It looks fantastic, G. Are you using a western felt, because it looks very thick.

thanks michaelson....that's a great compliment from you :D

LLS, i'm planning to take her on our mexican vacation.....i can get some pics of her in action as i'm hoping to visit some mayan ruins. the iron in the background came from my brother and laws, dad's dry cleaning business ages ago. my sister and law was using as a moth balled display piece when i found her. it's still officially on loan but i don't think she wants it back anytime soon. it's an industrial iron so that thing heats up in a serious way......and it works as good as the day she was put together. thanks to the blood sucking civil law suit lawyers, they don't make them like that anymore

chewie, i always use western hat bodies as i like the amount of brim that you get from them. i've tried stretching dress hat bodies using a wet blocking technique but i've never had satisfactory results with it. some batches of western felt that i get are light in the stiffener so it handles almost like a dress body......not this one....i'd probably be more secure playing hockey with this fed than my actual helmet  this will take a while to soften up but i like the way she looks on my noggin..........

.......now the hard part about it is...........finding the right jacket!

Well, don't wander into the jacket section and ask for an opinion. You'll NEVER find your way out!!!  ;)

Well done. I'd be proud to have a hat like THAT in my collection... so I'm glad it's part of YOURS.
And that's a GORGEOUS grey, by the way!
:D
All the Best,
Fox

G,

What can I say but...WOW! That looks fantastic! "Your skills are complete" Each one gets better and better. I am glad the block is working...and the new one is in the beginning phases of construction....so not to far off in the near future....you should have it to try out.

Nice stitching pics......now you have me a little scared....but still up for the challenge.

Looks great...cant wait to see the Mexico pics.....you should schedule a 2 day layover in Detroit and I could pic you up and we could make some hats at my place....sure your wife wouldn't mind....and bright side....your daughter could play with mine :D :D :D

Nice ribbon, and it looks brand spanking new, like a real dress fedora.

Good job, G. I really like the front view of that hat as well as the crease you put into it. It looks great.

I to love the color, is this the same granite grey that Fedora and Penman use?

Great Hat!

Does any of the present vendors use this thick/stiff/western felt?

I would be surprised if no vendor has jumped on this for those that like the feel of a western hat.

Which western model Akubra did you start with?

Not sure but I think he made this from a western felt hatbody. The fed is short for fedora not Federation. But I may be wrong.

Yeah, you just beat me to that line, Marty.
:)
I'm no expert, but as I understand it, Indy G built this hat (from "scratch", so to speak) using a thick Western "rawbody" and his own block to build it upon... but like the librarian said, "fed" is short for fedora... not Federation.
I don't believe Indy G simply reblocked a Fed IV on his own block... But Indy, please correct me (Marty & I) if we've got this wrong.
I've never been an expert on this subject, but I may have accidentally picked up a few things from reading all these Hat Posts... now, I'll go back to being a guy who just grunts happily when he sees such a beautiful hat!
;)

Yeah, Mitch. It's terrible what happens when you are on here long enough. Ignorance is bliss but what's I've picked up here by osmosis has made hat selection less of a hit or miss proposition.
