While I haven't quite pulled the trigger yet on a tweed suit from Magnoli, (which I'm looking to do as soon I sell a valuable drum-set of mine), I have begun collecting some bow ties. Now, the suit I want to order first is the Marshall suit, and I want it to be as SA as possible, and I will order it with the Marshall tie as well, which, as we all know, is NOT a bow tie. But, while the suit in LC and CS he wears while teaching is certainly lighter in color than the Raiders tweed suit, he does wear a bow tie with it, and it pretty much looks like the same red tie with white dots on blue backgrounds in both films.

I doubt its the same exact tie in both films, but you could tell they were going for the same look.

Anyway, the "professor's bow tie" from Magnoli says that it is dark brown with woven pink and green diamonds.



Neither the description nor the pic really look like the bow tie I see in the images above. Also, it looks like the tie is pre-tied, not a "tie-it-yourself" tie. I don't know if Magnoli was trying to emulate the ties we see in LC/CS, but as it's the only bow tie they offer, I sort of figured that he was.

So, as I was unsatisfied with that option, I hunted around on the old 'net and found a tie for $16 that I thought fit the bill pretty well. Mind you, I'm not wearing it with a tweed suit, as I said, and I do plan to order it from Magnoli soon, but I think I've got the red bow tie that I will be wearing with it from time to time already.

That's a nice one though. Did you tie it or is it pre-tied? Looks mighty neat if you tied it.

So, thank you for that, especially out of fairness to Magnoli, since I didn't want to think that he would be that off. But now that I pointed this out, even though I've got one that I think is pretty good . . . Magnoli, if you are reading this, I would love to see what kind of self-tying bow tie you can come up with that would be a match for the tie Indy wears from the pics I posted from LC and CS.

And to answer your question, Hollowpond, I'm glad you like the one I've got, and yes, I tied it myself! You tube is a wonderful thing.

Oh, and take it from one who knows...if you wear a grey coat with that red tie, you WILL be called Pee Wee!

The bowtie and jacket looks great on you Daren! You have such an ease of clothing that typically looks flawless. I'm sure Magnoli will no doubt look into the bow-tie if enough people would buy it. In my own world, I've been lingering on the fence (Well, I'd jump OVER the fence if I had the money or a job) about ordering the Pankot bow-tie ever since finding a dead-ringer Tweed Jacket at a local Goodwill.

As for your bow-tie collection, be sure to check out etsy.com to find some handmade ones!

I'll have to see if I can find pics, but I wore a red bowtie with a grey jacket to our graduation one year and was bombarded with the Pee Wee comments!

This has been on my "to do" list for literally years, but there never seemed to be enough interest. Our Professor's Bowtie is certainly a self-tie and NOT pre-tied.

If there are enough guys interested, we could certainly do a run of Crusade bowties, no problem...

I can attest, too, that this is a free-style bow tie (and being a straight-edge instead of a butterfly bow tie makes it even a bit more challenging to tie). This has quickly become one of my favorite bow ties (second only to my Dead Sea Scrolls bow ties).

This hasn't much to do with the tie, but you mentioned your interest in the marshal suit. I just ordered one about a month and a half ago and wanted the most s.a. color tweed. The picture of the brown tweed on his site of Steerpike was the closest, but the fabric is no longer available. Talk to Magnoli, and he will find the closest thing for you. That is what I did and I'm very pleased with what he picked out. He stated that it was the closest to what is shown in the pics. I haven't received it yet, but I have no doubts.
By the way, you wear the bow tie well. I'm not much for them, but you really pull it off.

Any tips on tying the thing? I have the pankot tie from Magnoli and have the darndest time tying it.....I think I managed it once......I want to wear it once the cooler weather kicks in and I can throw on a good suit...

Do you mean tips for tying a bow tie in general? These are the best instructions I've found (you can print them out and put them in your mirror to consult while tying): http://www.folds.net/bowtie/

I learned from watching youtube. At first, I couldn't find a good video to explain it to me. The first two I came across went way too fast, and the guys didn't explain well. Then I found this other fellow, and I got it pretty easily. Now, tying a bow tie doesn't take me any longer than tying a normal tie.

Don't give up! It took me nearly an hour before I got it down. If you can at least get it tied loosely ( don't worry if it looks messy ), try pulling on the tails of the tie until the bows nearly come loose, then grab the bows and pull them away from each other, tightening the center knot. Repeat this several times to get the bow nice and snug - you may have to turn and tweak the ends around a bit to make them look straight. If the center knot is a bit off, you can hold it with your fingers and pull the short side of the bow out to even it up. Good luck!

