Recently stumbled on a DVD of an old Republic serial from the 40's, "King of the Rocket Men", in which the lead character wore a leather jacket with an "action back" and gussets under the sleeves as part of his rocket powered "flying suit". The jacket had knit cuffs to keep the wind from going up his sleeves, and was cut a little longer than a military jacket or even than a TOD jacket.
The same jacket was later used in the Commando Cody serial.

Another possible inspiration for the jacket?

Never seen a 3/4 coat with woolen cuffs.
We should do a photo collection of all the adventurer's jackets in early cinema like Only Angels have Wings and For Whom the Bell tolls.
