Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
So I searched and searched, but I can't find any tutorials on how to paint a resin gun with that nice iron/metal finish. I found a post from from a while back here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34275&hilit=resin but the user that has his painted replica posted with pics hasn't been online in a long time? Can anybody help me out?

Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
Hey Exit
I'm in the middle of building a Blade Runner blaster right now and the techniques will work just the same on a S&W. First you have to wash it in warm soapy water then fill any imperfections in the resin with modeler's putty. Then sand it smooth and then wet sand it with about 1500 grit. Once your done that give it a coat of primer, either black or gray, when that is dry give it a coat of flat black. After the flat black has cured for a day rub it all over with a 6B pencil and rub in the graphite with your fingers so it gets into every crevice. Let it sit for a while then do it all over again until you get the finish you like. As for the grip start with a dark wood color that suits your tastes then give it some lighter wood shades for grain/highlights. Once that has dried rub some dark brown shoe polish into the grooves and wipe off any excess. After all that dries and is to your liking give it an over spray of clear matte and voila a beautiful S&W for your gun belt.
Cheers

Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
Thanks for the info! I hadn't thought of using a pencil, but you're right that will give it somewhat of a metallic finish. I picked up some paints yesterday. I'm thinking on top of the primer, a coat of silver, then a coat of wrought iron (maybe two) then I'll do that pencil trick. I've painted the grips a dark brown, and dry brushed black carefully onto them to give that dirty, handled look to them. Soon enough it will be finished. Thanks againjmacpix wrote:Hey Exit

Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
Be careful with too many layers of paint it will soften the details a lot. To add silver like scratches and wear marks your better off dry brushing them onto the final coat than trying to chip through to the under coats. A 6B pencil is almost dead on to a true gun metal finish. Another way to show silver like wear marks is to use a product called Rub'n Buff that goes on in a paste then buffs to a silver shine just like real wearing. Use it sparingly on the parts of the pistol that would be handled and show those types of wear marks.

Hey Exit
Where did you get the S&W resin, if you don't mind me asking? I've been thinking of getting one and painting it as I'm sure that's only way to get one here in Canada. I just have to finish my Darth Vader repaint first

Hey Indiana Lurch
I got mine from Viking Police & Security Supply at: https://www.vikingpolice.com and they're based in Nova Scotia.
Its this one: https://www.vikingpolice.com/product_in ... yffgfyflgg
Not totally SA as this is the "K" frame model and not the "N" frame as Indy used but close enough for me.
Cheers

Testor's hobby paint makes some great metalizer finishes from their model masters brand of paint. Try the gun metal color.

You could ask Rook how he painted the Webleys that he made

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Rook Webley used a resin that was tinted black before he poured the castings.

Here's what the 6B pencil graphite looks like on a resin replica:

That looks really good, better then mine turned out. Great job on that pistol. I'll have to post some pics of mine soon
Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
I don't see in here or the other very cool post which is the best type of 'top coat' or sealer? I'm talking about the final spray coat to protect the paint job. I've painted my S&W resin model to completion, but I still need to coat it so the paint job doesn't get scratched off taking it in and out of the holster. I definitely don't want it to be shiny.
Any suggestions? This was my first resin gun experience but I'm made many other props.
Thanks,
W.E.

Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
For a final coat that does not have any tacky properties, use Krylon Satin Clear. It is an acrylic clear quickly dries. If there is any area on the gun you feel is too shiny, then just lightly rub it down with a piece of grey scotchbrite (grey is a lighter abrasive than red.) Hope this helps.

Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
I use Krylon Clear Mat and it works a treat. I have never had a problem with any shinny areas.
Re: Help with Painting a resin S&W gun
Thanks guys! I'll give that one a try.

Go to a hobby shop and pick up some Testor's Dullcote in a spray can. It's clear, dull, and it also dries fast.
