Yet another round of Guess The Hat!

Post by havershaw »

I picked up a new hat a few months ago and haven't had a chance to show it off yet.

What do you guys think it is?

You can also see more pics of it in the following thread because I wore it in those photos too - just scroll down to the end of page 2 (I wore a different one in the earlier photos): viewtopic.php?f=2&t=35194&start=50

I'm guessing it's an AB Henry, or DP fur felt, 'cuz it doesn't look like it has a dimensional brim, IMO.....................

:-k
I'm guessing it's a Magnoli Herbert Johnson.
If it's NOT, allow me to say: whatever it is... I'm liking it a LOT.
Also, quick question, havershaw:
Whatever it is, what size is that hat?

I'll guess Henry, seems to be somewhat darker felt, extra boxy from front view, rather tapered look from side view, felt looks to be good quality, generous flange in the back.

I could you even put DP in the same sentence as any AB.

Thanks for the kind words.

As for size, Mitch, I'm guessing it's a 7. It's not marked but that's what I wear and it fits me fine.

I acquired it second-hand and the seller did not know his hat size either.

it's not a dp.

Going off what I see in the ribbon, that hat is either an AB, AB Deluxe, or a Penman.

After looking at the hat some more, I'd say that its blocked on Steve or Marc's Crystal Skull block. The dimensions are just right for a CS hat. I think the hat was just turned and creased like a Raiders hat.

I'm going to say it's an Akubra Federation. I can't put my finger on which version, especially since ribbons and block shapes can be changed. But I'm betting it's a Fed.

Naw, it's too nice of a brown color to be a Fed. My guess is that it's a Mag. Whatever it is, it sure is nice =P~

i would kill for hatsdirect to sew a ribbon like that....that's why i don't think she's an akubra. the bow does look like steve's work and the felt looks like rabbit. i'll cast another vote for the IMHJ :D

I'm terrible at this but here goes:
The stitching around the ribbon is different from what I've seen before, so I'm going to guess that you made it yourself.

whoa........good eye on the new stitches. i dismissed them as 'distressing'.....okay, i'll change my guess to a re-ribboned fed 4......the ribbon looks like it came from an AB though.....

Well, some of you were right.

It is indeed a Magnoli HJ.

I bought it second-hand from another forum member.

Do any of you guys think the brim is too small? The fellow I bought it from said he simply asked for a SOC and this is what he got, and that he made no changes to it nor requested any changes. But I've measured it and the brim is definitely about 1/8" shorter than my Christy's. I also don't think the brim distortions you're supposed to get from the turn show up as much as a result.

Could this be because it's a smaller size, and Fedora thought it would look better shorter on a shorter hat?

I was kind of a bit disappointed when I got it because I immediately recognized the brim as being smaller...but I do have a small, narrow face. I think it actually looks pretty good on me. (And I could not beat the price, so there's no complaining there.)

The brim kind of swoops down a bit low in the front for my tastes as well. I keep meaning to steam it and get it a tiny bit straighter but I haven't had a chance.

Does anyone else here know if the ribbon on these is just the HJ ribbon or do they replace it with AB ribbon? Since I see holes where HJ and Christy's usually tack their ribbon, I'm guessing it's HJ's.

Mitch, your Mag HJ is also quite awesome. It also screams to me how short my brim is...

...but like I say, I think it looks appropriate on me. I think.

hmm...I think the brim is slightly small for a Raiders hat on you, but as just a normal hat, it looks great! Very nice hat, friend. -M

Shows how good I am. I used to own a Mag HJ! ](*,)

The brim looks fine to me, especially for your face. Most people don't realize that the true dimensions of the Raiders hat are in all ways smaller than one would expect.

Your problems with the turn probably have more to do with the shape of your head. For some people, the turn won't work that well. ANd for some, only a stiffer or a floppier hat will work with the turn.

In any event, it looks fine. I wouldn't monkey with it. For what it's worth, the standard Christy's brim width is too wide for an accurate Raiders.

Thanks for the kind words. I do like the hat, don't get me wrong. And for what I paid for it, I certainly can't complain.
The turn works OK on me - though I do help a little by putting a few pieces of foam in the front and back of the crown, to sort of make my head seem more long oval (or force the hat into being more of an oval). I notice when I stretch the crown front to back, thereby pulling in the sides a bit, I get all the brim distortion and reverse taper anyone could want. guess my head is just not long oval enough, or maybe I need more turn.

This hat still looks more Raiders to me than any of my other hats. I haven't worn the Christy's since I got this a few months ago and I took it out last night to wear - it's not looking so hot to me now. The brim does seem a little big to me, though when I look at pics of me wearing it, it seems fine. It measures maybe 1/8" more than what a Raiders hat should.

Anyway, measurements on the HJ:
Brim is 2 5/8" in front and back, 2 3/8" on the sides. Measured from the bottom of the ribbon to brim's edge.

I did ask the fellow I bought it from whether he had requested a smaller brim or any alterations to it, and he said there were none. Strange.

The crown is about 4 3/4" in front and about 3 7/8" in back. It's about 5" at the highest point on the side. (I've always had trouble measuring crowns, so if this sounds wrong or weird to anyone, I'm not surprised. The roundness of a crown makes it hard for me to judge where exactly the top of it is...) Open crown seems a bit over 5".

Size is not marked and the seller said he did not know his hat size. Mine is a straight-up 7, and this hat fits me beautifully, exactly how my Akubra Fed Deluxe fits me, which is a size 56, as well as my many other vintage hats which are a size 7 (excepting those which had suffered obvious shrinkage or stretching, which are far and few between).

So: I'm betting it's a 7. no way it's smaller than that. I can get into a 6 7/8, but it leaves a mark on my forehead.

And the HJ stitching is deliberately replicated.
Anyway, measurements on the HJ:
Brim is 2 5/8" in front and back, 2 3/8" on the sides.
That is a little short. Could have been an error in the fulfillment of the order that the previous owner just never realized. Crown sounds right, though

I think it suits me pretty well, too - and the fact that it's not entirely perfect...well, I guess it gives me a reason to buy another hat...

Yeah, I think that's my wife's point...

"...after all these years, you need ANOTHER brown hat?"

She has more patience for the vintage hats...they at least all look sort of different. For the Indy hats...not so much.

I was going to guess Magnoli HJ but it's been determined already. It looks great on you, even if the brims shorter than expected.

off topic but that's your Todd's jacket right?

Yeah, gauging by how many folks guessed it to be a Mag HJ, it was pretty obvious (or there's just lots and lots of astute COW members here).

Yep, that's my Todd's. It's due for another hot water treatment, mainly to the body of the jacket. The sleeves are fine and I don't really want them to get any smaller or more wrinkled than they are. Parts of the body started to look too new again after about two months.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I think it looks fine on me as well. My only concern is that a smaller brim makes the crown look too big.

And as I said, the price could not be beat, so it's definitely a keeper.

Well, it's not really that hard...the "original" ribbon is very distinctive. If you've been spending lots of time looking at Indy hats, you'll recognize it very easily. That narrows it down to the Mag HJ, AB, ABDLX and Penman. Mind you, I didn't know you had a Mag there - I suspected it a bit, but I didn't know. However, I was fairly certain that you had a hat from one of those four makers. -M

Is this a common occurrence with this hat? I noticed two little stitch holes in the back of my Mag/HJ/AB as well.
