Bag, strap and buckle...who's got the most authentic/SA...

Ok, gents, let the games begin! Who sells the most SA bags, straps & buckles, based on your experiences? Please include details about how to fasten/configure the buckle.

Having been on a dig, you get a real appreciation for the reason why the bag, strap and buckle is a part of the IJ costume. It is very practical, functional, and looks alot better being carried around than a backpack or a duffle bag.

What are some practical items/equipment IJ would store in his bag, and what what else would he use it for? Occasionally to store his jacket?

I found it to be very practical with finding pieces of pottery. There is lots you can do with this manly purse...including hanging by it from a tank! Never know when that stap o' leather could save your life? ha!

So who is in the hunt? WPG, Todd's, Magnoli and who else?

It would be nice if we could get some good comparison photos with the bag, strap and buckle with different vendors. Thanks.

I've got 3 unissued MK VII bags (most SA you can usually get), a Todds Raiders strap with AB buckle, and a Wade LC/ToD strap with ToD/LC buckle (with a Wade Raiders Tan strap on the way). They are all great! Took a bag out today with the Todd's strap on a hike, and it held up perfect! And this wasn't a normal hike... it was climbing up rock faces, through the dirt and dust, and no issues at all. Kept my lighter, Todd's knife, WL gloves, water bottle, and camera all safe. Wade definitely takes the cake for the straps and buckles, especially since he's getting in a SA Raiders buckle shortly. All my bags came from a vendor in the UK, and unfortunately he's run dry, or I'd have a few more with different shades and makes. I'll try and post some pics if I can.

I have a Magnoli bag dyed OD, and a strap and buckle from eBay. Works for me. Strap could be a little longer, but it will do for now.

I have a 1941 H & Sons MkVII from Endicotts with a Magnoli strap and an AB buckle. Can't imagine anything better ATM.

I never find too much said about Todd's bag. I assume it's his own sourced bag, not a resell of someone else's.
I have one, the detail is good, it's a very nice reproduction of an original. I have read about them being smaller than an original, but what I have is not.
Does anyone know what the reproduction bags used in KOTC were?

Thanks RC. My intention was to make this a catch all thread, where we could have side by side comparisons of the bags, straps and buckles, then each member could decide what he/she wanted from the photos and info. posted. Post what you have, and I'll try to present them in a workable format.

The photo up on Todd's site looks like his older offering.

It shows smooth snaps and silver-ish strap rings.

Is Wade's bag his own, or a Magnoli bag?

The WPG bag looks to have smooth snaps, silver-sh strap rings, and states it doesn't have all the dividers.

The gold colored snaps on the WPG bag are not smooth. You are correct with the other two points.

I'm pretty sure that Wade's are Magnoli's, but sometimes I think he gets original MK VII's in that he sells too.

It should arrive wednesday. I'll post a review and pix then.

Y'know, it's odd. Ever since Raiders in '81, I've had a predilection for the lowly shoulder bag. I've had a great many over the years---Big and small. I didn't get a Mk VII until last year when it came time to overhaul my gear at long last.

And let me tell you---There's just something about that bag that's just spot-on. The size, the pocket arrangement, just everything---Now I've found that when I wear another bag (which I frequently do when I travel, as part of my job), it's just not right. Thus the Repro Mk VII. I just can't stand it anymore. Totally Jaded now.

I had that same question not too long ago. Apparently, the MK VII was worn around the neck and hung in front of you. The string was tied to one end and went around your back and was attatched to the disk on the other side to prevent the bag from swinging around as you moved about.

Thank Bink! I posted a thread not too long ago asking what the metal disc was for on the side of the bag. Bink answered swiftly. See here to see pics of it worn in front

Are you talking about the string in the little pouch on the inside of the bag?

I think the string in the small pouch is to attach a small can that contained a anti-fog cloth for the gas mask lens. The can had two halves that screwed together. I think photos of it have been posted here before.

the longer string that is in the outside pouch of original bags is used as described previously.

I know that this topic has been 'cussed' and discussed many times in the past, but what is your take on the leather strap as to grooves or no grooves on the sides of the strap? In Raiders, referring to the Belloq and Indy scene outside the temple with the Hovitos, the camera does somewhat of a close-up, as Indy hands the idol to Belloq. There does not appear to be grooves on the sides of the strap. If you have a favorite scene in which the grooves are more pronounced, could you please post it?

It might just be focus but the grooves aren't too pronounced in that photo.

Is that a number written on the strap just below the collar?

Well... Wade's new Raiders strap came today, and its pretty awesome. As promised, here are some pics of the straps I have (2 Wade, 1 Todd) and 2 of my 3 MK VII Originals. The buckles on the Todds and Wades Raider are both AB buckles. The other is Wades LC/KOTCS roller buckle. (Sorry for the delay, was REALLY busy after work, and had to take these pics late in my room)

Straps Without Flash:

Bags: (one is lighter then the other)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/352 ... 79.jpg?v=0

Wade's Raiders strap is crazy (in a good way), with the faint grooving here and there, plus the dark spots of colour in places on the strap (can't see them in the pics or other pics I tried to take). It looks the part to me, although the strap does look a little wrinkled but it just needs to be broken in I think. (Not sure if the Raiders strap was super smooth, or if it did have winkles in it like old leather.)
The Todds strap I have is one of the "2nds" from the clearance. Nothing wrong with this strap except at the buckle attachment area its scraped and the strap is uneven, but you can't see it at all, so it doesn't matter. This strap has been faithful to me on a few adventures so far (hikes mostly) and holds up very nicely. If your looking for a cheap, great looking strap go for the 2nds at Todds, no issues there.
Wade's other strap, the darker one is a very nice KOTCS/LC without the aging yet. I rubbed lots of water to get off an excess dye, and it brought up some lighter areas nicely, and a few wrinkles here and there. Again, built strong, and looks great!
These pics don't really do Wade's straps justice. You have to see them to appreciate them. He does excellent work, and they are very SA IMO. A no brainer to me if you want the best straps out there plus with his new Raiders slider, you can't go wrong, its an easy decision. Very nice work Wade.
If anyone would like some more/better pics please let me know, and I'll do my best.

Thanks Texan. Both bags are orignal 1942 MK VII's. I actually got them from a World War II vendor in the UK. I ordered all 3 of mine from him. Unfortunatly he is out, and has no more :( or I would order some more. The only problem with them is they STINK like an old cottage  Its a pain getting the smell out. They've always been in top notch condition, with only one bag having some slight rust on the snaps (came out with CLR) and another had some dirt or rust on the disk (again came out with CLR). If you want his site I can PM you it.

that would be nice. Have you tried baking soda? Maybe if you put them in an enclosed space with no ventilation for awhile with the soda? no doubt the humidity in GB had a lasting effect.

Nice bag straps and bags Exit, I definately am now convinced that Wade does the probably most SA strap I have ever seen. That distressed one looks absolutely amazing. As far as getting that nasty smell out of the MK VII's, you can try a variety of ways, a lot of people say washing the bag works great, I used febreeze on mine and left it outside for a while, like days on end. Put it out in the sun. I think washing it is probably what I should have done. Nice bags and straps again, thanks for sharing.
