Big head and the Raiders pinch conundrum

Post by PsychicsAndSwords »

Okay, so as long as I've been collecting Indy gear I've been trying to find a hat with the tight Raiders pinch/deep dents. I haven't bought a hat in a few years, but I've had two in the past: a Peters Bros, pre-pinched by them, and an Akubra Federation, which I shaped myself. Now, the thing is, of all the Indy hats, I'm very, VERY taken with the Raiders look, particularly early on and in the streets of Cairo scenes, where the pinch is very tight and deep. The problem, though, is that I have a big head, and no matter how close to the 'look' the hats have been (Peters Bros fairly close, and I managed to get the Akubra VERY close), the pinch/dents always push out to more of the Temple 'tear drop' style when I actually put it on. So my question is, is there a hat out there which will retain the tight/deep Raiders look even when on a big giant head like mine? Does anyone else have experience with this sort of problem?

I have had similar experience with most modern hats--they just don't have enough crown material rising high above my noggin to maintain the pinch. I have one vintage borsalino, circa 1950s, that has a very high crown that would be capable of the Raiders tight pinch, but I've left it similar to how I found it, a bit more relaxed. I'm hoping my Adventurebilt (which I expect will arrive within the next two months) will retain the Raiders pinch.

XPLSV,

I have a Fed III Regular and I tried to put a Raider's pinch in there.
But it didn't stay and I think that it is because I wear a size 61.

My head looks like a bowling ball on a lollipop stick. You might
just want to do a Crystal Skull Bash or LC.

I'd love to hear about the Adventurebilt. Those are some mighty fine looking hats, but I couldn't put up that much money and wait time if I would just end up with the same problem. Hmm... :-k

If your head is pushing out the dents, then you just don't have a head that a Raiders pinch will work on. The Fed has very little taper, so your forehead must be rather prominent. Unless I'm misunderstanding your dilemma.

agreed. you'd need a 360 block or at least one that is 90 degrees to the brim at the front.......3thou can hook you up with that.

you may also be tring to dent the hat too deep........the raiders hat's side dents were deepest at the top of the crown.......i've seen some hats where it looks like they are trying to do that all the way down to the ribbon. imo, the side dents are a function of the top camel hump dents....they do not stand independently.

Thanks for the referal, Indiana G! :) PsychicsAndSwords, I have a 61 Fed 4 New In Box. If you are a 60 or 59, I can probably make you a hat you like. PM me. ....... Funny you say it's a big head conundrum. I'm a 7 1/8, and I'm not happy without a 360 stovepipe. 8)

Cosmetic surgery can sand down your skull and put the raiders dents in your head so they won't push them out of your hat.
Theoretically anyway.

All you'd need is a lobatomy and that plan works! You don't need all your brain, do you?

if you go that far, make sure to put a center crease in your skull........it'll work nicely with my block ;)

Be careful with that. You could end up looking like a Klingon!