The key for me is finding the piece in the back that tightens the knot. I can shape the tie up just like I like it, and then pull that strand and it cinches it into place and neatens the whole thing up. 99% of the ties that I have seen tied incorrectly could be corrected by this.

Thanks for posting the video, the whole bow-tie technique has been a bit of a mystery to me. Particularly liked my wife walking by giving me the "what the heck are you watching now" face.

One thing to keep in mind when tying a bow-tie is that it is the exact same method for tying your shoe laces. If you keep this in mind, it makes things a lot easier!

Daren, I forgot to mention--that tie looks great on you! Not everyone can pull off a bow tie, but you sure can.

There's an old thread over here with some photos of some of the various Indy ties, in which Magnoli describes the LC bow tie as a small blue pattern on a red tie (the blue brings out the blue stripes in the shirt, or vice versa):

There's a good photo of the CS bow tie in Issue #4 Nov./Dec. 2008 of Indiana Jones: The Official Magazine, p. 57. While somewhat similar to the LC, it is more of a darker maroon than the red of the LC tie, and the pattern is not in blue like the LC tie. I'd describe the pattern more as several small dots with occasional fine diamonds, perhaps of a lavender color to match the shirt he's wearing. It's difficult for me to tell.

Here's my closest look to these photos with my 3-piece suit, CS Adventurebilt, a very similar blue striped shirt, and a red with blue pattern bow tie:

Well, my bow tie isn't quite as cleanly knotted or "non-lopsided" as either Indy's, Daren's or Nebraska's, but since getting inspired by this great Thread, I've decided to get to work on actually learning to tie this wonderful Magnoli BowTie that I've owned for a couple of month's now.

Anyway, I'm doing my best to learn how to not only tie it well, but carry off the "look", both with Hat and without...

Looks good Mitch, but if you will find the strand in the back that will tighten that knot up it will look GREAT. Notice how Indy (and Darren's) knots are smaller. If you could cinch that knot up that would be a perfect bowtie knot!

Mags, that's true for all dress attire, correct? The vest bottom button and the jacket bottom button is never buttoned...N'est pas?

Absolument! You got it!

I was certain that was right, but I wanted some backup. My friends and students will button the bottom button on a suit or sport coat and it drives me CRAZY!!!! I try to correct them but, what do you do? Its tough being a civilized man nowadays ...

I VERY rarely correct fellow adults... but I do tell teenagers and younger boys about this point. I figure we can sort out the next generation!

I had known that about the bottom button on jackets, but thanks for the tip for vests, too.

In regards to the bottom waistcoat button being undone, it's only because King Edward VII was so fat he couldn't button it! I usually choose to button it, though. Personal preference.

Daren, the bow tie was from http://www.bowtieclub.com/, but I don't think they carry that particular one anymore. However, there are several other good ones there. In fact, most of my bow ties come from there (excluding the black tie, Dead Sea Scrolls ties, and the Magnoli tie):

As for the dress shirt, I just happened to find it at JCPenney a couple of weeks ago. I brought along that bow tie to look for a pinstriped shirt that would match it, and didn't realize how close it was to the LC dress shirt until I posted earlier in here. It was a brand called "American Living".

Funny thing is that the store clerk saw my bow tie and asked if I knew how to tie it. Apparently, Penney's started carrying free-style bow ties, yet none of them there knew how to tie one. It was quite the image: me in a T-shirt, tying a bow tie around my neck, while I was surrounded by 4 sales clerks, all trying to see how it was done. I should have charged a consulting fee.

I remember when self-tie bow ties rode a wave of resurrgence back in the 70's, and I got pretty good at tying one.

It's been that long since I've tried to tie one. Wonder if I could still do it?

Well, today at my new job we're having a Board of Regents meeting, which is the people that are over the entire State of Texas University system. We were all encouraged to dress up and since I've only worked here for almost a month I decided to do it right.

Brown Fed IV, Dark brown slacks, brown and grey tweed vest, dark brown microsuede sports coat, white shirt, pocket watch and Magnoli's Pankot tie!

I hadn't tied it in a long time but luckily remembered how, I worked on it last night and was not happy with the results but this morning it just clicked.

It's not as perfect as some of the tie's I'm seeing on here but I don't think it's too bad, lol. I'd take a pic but my phone is lost....

I'm having a hard time getting it as tight as I want it, but I guess that just takes more practice.

But this is the most I've ever felt like "Professor" so far....
