maxpedition pouches.
My bride carries this one to keep her phone and other small items readily available in her purse.

I carry this one with my Boy Scout 'field office' items (notepad, pencil/pens/Sharpie, knife, scissors, tape, etc.)

Either would work well in a MKVII.
Condor brand has similar pouches and tends to be less expensive.
